Additional Problems

1. (a) Express f (z) = z 3 + i5z − i8 in the form u + iv where u and v are real functions.
(Ans: u(x, y) = x3 − 3xy 2 − 5y, v(x, y) = 3x2 y − y 3 + 5x − 8)
(b) Consider the function f (z) = z 9 − 4z̄. Show that in polar coordinates (r, ϕ) the real
and imaginary component functions of f are given by u(r, ϕ) = r9 cos 9ϕ − 4r cos ϕ
and v(r, ϕ) = r9 sin 9ϕ + 4r sin ϕ, respectively, so that f (z) = u(r, ϕ) + iv(r, ϕ).

2. Find all values of the following in C.

(a) ( 3 − i)300 (Ans: 2300 )
√ √
(b) (−16)1/4 (Ans: ± 2 ± i 2, i.e. 4 solutions)
(c) (−5)π (Ans: 5π (cos(2k + 1)π 2 + i sin(2k + 1)π 2 ), k ∈ Z)
(d) Using only the definition of the complex exponential and log functions, verify that
(−2i)5 = −32i.

(b) |z − (a + i b)| < c (Ans: open disc (interior only) centred at (a, b) with radius c)
(c) |z − i| = |z| (Ans: line y = 1/2)

7. Let (x, y ∈ R).
