HOLY SCRIPTURE READINGS

READING OF THE GOSPEL:

I would like to read to you the GOSPEL OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST through our dear Brother
the Apostle Matthew, found is in MARK 10: 13-16, which says;

13And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his
disciples rebuked those that brought them.
14But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the
little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of
God.
15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a
little child, he shall not enter therein.
16And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.
This is the GOSPEL of our LORD JESUS CHRIST.
PEOPLE: Thanks be unto our LORD & SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST.

BISHOP DR. +SLVILLAESTER: Shine within our hearts LORD JESUS CHRIST, open the eyes
of our minds that we may comprehend the message of YOUR GOSPEL. Instill in us reverence
for YOUR blessed Commandments and may our lives be pleasing to YOU. In the name of the
FATHER, SON and of the HOLY SPIRIT. Amen!

The Grace of our LORD JESUS CHRIST, and the LOVE OF GOD THE FATHER, and the fellowship
of the HOLY SPIRIT be with you all.
PEOPLE: And also with you.

The Heart of a Child

Scripture: Mark 10:13-16 (NIV)

"People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but
the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them,
‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God
belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of
God like a little child will never enter it.’ And he took the children in his arms, placed his
hands on them and blessed them."
Introduction:
In this passage, we encounter Jesus in one of the most tender and revealing moments
of His ministry. The scene presents children being brought to Him for a blessing, only to
be met with rebuke from the disciples. But Jesus' response highlights something
profound about the nature of the kingdom of God and the posture with which we
should approach Him.
3 Points:
1. The Heart of Jesus Towards Children

The disciples rebuked those bringing children to Jesus. Perhaps they thought He was
too busy, that His work was too important to be interrupted by something they viewed
as trivial. But when Jesus saw this, Mark tells us He was indignant.

This reaction is important. Jesus was deeply offended by the disciples' attitude. Why?
Because children are precious in His sight. They are not a distraction or an
inconvenience. Jesus welcomes them and desires to bless them.

In fact, throughout the Gospels, we see that Jesus consistently uplifted the humble, the
marginalized, and those whom society often overlooked. In that culture, children were
seen as insignificant, yet Jesus placed them at the center, reminding us that the
kingdom of God is not about status, importance, or being "grown-up." It’s about
humility, simplicity, and openness.

Application:
This is a reminder for us today—both as parents and as a community of faith. How
often do we prioritize our own agendas, neglecting to nurture the spiritual lives of our
children? Jesus shows us that children are not too young or too insignificant to receive
His grace. We are called to lead them to Christ, for He delights in blessing them.

2. The Lesson of Childlike Faith

Jesus then uses this moment to teach His disciples and us a powerful truth: “The
kingdom of God belongs to such as these”. He continues by saying, “Truly I tell you,
anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God like a little child?

Children embody certain characteristics that Jesus points to as essential for entering His
kingdom:

• Trust: Children have a natural ability to trust completely. They rely on their
parents without question, confident that they will be cared for. Jesus is calling us
to have that same trust in our Heavenly Father.
• Humility: Children come without pretense. They aren’t concerned with status,
and they don’t try to prove themselves. They simply come as they are. Jesus
wants us to approach Him with humility, acknowledging our dependence on His
grace.
• Openness to Receive: Children are eager to receive gifts, and they do so
joyfully. The kingdom of God is a gift that cannot be earned or achieved through
our efforts. It is something we must receive freely, just as a child receives a gift.

Application:
Do we come to God with a childlike faith? Or do we come with conditions, with pride, or
with self-reliance? Jesus tells us that the only way to enter the kingdom is to let go of
our self-sufficiency and approach God with the simplicity, trust, and openness of a child.

3. The Warning Against Spiritual Pride

The disciples’ rebuke of those bringing children reveals something troubling: a form of
spiritual pride. They assumed that they knew better than the parents or even Jesus
about what was appropriate.

This spiritual pride can often creep into our own hearts. We can fall into the trap of
thinking that the kingdom of God is for those who are spiritually mature,
knowledgeable, or accomplished. But Jesus flips this thinking upside down. He says,
“The kingdom belongs to such as these”—those who come not with achievements, but
with empty hands.
Jesus warns us against the danger of thinking we can earn our way into God’s kingdom
or that we deserve it more than others. The kingdom is not about what we bring, but
about what we receive.

Application:
We need to examine our own hearts. Are we guilty of spiritual pride? Do we look down
on others, thinking we are closer to God because of our knowledge, status, or piety?
Jesus reminds us that unless we come like children—with humility, trust, and
dependence on God’s grace—we will not enter His kingdom.

Conclusion:

In this short but powerful passage, Jesus shows us the kind of heart that delights Him.
He welcomes the humble and the dependent, and He calls us to approach Him with
childlike faith.

Let us reflect on these truths:

• May we have the heart of Jesus toward children and all who are often
overlooked.
• May we cultivate a childlike faith, trusting, humble, and open to receive the gift
of His kingdom.
• And may we guard against the dangers of spiritual pride, remembering that we
enter the kingdom not by our own merit but by His grace alone.

Let the children come. And may we come with them—hearts full of wonder and trust,
ready to receive the blessings of the Kingdom. Amen.
