Heat and Mass Transfer
Tutorial Sheet No.2
1. A brick wall is exposed on one side to a heat flux of 2250 W/m 2. The wall is 12 cm thick and has an average
value of thermal conductivity of 0.3 W/Mk.
a) Determine the temperature drop in the wall under steady state conditions.
b) If the other side of the wall is exposed to convection to air at 30 0C with a convection coefficient of 75
W/m2K, determine the wall surface temperatures.
c) If the other side is exposed to radiation to surroundings at 30 0C, determine the wall surface
temperatures.
2. A hollow cylinder has its inside maintained by an evaporating fluid at -40 0C. The inside radius is 6 cm and the
wall thickness is 2 cm. The wall material has a thermal conductivity of 0.1 W/m K. The heat gain per m length
due to the evaporating liquid is 65.5.W/m length.
a) Determine the outside temperature.
b) If the heat gain remains same and if heat is entering the outside wall by convection from air at 25 0C,
determine the value of the convection coefficient.
c) If the heat gain is only by radiation, determine the surrounding temperature.
3. A person sits in a room with surrounding air at 26 0C and convection coefficient over the body surface is
6 W/m2K. The walls in the room are at 5 0C as the outside temperature is below freezing. If the body
temperature is 37 0C, determine the heat losses by convection and radiation. Consider a surface area of 0.6 m2.
4. Air at 120 0C flows over a plate 20 mm thick and the temperatures in the middle 10 mm layer of the plate was
measured using thermo couples and were found to be 42 0C and 30 0C. The thermal conductivity of the
material is known to be 22.5 W/m-K. Determine the average convection coefficient over the plate.
5. A glass plate at 40 0C is heated by passing hot air over it with a convection coefficient of 18 W/m 2K. If the
temperature change over 1 mm thickness is not to exceed 5 0C to avoid distortion damage, determine the
maximum allowable temperature of the air. Thermal conductivity of the plate is 1.4 W/m-K.
6. A furnace wall is of three layers, first layer of insulation brick of 12 cm thickness of conductivity 0.6 W/m-K.
The face exposed to gases at 870 0C with a convection coefficient of 110 W/m 2K. This layer is backed by a 10
cm layer of fire brick of conductivity of 0.8 W/m-K. The third layer is the plate backing of 10 cm thickness of
conductivity 49 W/m-K. The third plate is exposed to air at 30 0C with a convection coefficient of 15 W/m 2K.
Determine the heat flow, the surface temperatures and the overall heat transfer coefficient.
