use of Loctite.
n Safety advice (hazard keys)

[Link] High voltage

Dangerous voltages may be present.

Switch off the main power supply before working on the system and secure the system
against unintended switch-on.
 Allow at least two minutes discharge time after switching off the system. Prior to start‐
ing work on the components indicated below, measure the voltage level in the PDS
(right gantry stand) between D450 X7 and X9 for the Spirit, or between slip ring X10
and X12 for Emotion 6/16 (2007). The voltage must be below 40 V DC.

10 1 General information

1.2 Important information

1.2.1 Gantry / PHS adjustments

The adjustments for the PHS and gantry (such as the frequency converter for rotation or
tilt) are described in the respective chapter in the document “Replacement of Parts Gan‐
try / PHS” (CT02-025.841.03).

1.2.2 IMS adjustments

IMS system adjustments (such as the monitor) are described in the document “Replace‐
ment of Parts IMS” (CT02-025.841.04) in the respective replacement section.

1.2.3 System-specific information

 Only phantoms delivered with the CT system may be used for system adjustments.

The density of the water in the phantom depends on the water temperature. Changing
the water temperature by 1° Kelvin corresponds to changing the water equivalent by 0.3

 HU (Houndsfield units) in the CT image.

The water phantom has to be stored at a constant temperature of 23°C ±1°C.
For measurements, the water temperature in the phantom has to be 23°C ±1°C.

 Changing the vertical table position always changes the horizontal table position.

 No other functions are allowed during the adjustment procedures.

 The Plexiglass strip gap must be in the 11 o’clock position.

3.5 Adaptation of the generator oscillator frequency

3.5.1 General information

These components comprise a resonance circuit:
n HV tank (H1)
n D400
n Generator electronics box
As a result, it is necessary to determine the system-specific resonance frequency of these
components. For this reason, the generator electronics (GEL) adjust to the optimal oscilla‐
tor frequency during this procedure. The result is stored in the XRS controller.
When replacing one of the above components, you have to repeat the adjustment proce‐
dure.

3.5.2 Procedure
n Remove all absorbers from the measurement field.
n Switch to the service mode Options > Service > Local Service.
n Select Tune-up.
n Select Expert Mode.
n Select GenOsc.
n Select Go.
n Press START.

3.6 Tube gettering

3.6.1 General information

Gettering is required after the X-ray tube is replaced or in response to frequent tube arc‐
ing.
The getter procedure is used to:
n Check the HV behavior of the X-ray tube
n Improve the HV stability of the X-ray tube, if insufficient
n Guarantee the HV stability of a new X-ray tube
This procedure is also known as “conditioning the X-ray tube.” After you start the proce‐
dure with the voltage selected, the program automatically performs a specific number of
scans. If the tube arcs, the auto-repeat function attempts to repeat the scans to obtain a
specific number of scans without arcing. If the tube does not arc during these scans, the
voltage is automatically switched to the next higher kV step. Gettering is completed when
the highest kV step has been performed without tube arcing.

3.6.2 Procedure
n Select Tune-up.
n Select Expert Mode.
n Select Getter.
n Select Start voltage (kV): 80 kV.
n Switch on "Auto repeat after tube arcing".
n Select Go.
n Press START.
n When all gettering procedure steps have been completed without errors,
the message "Gettering completed" appears.

3.7 Z-adjustment of the tube collimator

3.7.1 General information

The function of the Z-adjustment is to find the Z-position of the tube collimator where the
maximum signal intensity is measured by the detector.
First, the tube is heated up automatically ( > 1,000 K ). This is followed by a cool-down
phase to a tube temperature of approx. 950 K. After that, the Z-adjustment procedure
starts.
The adjustment starts with a defined movement of the tube-side diaphragm toward the
back of the gantry. Measurements are taken incrementally with each position in the op‐
posite direction. The optimal tube diaphragm positions for the low, middle, and high
channels of the detector are determined in static mode (no rotation). In addition, the op‐
timal positions for two rotation times are determined. During the adjustment, the dia‐
phragm blades are moved accordingly.

3.7.2 Procedure
n Select Tune-up.
n Select Expert Mode.
n Select ZAdjust.
n Select Go.
n Press START.
n After the Z-adjustment procedure has been completed:
Select Go (to save the results).
(The message "Z-adjustment of tube collimator successfully completed" appears).

