Beautiful Hope – Chapter Summaries

Chapter 1: Childhood
- Dukuza has an experience which affects him. Later forgets it.
- Dukuza realises everyone is leaving the village for work, he isn’t
convinced their reasons are good, loves the simplicity of his village.
- Dukuza is somewhat religious, prays to and believes in God.
- Michel Renaud (Priest), realising there is more to life than seclusion and
church. Maureen has a hand in it, seems they fancy each other.
- Setting: Limpopo, Letsitele (farming district)
- Michel wishes to marry Maureen but is insecure on his financial standing
feels he has nothing to offer her, likes her so much that he is starting to
regret his profession.
- Michel’s family doesn’t agree with his profession, ran away because
person he loved got married. His brother wants him to come back.
Michel does not know whether he should stay or go back (internal
conflict-person vs self)
- Dukuza’s family did not care for his love for poetry and were expecting
him to soon provide/make money for the family.
- Dukuza explained his situation to the priest. The priest goes to the
Whitaker farm to see if he can get a job for Dukuza, Mr Whitaker didn’t
agree at first but Maureen convinced him.

Chapter 2: Modjadji
- Story: Dzugudini and followers left her hometown to escape her father’s
anger for having and intimate relationship with her own brother. Not
only did she leave but she stole his magic medicines and a few of his
followers. They wandered for many months and eventually settled South
of Limpopo where they built a new kingdom and thrived. Two centuries
later Mugado rose to the throne. He was an unstable King who killed his
sons and married his daughter Modjadji, who eventually ruled using
power, fear and respect. She was a mysterious ruler so stories were
made up about her.
- This story is an introduction to new character Nomona
- Nomona is part of the Lobedu tribe, she was so beautiful she turned the
head of every male
- Nomona falls asleep and is woken up by rain and lightning
- Nomona does domestic work for a white widow nearby, money she
makes from her work she hides under her floorboards
- No electricity in the house (poverty spec)
- Nomona has dreams, wants to finish school more life than to work.
- Nomona wanted friendship with the widow but she was deep within her
mourning
- Nomona has a moment with the widow which pivots their relationship.
- Nomona and the widow grew closer to each other since the widow
opened up about her own past and her late husband
- Nomona however has to say goodbye as she needed to go back to
school
