Scout Trefoil
The trefoil, which is the main part of the Scout Badge, is the three pointed portion.
Each point represents one of the three points of the Scout Oath: Duty to God and
Country, Duty to Others, and Duty to Self. The single band joining the three points of
the trefoil symbolizes Unity and Universal Brotherhood. The three stars symbolize
the ideals of Faith, Truth, and Knowledge, the foundations of Scout citizenship. They
represent the three geographical divisions of our country: Luzon, Visayas, and
Mindanao. The scroll with the Scout Motto is turned up at its end like a smile. It
reminds us that a Scout is Cheerful. The rope forming a simple overhand knot
reminds us to do a good turn daily, no matter how simple it is.
Scout Sign
The Scout Sign identifies you as a Scout everywhere in the world. Give it each time
you recite the Scout Oath and Law.The three fingers pointing up symbolize the three
points of the Oath. They also signify that a Scout climbs upward to bigger and better
things. The two other fingers stand for the bond of brotherhood and friendship that
ties all Scouts together.
Scout Handshake
When Scouts shake hands they use their left hands. This is a sign of trust and
friendship. Warriors used to carry their spears in their right hand and their shields in
their left hand. To offer your shield hand to another person leaves you open to attack,
and to do so is a great sign of trust. It is also said that your left hand is closer to your
heart, and that may also be a Scouts all over the world shake with their left hands.

8 BASIC KNOTS
1. Overhand knot - Use this knot on both ends of your rope to keep it from
unraveling and as a “stopper” knot.
2. Slip Knot - One of the most frequently tied knots - being used in knitting as
the first loop when casting on - frequently tied as noose. Can be used as a
temporary Stopper knot
3. Figure of 8 - The figure eight follow through is one of the strongest knots. It
forms a secure, non-slip loop at the end of a rope. Also known as the Stopper
knot, this is the most widely used tie-in knot by mountain climbers. The reason
is that it is strong, secure and easy to visually inspect.
4. Sheepshank - Unreliable knot used to shorten a length of rope. Typically
used for securing loads to trucks or trailers, and in sailing application
5. Clove Hitch - used to adjust the height of stage curtains hanging from a bar;
and in boating it can be used initially to position a fender hanging from a rail
6. Timber Hitch - is used to attach a rope to a log. This knot tightens under
strain, but comes undone extremely easily when the rope is slack
7. Square Knot - The reef knot or square knot is an ancient and simple binding
knot used to secure a rope or line around an object.
8. Bowline Knot - The structure of the bowline is identical to that of the sheet
bend, except the bowline forms a loop in one rope and the sheet bend joins
two ropes. Along with the sheet bend and the clove hitch, the bowline is often
considered one of the most essential knots.
FIRST AID
First aid – caring for injured or ill persons until they can receive professional medical
care – is an important skill for every Scout. With some knowledge of first aid, a Scout
can provide immediate care and help to someone who is hurt or who becomes ill.
First aid can help prevent infection and serious loss of blood. It could even save a
limb or a life.
