Message CIP Paths for Logix Controllers

Document ID BF5708

Published Date 03/21/2025

Summary
Message CIP Paths for Logix Controllers

Problem
How to configure message instruction Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) paths and
pathing for ControlLogix (1756) and CompactLogix (1769, 5069) controllers and associated
communication modules.

Environment
• Studio 5000 Logix Designer
• RSLogix 5000
• ControlLogix Controllers
• CompactLogix Controllers

Solution
When building your message path, use the following as a guideline to simplify your task:

All paths are of the following form x and y:

• Where x is the media type you want to transmit on. (This could be the backplane,
Ethernet, ControlNet, serial, or Data Highway Plus.)
• Where y is the node or address on that particular media. (This could be a slot
number, IP address, ControlNet node address, serial address, or Data Highway Plus
node address.) ACEPTAR

Let’s start at a 1756-L6x or 1756-L7x processor sitting in a ControlLogix chassis: path = 1, 5,
2, 100.100.100.100, 1, 0, 2, 24, 1, 10. (Each x and y pair has a different color for reference.)

Note: The first 2 numbers of the path above can be substituted with the name on the
communication module. For example, the "1, 5" at the beginning of the path references
routing to the backplane and then to slot 5. If the name of the Ethernet module in slot 5 is
ENET_MOD, then you could start out by typing ENET_MOD in the path.

Here are what modules this path travels through:

Paths Modules
1756-Lxx in slot 0 to the backplane to slot number 5
1, 5 (or name of module in slot 5)
(which has an Ethernet module there)

out onto Ethernet to IP address 100.100.100.100 (which

2, 100.100.100.100
in this case was another 1756-ENxT module)

to the backplane to slot number 0 (which has a 1756-

1, 0
CNB module there)

out onto ControlNet to ControlNet node number 24

2, 24
(another CNB card in this example)

to the backplane to slot number 10 (which has a 1756-

L6x or 1756-L7x controller)
If controller is a PLC 5, SLC, MicroLogix, or Micro 800,
1, 10
there is no designation for the backplane and slot
number
This is not necessary.

Other configuration numbers for the media type

Now that the path format of x and y is understood, the following lists some possible
numbers for x:

. The backplane

◦ DH-485 - out channel A
◦ DHRIO - out channel A
◦ DNB - out onto DeviceNet

◦ DH-485 - out channel B

◦ DHRIO - out channel B
The following lists some possible numbers for y: Media you are on - Value for y

• ControlNet - ControlNet Node Address (0-99)

• Ethernet - Ethernet IP address (a.b.c.d)
• RS-232 Serial port - DF1 node address (0-255, use 1 for a point-to-point connection)
• The backplane - Backplane slot number (0-16, depending on chassis size)
• Data Highway Plus - Decimal equivalent of the Octal Data Highway Plus node address
or (8#10) means that the number 10 is in octal. (0-63 decimal or 8#00 to 8#77)
**Important Note: For a messages going out of the controller’s Ethernet port, the path
does NOT have 1,0, at the beginning for the following processors:

• 1756-L8x
• 1769-L1y
• 1769-L2y
• 1769-L3y
• 5069-Lx*
Instead, the path starts with a 2, which indicates the path is going directly out of the
Ethernet port of the controller.

*If configured for Dual-IP then the path starts with 3 if going out port A1 and a 4 if going
out of port A2

Alternative Method (The Cheat Sheet)

Note: RSLogix 5000 -> I/O Configuration is typically used only to configure I/O Modules
and/or Produced/Consumed tags.

. You can temporarily add Communication Modules and Processors to assist with
setting up message paths.
. Once the appropriate modules are added, you can then Browse the Communication
Path in the MSG Setup.
