Abstract
This paper provides a comprehensive survey of machine learning techniques applied to
image classification, focusing on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), transfer learning,
and emerging methods like vision transformers. We analyze their performance, limitations,
and applications across domains such as medical imaging and autonomous driving.

1 Introduction
Image classification is a cornerstone of computer vision, enabling machines to identify objects
within images. Applications range from medical diagnostics to self-driving cars. This paper
reviews state-of-the-art machine learning approaches, emphasizing recent advancements.

2 Convolutional Neural Networks

CNNs are the backbone of modern image classification. They use convolutional layers to ex-
tract features, followed by pooling and fully connected layers. Notable models include ResNet
[? ] and VGG [? ].

3 Transfer Learning
Transfer learning leverages pre-trained models to improve performance on smaller datasets. It
is widely used in domains with limited labeled data, such as medical imaging.

4 Vision Transformers
Vision transformers (ViTs) have emerged as a powerful alternative to CNNs, using self-attention
mechanisms to process image patches. They excel in large-scale datasets but require significant
computational resources [? ].

5 Applications
• Medical Imaging: Tumor detection in MRI scans.

• Autonomous Driving: Object detection for navigation.

• Agriculture: Crop disease identification.

6 Challenges and Future Directions

Challenges include computational cost, data bias, and interpretability. Future research may
focus on lightweight models and ethical AI frameworks.

7 Conclusion
Machine learning for image classification has seen rapid advancements, with CNNs, transfer
learning, and ViTs leading the field. Continued innovation is needed to address scalability and
ethical concerns.