3.7.3 Mechanical adjustment

The Z-adjustment procedure also checks whether the collimator is positioned parallel to
the detector system.

 If the adjustment of the slotted plate in the collimator box is out of tolerance, the system
has to be adjusted mechanically.
To adjust the collimator box mechanically, the collimator adjustment tool is required
(part no. 38 12 604).

If a mechanical adjustment is necessary, the following message appears during the Z-ad‐
just procedure:
The adjustment of the tube collimator is out of range.
Click Cancel to start the adjustment procedure or Click Go to accept this adjustment.
n Select Cancel to start the mechanical adjustment procedure or select Go to accept
this adjustment (for service purposes only; image quality may be poor)

3.8 Z-position check of the tube diaphragm

3.8.1 General information

To ensure a maximum output signal for the detector elements, the X-ray beam has to be
centered precisely over the detector. The ZCheck procedure provides you with a quick
check of the X-ray beam alignment.
The reference value of the tube diaphragm determined via ZAdjust is the starting point of
the quick check. The diaphragm is then shifted symmetrically in both Z-directions. The
measured detector element output has to follow symmetrical thresholds, as long as the Z-
adjustment is still within tolerance. This procedure is automatically added to the customer
"check-up" procedure at specific intervals.
If the result of the ZCheck is out of specification, please perform the ZAdjust procedure.

 There is no need to perform the ZCheck procedure if you have just completed the ZAd‐
just.

3.9 Focus alignment

3.9.1 General information

The FocusAli procedure adjusts the electromagnetic focus deflection (flying focal spot)
with respect to the parameters of different:
n Rotation times
n Integration times of the DMS
n Focus size
To determine the electromagnetic behavior of the focus deflection circuit, the following
adjustments are necessary:
n Phase: This step determines the synchronization (delay) between the DMS and focus
deflection.
n Amplitude: Based on the neutral position, the amplitude of the focus deflection is de‐
termined in mm. With the phase specified, the amplitude is set so that the deflection
equals half the width of one detector element.
n Offset: With the phase and amplitude specified, the offset of the focus deflection is
set so that the central beam is exactly in the center of the detector.
The procedure adjusts the settings for phase, amplitude, and offset for all combinations
of these parameters.

To avoid creation of incorrect adjustment values during tune up, only phantoms deliv‐

ered with the CT system may be used for system adjustments.
In addition, water phantom temperature must be the same as examination room tem‐
perature.

3.11 Generator adaptation

(The plexiglass strip has to be installed.)

3.11.1 General information

The objective of the generator adaptation procedure is to set the generator parameters
(filament current, tube current, and dose) so that a specific noise value is guaranteed
across the entire power (kW) range. For this reason, the noise value (sigma) is measured
in a 20 cm water phantom with different power (kW) steps.
The generator adaptation has to be performed for:

3.12 Filament adaptation

3.12.1 General information

The objective of the FilAdapt procedure is to adapt the filament current to changes in the
filament due to evaporation. The filament current is adjusted to reach the X-ray dose val‐
ues determined via the GenAdapt procedure. The generator adaptation procedure opti‐
mizes the filament current, i.e. you do not have to perform the filament adaptation pro‐
cedure after you have run a generator adaptation.
This procedure is automatically added to the customer "check-up" procedure at specific in‐
tervals.

 There is no need to perform the filament adaptation procedure if you have just comple‐
ted the generator adaptation.

3.14 Defective channel correction

(The plexiglass strip has to be installed.)

3.14.1 General information

 After performing a “Defective channel correction” procedure, the tune-up steps “Channel
Correction”, “Air Calibration”, and “Spacing” have to be performed.

Basically, defective channels are handled in two different ways:

[Link] Automatic defective channel detection:

Standard procedure recommended for service purposes.

The program “automatic defective channel detection” deletes the old automatic defec‐
tive channel list and subsequently creates a new automatic defective channel list.

Channels requiring manual switch-off cannot be deleted via the automatic procedure.
 The program “automatic defective channel detection” is also performed during the
“checkup” procedure. However, the detected defective channels are valid only tempora‐
rily until the next “checkup” procedure is performed. No additional tune up steps are re‐
quired after the “checkup” procedure.

