1. The process of Charlie learning how to make rolls
Frank was the person who had the idea.
The idea appeals to Gimpy. Gimpy decided to teach Charlie how to make rolls.
When Charlie heard the idea, he kept his head down, staring at his shoe laces.
Did Charlie agree immediately?
No. He wants to please Gimpy. He felt cornered. 被逼到死角，感觉很无助。
Why so?
Because the words “teach and learn” reminded him of sth unpleasant. Because he was severely punished
when he was a kid. (a thin white hand hitting him to learn something)
So the first reaction is refusing to learn.
(When Charlie backed away) Gimpy came up with an idea.
Gimpy offered to give Charlie a pendant. (a brass chain with a shiny brass disc) Gimpy said “I got a
new shiny good-luck piece for you to play with.” It is attractive to him. Charlie agreed.
People were talking about a bet.
How did they start? What did Gimpy do?
1) Gimpy did it first as a sample. Charlie observed very carefully. He let Charlie follow his way.
Charlie was watching Gimpy intently. (watch each movement)
Frank also performed. That confuses Charlie.
Charlie shakes his head.
2) This time Gimpy do it slowly. (When you slow down, you repeat and they can follow. ) Gimpy
asked Charlie to do each part along with him.
This time Charlie made it. Charlie could follow Gimpy’s every move. (A voice echo in his mind:
Do it right and they will like you). He made a ball.
Charlie got a praise. He made six rolls in a row.
3) He was asked to do from the very beginning on his own.
Did he succeed?
No. He cannot bring himself to the start. Because he knows he will fail, and he is afraid. Panic
came over home.
As Frank said, his memory didn’t stick. Charlie learned it but he forgot soon. He couldn’t hold onto
what he’s learned.

Review:
1. first of all, Charlie was eager to please sb. He is nervous. He tends to do things wrong. This mindset
is not good for him to do things well.
2. Charlie was very afraid of failure. Teaching and learning remind him of sth unpleasant. He was very
nervous and distracted. If we are nervous and distracted, do you think we can do things well? No, we
cannot bring out the best of us.
2. The arguing between Prof. Nemur and Dr. Strauss
When Charlie dropped by their office, he heard them arguing with each other. Charlie thought he shouldn’t
have stayed, 这个时候 Charlie 的智商上来了，他觉得 overhearing 都不合适了。but it’s very hard to break the habit of
listening.
They mention a meeting in Chicago.
Who decided to go to the meeting to get it publicized? Prof. Nemur. Who will know it? Scientists

Whose method and techniques? Dr. Strauss’s. He is a neurosurgeon. He uses his method and techniques
to contribute to this experiment. He says the project has a lot to do with his methods
What does Prof. Nemur think about that? Did he think they are important?
His original theory is important.

3. Your impression on Rose.
Rose argued with the school principle about his future. Rose insisted Charlie should be remained in the
original school. She insisted that Charlie be normal. Charlie go to college. Charlie be somebody. 出人头地
（虚拟语气） The principle insisted Charlie go to the special school called Warren State Home and Training
School. At that time, Charlie was 6 years old.
When Charlie wanted to use the toilet, he wanted his mother to help him. But Rose wanted him to use
the toilet alone. She refused to help. “You are a big boy now. You can go by yourself”. Charlie made it
in his pants and he got spanked.
When Charlie was playing with the spinner, Rose knocked the spinner down and the spinner was
destroyed. For Charlie, the spinner can let him control himself. Go play with your alphabet blocks.
The relationship between Rose and Matt:
Rose is like a big, white bird who is always fluttering around her husband. Her husband is too heavy and

What is absent in this mother- son relationship? Only a mother’s ambition is there. Love is not
there. Respect is not there.
His father said: It’s not fair for Charlie if we pretend he’s normal.
Driving him as if he were an animal who do tricks.
Q2: Why did Charlie feel upset after overhearing professor Nemur and Dr. Strauss
arguing about him?
He thought the arguing was caused by him. He felt frightened. (Part of the reason)
Dr. Strauss and prof. Nemur were Charlie’s Gods. Now he realized they were two normal
people. Their previous images as gods collapse. When the image of your role model collapsed.
从神坛上下来了。
The people who developed this surgery aren’t gods—they’re petty, small-minded men, hunting
for prestige and recognition from their peers.
He feels even Dr. Strauss and Prof. Nemur had something to worry about. He feels empathy for
them. 情商到不了这个程度。
Q4 ： Do you agree with the school principal’s decision to send Charlie to a special
school?
In the principle’s office, there was an assistant. When Charlie’s mother was crying, the
assistant was smiling. 偷着笑。
自卑的人(People with low self-esteem)，想要 please other people, 是弱势群体。People tend to blame them.
If Charlie is with normal people, the bully will never stop.
