A research problem is a specific, evidence-based issue that has significant negative implications for certain individuals or organizations. It should be clearly defined at the beginning of the research process to guide the design and methodology, addressing a gap in current knowledge. A good problem statement includes the problem, a method for solving it, and the purpose of the research.

Research problem – what is a problem?

The world is full of problems not all problems make good research problems, however bcz they
are either too big, complex, or risky for researchers to solve. A proper research problem can be
defined as a specific evidence based, real life issue faced by certain people or organizations that
have significant negative implications on the involved parties.

Example of specific evidence based, real life research problems,” only6% of the ceos in the
fortune 500 companies are woman”

A research problem statement should be written at the beginning of the research process. Writing
a problem statement iearly in the research process helps to guide the research design and
methodology, and ensures that the research is relevant and addresses a gap in current knowledge
or understanding.

Example- Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die.

A problem statement is the description o fthe an issue currently existing which needs to be
addressed. It provides the context for the research study and generates the questions which the
research aims to answer.

The statement of problem is the focal point of any research. A good problem statement is just
one sentence (with several paragraphs of elaboration)

For example- it could be: “the frequency of the jobs layoffs is creating fear, anxiety and a loss of
productivity in the middle management workers.

What are the key components of a research problem?

It has three elements-:

1. The problem itself, stated clearly and with enough contextual detail to estb. Why it is
important.
2. The method of solving the problem, often stated as a claim or a working thesis.
3. The purpose, statement of objective and a scope of the project being proposed.