[Link] Manual defective channel detection:

To switch off defective channels manually, special detector knowledge about multi-slice
techniques is required.
Manual defective channel correction is performed only if the defective channel cannot be
detected automatically (when values are too rough or problem is sporadic).

 Channels switched off manually can be reactivated only by using the same manual pro‐
cedure.

3.15 Channel correction

(The plexiglass strip has to be installed.)

3.15.1 General information

The ChannelCorrection procedure compensates for the difference in attenuated signals
from detector element to detector element. The correction has to be made for different
scan parameters (such as kV, slice width, etc.) as well as the density of the absorbers and
the path covered within an absorber. For this reason, head and body absorbers are used
when determining the correction tables. The correction tables comprise linear and square
root parts.

To avoid creation of incorrect adjustment values during tune up, only phantoms deliv‐

ered with the CT system may be used for system adjustments.
In addition, water phantom temperature must be the same as examination room tem‐
perature.

3.16 Air calibration

(The plexiglass strip has to be installed.)

3.16.1 General information

The channels of the measurement system have different levels of sensitivity that are com‐
pensated for by Air Calibration. Air calibration consists of two major steps, base calibra‐
tion and difference calibration.
The objective of base calibration is to determine the changes in sensitivity caused by the
present environmental conditions. For this reason, base calibration has to be performed
on a daily basis. This function is selected automatically when the system is switched on.
In addition, the customer can run base calibration under “Setup > Calibration”, as re‐
quired.
The objective of the difference calibration procedure is to determine the structural differ‐
ences in sensitivity for the various scan modes (kV, mA, slice width, rotation time, etc.).
For this reason, difference calibration tables are generated during tune-up only.
Air calibration checks whether an absorber is in the X-ray beam. If the message indicates
“There may be an object in the scan field...” although no absorber is in the X-ray beam,
the reason could be contrast on the plexiglass strip, a defective channel, or the adjust‐
ment of the collimator box (ZAdjust).
With software version VB15, wait times between the KV steps are no longer required.

3.16.2 Procedure
n Remove all absorbers from the measurement field.
n Select Tune-up.
n Select Expert Mode.
n Select Air Calibration.
n Click select all (all modes are selected).
n Select Go.

3.17 Spacing correction

(The plexiglass strip has to be installed.)

3.17.1 General information

This procedure is used to correct the equidistance (mechanical) behavior of the single de‐
tector elements. These so-called "spacing errors" can result in visible artifacts in tomo‐
grams.
The Spacing correction mathematically equalizes the different distances of the single de‐
tector elements. For this reason, a spacing correction table is created to compensate for
spacing errors during image reconstruction.

To avoid creation of incorrect adjustment values during tune up, only phantoms deliv‐

ered with the CT system may be used for system adjustments.
In addition, water phantom temperature must be the same as examination room tem‐
perature.

3.18 Water scaling

(The plexiglass strip has to be installed.)

3.18.1 General information

The density of water is defined as 0 HU on the Hounsfield scale. To ensure this condition,
each measurement value is multiplied by a scaling factor during pre-processing. These
scaling factors are determined via the WaterScaling procedure function. The scaling fac‐
tors have to be generated for each scan parameter (kV, slice width, etc.).

To avoid creation of incorrect adjustment values during tune up, only phantoms deliv‐

ered with the CT system may be used for system adjustments.
In addition, water phantom temperature must be the same as examination room tem‐
perature.

6.4 Adaptation of the generator oscillator frequency

6.4.1 General information

These components comprise a resonance circuit:
n HV tank (H1)
n D400
n Generator electronics box
As a result, it is necessary to determine the system-specific resonance frequency of these
components. For this reason, the generator electronics (GEL) adjust to the optimal oscilla‐
tor frequency during this procedure. The result is stored in the XRS controller. The adjust‐
ment uses a special static mode and takes about 80 seconds.
When replacing one of the above components, you have to repeat the adjustment proce‐
dure.

6.5 Tube gettering

6.5.1 General information

6.5.2 Procedure
n Select Tune-up.
n Select Expert Mode.
n Select Getter.
n Select Start voltage (kV): 80 kV.
n Switch on "Auto repeat after tube arcing".
n Select Go.
n Press START.
n When all steps of the gettering procedure have been completed without errors,
the message "Gettering completed" appears.

