and skin, or to provide access for
viewing it.

Caesarean Section (C-Section)
A Caesarean Section or C-section is a type of surgical delivery of a baby. It is
done by creating an incision in the mother’s abdomen and another in the
rd
uterus. It is a common procedure, and is done about 1/3 of the time. Caesarean
th
deliveries are usually performed only if necessary and avoided before the 39
week of gestation.

Sometimes, complications
arise and an emergency
Caesarean delivery is ordered
before 39 weeks

Normal Delivery
A normal delivery refers to a “normal birth”, it is a natural process which
does not require medical of technological treatment. Deliveries requiring
induction, acceleration, medical pain medicine (i.e. epidurals), forceps
ventouse, a C-section, or episiotomy would not fall under this criteria.

A normal delivery is also

understood to be defined as
giving birth via the vagina
without the aid of a doctor.

Cutting & Dissecting (CD)

Surgical instruments that have sharp edges and tips to cut or dissect skin, soft tissue,
and bone. Some, like scalpels and blades, are disposable, while others, such as knives,
are reusable. Blade types vary by specialty, some are used for vascular, skin, and even
bone.

Clamping & Occluding (CO)

Surgical instruments that are used to clamp blood vessels or other structures
to control bleeding or create a bloodless field during surgery. Hemostats and
vascular clamps are examples of clamping instruments.

Retracting & Exposing (RE)

Surgical instruments used to hold back, or retract organs and tissue to provide access
and visualization to the surgical field. Retractors are mainly self-retaining and are used
on skin, bone, and tissue. The hook design of most will enable retraction without
damaging the tissue.

Grasping & Holding (GH)

Surgical instruments that are used to hold and grasp onto tissue or blood vessels that
may be in the way during a surgical procedure. The most common surgical instruments
for this purpose include forceps, tenaculum, and bone holders.

Dilation & Curretage Instruments (DLC)

Surgical instruments that are used to expand and scrape off any excess or obstruction
during an operation. Dilators range from small to large and are commonly used to
expand the size of an orifice such as the cervix or urethra. Curettage instruments are
shaped like spoons and are used to scrape or remove tissue and debris from cavities,
bone, and other surfaces.

Delivery
Instruments
Delivery instruments are surgical instruments used
during childbirth to assist in the safe delivery of the
baby, especially when complications arise. These
instruments help guide the baby out of the birth canal
when maternal pushing is insufficient or when urgent
delivery is required.
A surgical scissor designed for cutting
through thinner body tissues and
areas close to the open wound. They
are also used for suture cutting.
Used to cut through thick tissue, such
as in the muscles, breast, foot, and
uterus.
Surgical scissors used to cut bandages and
facilitate episiostomy. The angled and blunt
tip helps in penetrating only bandages or
chosen area, without damaging the
surrounding.
Surgical scirror designed to cut the
umbilical cord following birth. They are
hand-held with thin, broad, curved, and
blunt tips to help in slicing the cord.
Hemostatic forceps used for clamping
large blood vessels (BV) or
manipulating heavy tissue. They are
also used for soft tissue dissection,
clamp, heat sink, or third hand.
Surgical instruments used to control blood
flow during various medical procedures. They
come in various types, straight for large BV,
curved for deep BV, long for deep surgical
sites, and small for delicate and confined BV
Used to remove placental fragments inside
the uterus. It may also be used as a
hemostat to prevent blood flow from an
open blood vessel. They can also
manipulate the ovarian tissues.
A surgical instrument, also called a
needle driver, similar to the artery
forcep, used to hold a suturing needle
for closing wounds.
Hemostatic forceps designed for
controlling bleeding and handling
blood vessels during surgery.
Tool that doctors use during pelvic
exams. Made of metal or plastic, it’s
hinged and shaped like a duck’s bill, and
is used to open the wallx of the vagina to
examine it and the cervix.
Surgical instrument that has two
blades that are used to examine the
vagina and the cervix. It can either be
steel or plastic.
Surgical instrument with sharp teeth
used to hold or grasp heaving tissue. It
can also be used to grasp fascia, such
as breast or bowel tissues.
Instruments used to hold sterile
towels as close to the incision sight as
possible. They also fix suction tubes,
diathermy wires, and laparoscopic
cables.
Forceps used to grip and hold sponges and
swabs throughout surgery and exams.
Forceps for sponges enable surgeons and
doctors to position and hold dressings
securely in the right place.
Used to manage tissue and other materials
and manipulate needles and other instruments
when performing. These used to handle tissues
and other materials and control needles and
other devices.
Protect medical instruments in a variety of
ways. They can hold instruments while
sterilizing in an autoclave, protecting them
from damage. Trays help transport medical
equipment from one place to the next.
Can be described as a kidney-shaped basin
commonly used during surgical procedures
to transport dressings, bandages, small
instruments, soiled dressings, and various
other waste from medical procedures.
Several spent sponges and gauze are held and
managed during treatment using the Grafco
Iodine Cup. Serving as the container for sterile
fluid storage during a procedure until it is
appropriately disposed of.
A curette is a surgical tool used to scrape or
remove biological tissue or debris during
procedures such as biopsies, excisions, or
wound cleaning. Sharp curettes are used in
gynecology and blunt in pregnancy check.
A hysterometer is an instrument used to
measure the depth of the uterus, aiding in
the prevention of uterine perforation. Its
polyethylene cursor allows for precise and
easy depth reading.
This instrument secures and steadies the
cervix and uterus, enabling accurate IUD or
sound insertion, while also correcting cervical
canal irregularities and straightening uterine
curvatures or flexions during procedures.
