Meteor-M2 Satellite Weather Image Decoding Guide
This guide walks you through the process of receiving and decoding weather images from the
Russian Meteor-M2 satellite using an RTL-SDR dongle and free software tools.
----------------------------------------
1. Equipment Needed:
----------------------------------------
- RTL-SDR V3 USB Dongle (or similar SDR)
- QFH, Turnstile, or V-Dipole antenna tuned for 137 MHz
- Windows/Linux PC with USB port
- Optional: Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) for better signal
----------------------------------------
2. Software Required:
----------------------------------------
- SDR Software: SDR# (Windows), GQRX (Linux/Mac)
- QPSK Demodulator: meteor_demod
- LDPC Decoder: meteor_ldpc
- Image builder: SatDump, LrptRx, or MeteorGIS
----------------------------------------
3. Step-by-Step Workflow:
----------------------------------------
Step 1: Track Satellite
- Use Gpredict or Heavens-Above to find Meteor-M2 pass times.
- The satellite transmits around 137.100 MHz.
Step 2: Record IQ Data
- Use SDR# or GQRX to tune to 137.100 MHz.
- Record IQ file in WAV or raw format during the satellite pass (~10-15 mins).
Step 3: Demodulate QPSK Signal
- Use meteor_demod to extract QPSK symbols from IQ recording.
Command: meteor_demod [Link] [Link]
Step 4: LDPC Error Correction
- Use meteor_ldpc to decode the LDPC-encoded data.
Command: meteor_ldpc [Link] [Link]
Step 5: Image Decoding
- Use SatDump or MeteorGIS to open the corrected binary file and generate weather images.
----------------------------------------
4. Tips:
----------------------------------------
- Use a high-quality antenna with good visibility of the sky.
- Use AGC (automatic gain control) carefully; manual gain may perform better.
- Expect 3 passes per day depending on your location.
----------------------------------------
5. Output:
----------------------------------------
You will obtain beautiful visible and IR images of Earth showing cloud cover, weather patterns, and
thermal zones.
