IStructE EC2 Concrete Mock Solutions

The document provides model solutions for IStructE EC2 Concrete Mock Problems, detailing calculations and design for reinforced concrete slabs, beams, columns, and pad footings. Each section includes ultimate limit state (ULS) loads, factored moments, required reinforcement areas, and checks for deflection and shear. The solutions also specify bar sizes, spacing, and additional design considerations for structural integrity.

IStructE EC2 Concrete Mock Problem Solutions

These are model solutions for the IStructE EC2 Concrete Mock Problems, with formulas,
calculations, and structural sketches guidance.

1. Reinforced Concrete Slab Design – Solution

ULS Load: 1.35×4.0 + 1.5×3.0 = 11.85 kN/m²
Factored moment: M_Ed = wL²/8 = 11.85×5²/8 = 37.0 kNm/m
Assume d = 150 mm, z ≈ 0.9d = 135 mm
A_s = M_Ed / (0.87·f_yd·z) = 37000 / (0.87×435×135) ≈ 727 mm²/m
Provide 12 mm bars @ 150 mm c/c (A_s ≈ 753 mm²/m)
Check A_s,min = 0.0013×1000×150 = 195 mm²/m → OK
Deflection: L/d = 5000/150 ≈ 33 < limit (~26) → increase depth or verify calc
Crack width control: Use bar spacing ≤ 3h and w_k < 0.3 mm

2. Reinforced Concrete Beam – Solution

ULS Load: 1.35×25 = 33.75 kN/m
M_Ed = wL²/8 = 33.75×6²/8 = 151.9 kNm
Assume b=300 mm, d=500 mm, z=0.9d=450 mm
A_s = 151900 / (0.87×435×450) ≈ 870 mm²
Provide 3×20 mm bars = 942 mm²
V_Ed = wL/2 = 33.75×6/2 = 101.25 kN
Check V_Rd,c and provide stirrups if V_Ed > V_Rd,c
Provide links @ 200 mm c/c, 8 mm dia

3. RC Column with Biaxial Bending – Solution

Effective height = 3.5 m, assume slender column
Axial load = 1600 kN, Mx = 50, My = 70 kNm
Section: 400x400 mm, A_c = 160,000 mm²
f_cd = 30/1.5 = 20 MPa, f_yd = 500/1.15 ≈ 435 MPa
n = N_Ed / (A_c·f_cd) = 1600e3 / (160e3×20) = 0.5
Use interaction formula or EC2 column chart
Provide 8 bars (4 corners + mid-faces) = 8×20 mm = 2513 mm² (~1.6%)
Tie spacing = 200 mm, 8 mm stirrups

4. Pad Footing Design – Solution

Load = 1100 kN, allowable soil pressure = 150 kN/m²
Required area = 1100 / 150 = 7.33 m² → Use 2.7×2.7 m = 7.29 m²
Factored pressure q = 1100 / 7.29 = 151 kN/m²
Moment at column face: M = q×(L–a)×L/2 = 151×(2.7–0.3)×2.7/2 ≈ 486 kNm
Assume d = 500 mm, z = 450 mm → A_s = 486000 / (0.87×435×450) ≈ 2850 mm²
Provide 5×20 mm bars in band under column (main direction)
Check shear at 0.75d from face: V_Ed = q×b×x → compare with V_Rd,c
Use T12 mesh for bottom steel in other direction
