Section 1: Identification
 Product Name: PAC R
 Chemical Name: Polyanionic Cellulose (PAC)
 CAS Number: 9004-32-4

Section 2: Hazard Identification

 Classification: Combustible Dust – Category 1
 Signal Word: Warning
 Hazard Statements: May form combustible dust concentrations in air
 Precautionary Statements:
o Prevention: Prevent dust accumulation to minimize explosion hazard. Keep away from heat, hot
surfaces, sparks, open flames, and other ignition sources. No smoking. Ground and bond
container and receiving equipment. Use explosion-proof electrical, ventilating, and lighting
equipment. Use non-sparking tools.
o Response: In case of fire, use CO2, dry chemical, or foam for extinction.

Section 3: Composition/Information on Ingredients

 Chemical Name: Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose
 CAS Number: 9004-32-4
 Concentration: 97 – 100% (w/w)

Section 4: First Aid Measures

 Skin Contact: Brush away excess material and wash with water. If irritation develops, obtain
medical attention.
 Eye Contact: Immediately flush with gently flowing warm water until particles are removed. If
irritation persists, obtain medical attention.
 Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. Drink 1 to 2 glasses of water. If symptoms develop, obtain
medical attention. Never give anything by mouth if the patient is unconscious, rapidly losing
consciousness, or convulsing.
 Inhalation: Move to fresh air. Apply oxygen or artificial respiration if required. Obtain
immediate medical attention if breathing difficulties or distress continues.
Section 5: Fire-Fighting Measures
 Extinguishing Media: Use dry chemical, Carbon dioxide (CO2), foam, or water spray for
extinction.
 Special Hazards: Fire may produce irritating and/or toxic fumes, including oxides of carbon.

Section 6: Accidental Release Measures

 Personal Precautions: Ensure adequate ventilation. Eliminate all ignition sources. Do not touch
or walk through spilled material. Avoid dust formation. Avoid breathing dust and contact with
eyes, skin, and clothing.
 Clean Up Procedures: Collect material (sweep or vacuum up) and place it in suitable containers
for disposal. If appropriate, moisten first or cover with damp absorbent to avoid generating
dusty conditions.

Section 7: Handling and Storage

 Handling: Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Avoid dust
formation. Avoid breathing dust and contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Do not ingest. Use
personal protective equipment as required.
 Storage: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, out of direct sunlight. Keep container
tightly closed. Keep away from excessive heat and sources of ignition.

Section 8: Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

 Respiratory Protection: Wear respiratory protection in case of inadequate ventilation or if an
inhalation risk exists. Recommended: Dust mask/particulate respirator.
 Eye Protection: Wear appropriate eye protection to avoid eye contact. Recommended: Safety
glasses.
 Hand Protection: Handle with gloves. Recommended: Impervious gloves.
 Skin/Body Protection: Wear appropriate personal protective clothing to avoid skin contact.
Recommended: Overalls, safety shoes.

Section 9: Physical and Chemical Properties

 Appearance: Off-white powder
 Odor: Odorless
 pH: 6 – 8.5 (1% aqueous solution)
 Melting Point/Freezing Point: Not available
 Boiling Point/Range: Not available
 Flash Point: Not applicable
 Specific Gravity: 1.5
 Solubility: Soluble in water; forms gel
 Auto-Ignition Temperature: 170°C (Method: EN 15188)

Section 10: Stability and Reactivity

 Chemical Stability: Stable under normal conditions
 Conditions to Avoid: Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces, and sources of ignition. Dust
may form explosive mixture in air.
 Incompatible Materials: Keep away from strong oxidizers.
 Hazardous Decomposition Products: Fire/decomposition may produce irritating and/or toxic
fumes, including oxides of carbon.

Section 11: Toxicological Information

 Health Effects:
o Inhalation: May cause mild respiratory irritation.
o Eye Contact: May cause slight irritation.
o Skin Contact: May cause drying.
o Ingestion: No adverse effects expected from incidental ingestion.
 Carcinogenicity: Not listed by IARC, NTP, ACGIH, or OSHA.
 Other Health Effects: Long-term exposure to high dust concentrations may cause non-
debilitating lung changes.

Section 12: Ecological Information

 Ecotoxicity: LC50 > 100 mg/L/96 hr (danio rerio)
 Persistence and Degradability: Inherently biodegradable.
 Bio accumulative Potential: Not likely to bio accumulate.
 Environmental Fate: Prevent entry into drains and waterways.

Section 13: Disposal Considerations

 Waste Treatment Methods: Dispose/incinerate in accordance with federal, state, and local
regulations. It is the responsibility of the end-user to determine if material meets the criteria of
hazardous waste at the time of disposal.
