THE STRONG AND WEAK
Long ago, there were some lions and hyenas that lived in the same area.
One day, the lion cubs and hyena cubs went out hunting together. The lion
cubs hunted a small and skinny sheep, while the hyenas cubs found a fat
sheep. The lion and hyena cubs saw each other on the road. Each group
was carrying their prey. When the lion cubs saw the catch of the hyenas,
they could not believe their eyes. In low voices, they said, "How can it be
that the hyenas, who do not have much power, can get such a fat animal?
No, it is not possible for them to catch a fatter animal than we did. Let us
go and take their fat sheep."
The lion cubs took the fat sheep from the hyenas by force. The hyena cubs
were very upset about the injustices done to them. They went to their
father and said, "Today, we caught a fat sheep but the lion cubs took it
from us by force."
Their father said, "It is true that lion cubs are more powerful than you.
They took your prey unjustly from you, but you need to be patient. Some
day they will encounter someone more powerful than them." After stealing
the fat sheep from the hyenas, the lion cubs also went to their father and
said, "Look! We took this fat sheep from hyena cubs by force." The lion
father listened to his children and said, "My dear children, it is not good to
use force against the weaker ones. Your actions were not just. It would
have been better if you were contented with what you caught, and leave
what they caught to them."
The lion cubs did not pay attention to the advice of their father. They ate
both the skinny sheep and the fat sheep. Sometime later, the lion cubs
hunted and caught a big gazelle. They were very happy with their catch.
As they were going home, they encountered a big, hungry group of
leopards. When the leopards saw the lion cubs with their prey, they
surrounded them, fought them and took the gazelle by force.
The lion cubs went to their father and cried, "Father, a group of leopards
took our big prey from us by force. What should we do?"
The lion father smiled and said, "So you see, the injustice that you
inflicted to the hyenas has caught up with you. It is not good to use force
against the weaker ones. Let it be a lesson to you. From this day on do not
use force to steal from other animals that are weaker than you."
After that incident, the lion cubs never robbed anyone again. They were
satisfied with what they caught, no matter how big or small it was.
