Class: IV Subject: Science
Lesson 9: Light
I. Concept maps:
Light
Classification based on Properties of light
the amount of light they
• Light travels in straight line.
Sources of light allow to pass through
• Light travels in many
them.
• Natural: Sun directions
• Artificial: Torch • Transparent: Clear water • Reflection.
• Translucent: Oil paper • Refraction.
• Opaque: Stone • Dispersion.
I. Define the terms: [Knowledge]
1) Luminous: Something that gives out light
2) Refraction: Delete the passes from one medium to another. Example light
passes from air to water.
3) Reflection the throwing back or bouncing back by a body or surface of light.
4) Shadow: a black patch formed on the surface when an object blocks the light.
II. State true or false: [Evaluate]
1) Light travels in many directions from its source. True
2) Sound travels faster than the light. False
3) White light is composed of 9 colours. False
4) Raindrop is known as natural prism because it forms rainbow. True
III. Choose the correct answer: [Remember]
1) Luminous objects ____
a. give light of their own b. use light from others
c. do not give light d. gives heat
2) Which of the following is an opaque object?
a. Transparent paper b. table c. water d. glass
3) The shadow will be longer during ___________
a. Morning b. evening c. afternoon d. both a and b
4) The objects that allow only some light to pass through them are called _____
a. opaque b. translucent c. transparent d. none
IV. Differentiate between the following: [Analysis]
1) Transparent and opaque objects.
Transparent Opaque
a) The object that allowed light to The objects that do not allow light to
pass through them completely. pass through them.
b) Shadows are not formed. Shadows are formed
Example: water, glass Example: wood, rocks
V. Answer the following questions:
1) State the different properties of light.
Ans: The different properties of light are:
1. Light travels in the straight line
2. Light can pass from one medium to another.
3. Light travels in many directions from its source
4. Visible light cancel it into 7 colors.
5. Light can bounce back
2) How rainbow is formed? [application]
Ans: Rainbows are formed when light from the sun is scattered by water droplets
(example raindrops or fog) through a process called refraction. Refraction occurs
when the light from the sun changes direction when passing through a medium
denser than air, such as rain drop.
3) Why is it advisable not to study in the dim light? [Understanding]
A: You should not study under dim light as vision is not clear in the dim light. As the
vision is not clear your eyes will be under much rest which can result in weak eyes.
Hence use bright light during studying.