6.6 Z-adjustment of the tube collimator

6.6.1 General information

In addition, the op‐
timal positions for all collimator slots are determined in rotation mode. During the adjust‐
ment, the diaphragm blades are moved accordingly.

6.7 Z-position check of the tube diaphragm

6.7.1 General information

To ensure a maximum output signal for the detector elements, the X-ray beam has to be
centered precisely over the detector. The ZCheck procedure provides you with a quick
check of the X-ray beam alignment.
The reference value of the tube diaphragm determined via ZAdjust is the starting point of
the quick check. The diaphragm is then shifted symmetrically in both Z-directions. The
measured detector element output has to follow symmetrical thresholds, as long as the Z-
adjustment is still within tolerance.
If the result of the ZCheck is out of specification, please perform the ZAdjust procedure.

6.8 Focus alignment

6.8.1 General information

The FocusAli procedure adjusts the electromagnetic focus deflection (flying focal spot)
with respect to the parameters of different:
n Rotation times
n Integration times of the DMS
n Focus sizes (small/large)

Only the original phantoms (delivered with the system) can be used.

 Vertical and horizontal positioning of the phantom is performed automatically at a pre‐

defined table height. For this reason, only the original phantom holder (delivered with
the system) can be used.( Fig. 19 Page 65)

6.13 Defective channel correction

6.13.1 General information

To avoid image artifacts:

 After performing a “defective channel correction” procedure and a new defective chan‐
nel is detected, or a defective channel is reactivated, the tune-up steps “Channel Correc‐
tion”, “Air Calibration”, and “Spacing” have to be performed.

[Link] Editing the defective channel table manually:

To switch off defective channels manually, special detector knowledge about multi-slice
techniques is required.
Manual defective channel correction is performed only if the defective channel cannot be
detected automatically (when values are too rough or problem is sporadic).

 Channels switched off manually can be reactivated only by using the same manual pro‐
cedure.

6.15 Air calibration

(The plexiglass strip has to be installed).

6.15.1 General information

The channels of the measurement system have different levels of sensitivity that are com‐
pensated for by Air Calibration. Air calibration consists of two major steps, base calibra‐
tion and difference calibration.
The objective of base calibration is to determine the changes in sensitivity caused by the
present environmental conditions. For this reason, base calibration has to be performed
on a daily basis. This function is selected automatically when the system is switched on.
In addition, the customer can run base calibration under “Setup/Calibration”, as required.
If the message “There
may be an object in the scan field...” is displayed and no absorber is in the X-ray beam,
the reasons could be contrast on the plexiglass strip, a defective channel, or the adjust‐

6.16.1 General information

This procedure is used to correct the equidistance (mechanical) behavior of the single de‐

6.17 Water scaling

(The plexiglass strip has to be installed).

6.17.1 General information

The density of water is defined as 0 HU on the Hounsfield scale. To ensure this condition,
each measurement value is multiplied by a scaling factor during pre-processing. These
scaling factors are determined via the WaterScaling procedure function. The scaling fac‐
tors have to be generated for each scan parameter (kV, slice width, etc.).

The density of water is a function of its temperature. A difference of +10 Kelvin (18 de‐
grees Fahrenheit) results in a difference of -3 HU on the CT scale. For reproducible scal‐
ing factors, the water temperature inside the phantom has to be the same for all <Water‐

Scaling > procedures (QUALITY/CONSTANCY). For this reason, it is recommended that
the water phantom be stored in the scan room to ensure a constant water temperature
level.
Approx. 5 hours are required for the water in the phantom to compensate for a 10 Kel‐
vin difference in temperature (18 degrees Fahrenheit).

Only the original phantoms (delivered with the system) can be used.

 Vertical and horizontal positioning of the phantom is performed automatically at a pre‐

8.2 Constancy test functions

8.2.1 Testing the position of the light markers

n Position the slice thickness phantom in the measurement field so that light beams of
the interior light markers are centered above the upper cross markings on the phan‐
tom.
n Perform the measurement and evaluate the Z-position of the measurement phantom
in the slice plane.
n The phantom has to be positioned precisely in the Z-direction of the slice plane. The Z-
position is correct when the long and short bars overlap in the tomogram.

