Proposed Revised Grading System

The proposed revised grading system emphasizes outcomes-based education, integrating formative and summative evaluations to assess student learning and instructional effectiveness. Formative evaluations include quizzes and classroom interactions, while summative evaluations consist of term examinations and cumulative work, each with specified weightings. The computation of grades involves converting raw scores to percentage scores, which are then weighted according to their respective components to determine final grades.

PROPOSED REVISED GRADING SYSTEM

OUTCOMES-BASED EDUCATION: Curriculum , Instruction & Assessment

ASSESSMENT: Complementary to Instruction & Vital Aspect of Curriculum
Implementation
EVALUATION : Assessment of : student learning and performance; effectiveness of
teaching and learning methods; achievement of desired outcomes and objectives of the
curriculum, and merit, worth, or significance of learning program -guides in initiating
curricular changes and innovations (Print, 1993 ;Ornstein & Hunkins, 1998).
1.Formative Evaluation (During implementation of the course curriculum experience)
a. feedback to improve learning throughout a course;
b. check the effectiveness of instruction ;
c. gather informatpion about student understanding;
e. help students learn how to self-asses and regulate their learning ;
f. help improve summative evaluation.
Assessment Tools: Quizzes, Question sessions, Journals, Observation, and other
individual or collaborative Informal Assessments
2. Summative Evaluation (After completion of the course curriculum)
a. assesses if the goals, objectives, program and course outcomes are met
b. informs decision for curricular changes and innovations
c. helps determine the level of success of the College VMGO
Assessment Tools: End-of-term Test/Term Examination, Cumulative Work, Portfolios of
Learning

Procedures in the Computation of Student’s Grade

1. . Raw Scores (RS) from each component /criteria should be converted into
Percentage Score (PS). This is to ensure that values are parallel to each other.
2. . To compute the Percentage Score (PS) , divide the Raw Score (RS) by the
highest possible score then multiply the quotient by 100%.
PERCENTAGE SCORE (PS) = Student’s Total Raw Score x 100 %
Highest Possible Score
3. Percentage Scores are then converted into Weighted Score (WS). To do this,
the Percentage Score is multiplied by the weight of the component
WEIGHTED SCORE (WS) = Percentage Sore (PS) x Weight of Component
Component
Weight
1.Quiz
- 25%
2. Classroom Interaction
- 15 %
3. Term Examination
- 40%
4. Cumulative Work/Portfolios/Major Course Requirement
- 20%
Important Note:
a. Since there are four examinations( Prelim & Midterm /Semi-Final & Final Term ) ,
every examination is weighted 20%; e.g. Prelim- 20% & Midterm 20 % ; sum up the
two examinations Weighted Scores divided by 2 then multiply by the Weight of the
Component.
b. Same process is done for Pre -Final and Final Term examinations results.
4. The sum of the Weighted Score of each component is the grade of the student in
the course, to be reflected as the MidTerm Grade.
5. Following the steps above, the computed Final Term Grade of the student is the
Initial or Tentative Grade, since the grading system to be adopted is cumulative .
This is to give credit to the performance and achievement of the student in the first
half of the semester.
6. For the Final Term Grade computation :
a. Mid-Term Grade - 40%
b. Initial /Tentative Final Grade - 60%
____________
7. The sum of the Weighted Score is the Final Term Grade of the student to be
reflected in the Final Grade column of the Grade Sheet.
8. Valid Remarks in the Grade sheet: Passed; Failed; For Dropped - No
Attendance ;
For Incomplete grade : only applicable for the student’s failure to take the
Final Term Examination as well as the Removal Examination, with due notice
(Acad Council Resolution No.3, s. 2025).
Please take note that other components of the Grading System are deemed episodic,
time-bound and are explicitly stated in the Course Syllabus provided to the
students in the first week of classes). Strict compliance to this academic practice will
certainly teach our students self-regulation , self-growth, independence,
responsibility and accountability for their own learning.

For Discussion: What should be the LOWEST MARK to appear in the Grade Sheet?
