DEM 703 SYSTEMS ANALYSIS IN EDUCATION

Concept Paper

Instructions

1. Provide the following essential information, bases, or data that can be used in the formulation of the Concept Paper:
1.1 Systems Analysis Interest. List down some general areas in your education institution that are feasible for systems
analysis. Examples include Educational Planning; Curriculum Development; Teacher Education; School Improvement;
Resource Allocation; and Policy Development.
1.2 Specific Topic. From the general areas listed above, what specific topics in the area of specialization are highly
relevant and contributory to the discipline (PhDEM)? List some specific topics (at least 3) that are applicable in the
context and the profession.
1.3 Study Review. Cite some studies (5 foreign studies & 5 local studies) relevant to the chosen topic for system analysis.
Use the matrix below.

1.4 Research and Knowledge Gaps. Based on the study review, formulate the research and knowledge gaps.
1.5 Theoretical Basis. Discuss the theoretical foundation of the topic and objectives using the Systems Analysis Models or
Frameworks. Introduce the proponent/s, define, and discuss the chosen model or framework.
1.6 Significance. Discuss the future primary beneficiaries and readers of the concept paper.
1.7 Research Methodology and Design. Choose a research method appropriate for the context of the study.
1.8 Target Population, Sources of Data, and Instrumentation. Specify the subject’s population and sources of data.

2. The student should write a concept paper that presents and discusses the contextualization, rationalization, and
conceptualization of the systems analysis interests, topic, research and knowledge gaps, objectives, theoretical basis,
significance, methodology, and resources that would lead to the writing of the Concept Paper.

2.1 Concept Paper

Parts:
a. Study Context. Compose an introduction to the concept paper. Use the macro-micro discussion of the topic. Rationalize
and justify the knowledge and research gaps based on the study review. (2-4 pages)
b. Theoretical Background. Introduce the proponent/s, define and discuss the assumptions, and justification of the
utilization of the assigned model or framework.
c. Research Objective and Questions. Formulate the general objective and specific research questions of the analysis.
d. Literature and Study Review. Arrange thematically the literature and studies based on their relevance to the chosen
area of the systems for analysis.
e. Synthesis. Using the comparison and contrast of the study review, establish the knowledge and research gaps. This
should define the novelty or originality of the concept.

f. Methodology. Introduce, discuss, and define the chosen method/s, technique/s, and approach/es to clearly show the
direction of the research design. If the method is quantitative, specify the target population, sources of data (for
qualitative), and instrumentation.
g. References. Use APA 7th Edition.
2.2 Video Presentation
a. In a video presentation, discuss the assigned/chosen systems analysis model/framework. This may include the definition,
assumptions, paradigm, and application and importance in education system.
b. For sample context, discuss the salient features of the concept paper focusing on the Overview, Gap, Theoretical
Background, Research Objective, and Methodology.
c. Presentation should be done in 30-40 minutes.
d. The end of presentation signals the start of the Q&A Phase.