8.2.2 Slice thickness

Slice thickness is tested using the slice thickness phantom. The phantom contains two
aluminum strips 100 x 25 x 0.2 mm.
The following are prerequisites for accurately determining the slice thickness:
n The phantom has to be centered in the measurement field and may not be tilted for‐
ward.
n The phantom has to be positioned precisely in the Z-direction of the slice plane.
n Both aluminum strips have to be positioned horizontally in the tomogram.
n The program uses the tomogram to compute the actual slice thickness for all selecta‐
ble slice thicknesses.

8.2.3 Water value and image pixel noise (NOISE)

n The water phantom is positioned in the center of the measurement field.
n In each tomogram, the CT numbers are measured in a test area.
n The pixel noise is calculated from two tomograms of the water phantom taken in se‐
quence using the standard deviation of the CT numbers of a defined test area in the
difference image.
n In addition, this test determines the high voltage at the X-ray tube.

8.2.4 Homogeneity
n The water phantom is positioned in the center of the measurement field.
n In each tomogram, the CT numbers are measured in a total of five test areas. (Each
test area covers between 2% and 5% of the slice area of the phantom.)
n The absolute value of the difference between the average CT number of the center
test area and the CT numbers of the four peripheral test areas is the homogeneity.

8.2.5 Contrast scale

n The contrast scale (CS) indicates the change in the attenuation coefficient of a water-
equivalent material required to change the average CT number of this material by 1.
n An air measurement is performed to determine the contrast scale.

8.2.6 High-contrast resolution

n The spatial resolution during high contrast is determined by evaluating the MTF.
n A wire phantom and special evaluation software are used to calculate the MTF.
n The resolution is displayed in line pairs per centimeter (LP/cm) for 50% MTF, 10% MTF,
and 2% MTF.

8.2.7 Tabletop positions

A 70 kg weight is positioned on the tabletop (at the foot end). After attaching a label to
the moving and stationary parts of the patient table, the tabletop is automatically fed in
and fed out at a defined distance.
Follow the program instructions.

8.3 Acceptance test functions

8.3.1 Low-contrast resolution

An image of the low-contrast phantom is generated while positioned in the center of the
measurement field.
The spatial resolution is visually evaluated for low contrast. The 5 mm holes have to be
visible in the image of the phantom.

8.3.2 Dose in the system axis

n Center an ionization chamber axially in the system axis so that the slice plane runs
through the center of the chamber.
n The ionization chamber has to be connected to a special dosimeter.
n The length dose product (LDP/mGy x cm) displayed by the dosimeter is manually en‐
tered in the input field (ZZ = number of detector rows).
n The program computes the dose in the system axis according to the following
formula:
Fig. 33: Dose in the system axis

LDP ( mGy cm )
Dose( mGy) = ---------------------------------------------------------------
Sl i ce thickness (cm) x ZZ

8.3.3 Topogram dose

n An ionization chamber is attached to the tabletop.
n The chamber is centered axially in the measurement field to ensure that the chamber
is fully irradiated during the topogram.
n The ionization chamber is connected to a special dosimeter.
n The length dose product (LDP/mGy x cm) displayed by the dosimeter is manually en‐
tered in the input field.
n The program computes the dose in the system axis according to the following
formula:
Fig. 34: Topogram dose

LDP ( mGy cm )
Dose( mGy) = ----------------------------------------------------
chamber length (cm)

8.3.4 Dose rate profile

n The dose rate profile is measured in air with an X-ray film.

n A CCR-phantom should be used as the film holder. Position the upper edge of the
phantom in the center of the gantry (tolerance 5 mm).
n Position the film in the system axis and perpendicular to the main beam.
n Move the film in the Z-direction prior to each scan with a different slice thickness.
n After the film is developed, average the entire width of each exposed strip and man‐
ually enter it in the input field.

8.3.5 Tilt angle of the slice plane

n The position of the slice plane changes by the same amount. The deviation between
mechanical and electronic display of tilt angles from +15˚ to -15˚ is measured; the de‐
viation is entered manually in the input field.
n Measure the tilt angle mechanically, using a spirit level on the gantry cover.
n The tilt angle displayed by the system may not deviate from the measured angle by
more than 2 degrees.
