Ourselves

People are also called humans. Your friends, families, babies, teenagers, adults and older people are all
humans. Humans are living things.
 How do you know you are a living thing?
 What do you do that shows you are alive?

Make a book called “All about me! “

Same, similar and different


Humans are the same in many ways. We all have two legs, two arms, a head and a body. Humans do not
look the same. We may look similar. But humans are different sizes. We like different things. We are
similar in some ways and different in other ways.

Some parts of your body are on the outside, You can see them.

Similarities and differences


Humans are the same in many ways. We all have legs, arms, a head, elbows and feet. But all humans do not
look the same. We have differences.
Some humans who look the same. They are called twins.
Humans are the same or similar in some ways and different in other ways. Humans wear different sized
shoes.
All humans have a head, eyes, ears, nose and a mouth. But all these things may look different.

The five senses
Humans have five senses. They are sight (see), touch (feel), hearing, taste and smell. We use our senses to
help us find out about the world.

Your eyes

 Eyebrows keep sweat out of your eyes.


 Eyelids shut out light so that you can sleep. Eyelids also stop things from getting into your eyes.
 The iris opens and closes the pupil.
 Pupils let light into your eyes so that you can see.
 Eyelashes protect your eyes from dust and sand.

Lyla has an eye test
Lyla goes to the optometrist. The optometrist checks her eyes. The
optometrist uses science in her job. She must know how eyes work and what
can go wrong with them.
Lyla reads letters on the eye chart. Lyla looks through a machine which has
lots of lenses.

The optometrist then tells Lyla that her eyes are fine, and that she does not
require glasses.

The doctor asks Lyla if she knows how to take care of her eyes and she responds by saying that she must
not look at the Sun or spend too much time on the computer or watching TV and that she must tell someone
if her eyes hurt.
Our eyes help us to see things:
 More clearly
 That are far away
 That are very small

The five senses – Touch
We feel things with our hands or with other parts of our body.

Activity 6
a. Draw around your hand.
b. Draw in the other parts of your hand, like your nails and knuckles.
c. Label these parts of your hand – finger, thumb, nail, knuckle, wrist
Our sense of touch helps us to feel the texture of something. Texture is how something feels such as rough,
smooth, hard or soft.
The five senses – Smell
We use our nose to smell things. Other animals also use their noses to smell. The nose has two holes, called
nostrils.
We like some smells. We do not like other smells. Our sense of smell helps to keep us safe.
We can smell food that has gone bad. If we ate the bad food, it would make us ill.
We can smell smoke from fire. If we went near the fire, it could burn us.

The five senses – Taste


When we eat, we sense different tastes. Taste buds help us to taste food that are sweet, salty or sour.
Your nose and taste buds work together. So, if you eat a pizza, your nose tells your brain you can smell a
pizza, and your taste buds tell your brain
you can taste a pizza.

The five senses – Hearing
We hear with our ears. The sounds we hear enter our ears.
