Adobe ID
The Acrobat XI Pro application includes the “AdobeID” concept. A serialized installation shows
the Adobe ID is optional. Otherwise, Acrobat requires an AdobeID.

Activation
Acrobat XI provides a 30 day grace period until activation is required. It might happen that the
user couldn't activate in these 30 days (if the user is not connected to the internet). From the 16th
day onward the user will be reminded on each launch that the machine needs to be connected to

3
the internet for the product to be activated. After 30 days, the user will get a hard-prompt saying
that the user should activate now (the machine must be connected to the internet to do this). After
30 days, the machine must be successfully activated before the user can continue to use the
product.

Flash is now required to view SWF and Portfolio Content in PDFs

Acrobat and Reader no longer include Flash Player. The Flash Player is needed in order for
Acrobat and Reader to display SWF and Portfolio content in PDF’s. If your system does not
have Flash Player and you want to display SWF and Portfolio content contained in PDF’s you
will need to download and install the Flash Player for your system.

If you open a PDF that requires Flash, a dialog prompts you to download and install the latest
Flash player. To preinstall Flash, go here:

Acrobat Installation Notes

PDF File Extension and Registry
Please note the most recently installed application version will “own” the Acrobat or Reader
registry entries and the .PDF file extension.

Before Installing
Before installing Acrobat or Reader please see the known issues sections below titled
Deployment/Installation and Deployment Customization to see if any of those situations apply.

Forms Central and Installation

Before installing you may need to delete the following folders:

Windows:
<user>\AppData\Roaming\com.adobe.formscentral.FormsCentralForAcrobatPreRelease<x>

Mac: ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.formscentral.FormsCentralForAcrobatPreRelease<x>

Windows Acrobat Installation and Uninstallation

• Close all other applications.
• Important: You must uninstall any previous prerelease build of Acrobat XI before
installing the GM build.

4
• For users installing Acrobat on a 64 bit machine via MSI on command line, they
should specify public property “IGNOREVC10RT=1” in order to continue
installation if VC10 Runtime is not found on the machine, else installation will abort.
In UI mode, a message box will be shown asking user to continue or abort the
installation in case VCRT is not found. If installation is done via setup.exe,
installation will never abort as it passes this property always while spawning Acrobat
MSI.
• If you are not installing via MSI, then follow the instructions below for a UI-based
install.
• Double click on setup.exe to begin the installation.
• Select the language in the Language Selection dialogue and click “OK”.
• Click “Next” on the Adobe Acrobat XI Pro Setup screen.
• The installer computes disc space requirements and checks for previous versions. If a
previous version of Acrobat Pro is found, such as Acrobat X Pro, press Continue to
uninstall it.
• The License Screen will display – input your serial number or install in Trial
Mode. NOTE: If you purchased a subscription option, you will be directed to the
Trial Mode installation workflow.
• Choose your installation level (default is Typical) and click “Next”.
• Change the Installation Directory (if desired), else the default directory is visible;
click “Next”.
• Click “Install”; installation now proceeds.
• If there are processes running that conflict with the installation, the installer will
prompt you to stop these processes before you can continue the installation. Close the
processes and then click in the installer to continue the installation.
• The last dialogue is “Setup Completed”; click “Finish”. Acrobat can now be
launched.

First Launch and Adobe ID Entry Instructions

• On application launch, accept the EULA. If a blank EULA screen appears (Mac
only), see the section Blank EULA Screen above.
• If you did not enter a serial number during installation, the Sign In Required screen
appears. On the Sign In Required screen select “Sign in now”. On the Sign In screen,
enter the Adobe ID credentials. Please create your Adobe ID if you don’t have one.
Click “Sign In”. Acrobat should now be usable.
• If you did enter a serial number during installation, the Register screen appears. On
the Register screen enter the Adobe ID credentials. Please create your new Adobe ID
if you don’t have one. Click “Sign In”. Acrobat should now be usable.

5
Application User Interface Language
During installation you select the language you want installed. Please be sure to select the
language that you purchased. If you encounter a language mis-match, uninstall Acrobat and
reinstall for the language that you purchased. The English user interface is included and you can
switch to English if desired by using Edit > Preferences > Language. Once you change the
language you must exit and re-launch Acrobat for the preference to take effect. If your licensing
allows all languages you can add or remove languages by following these steps:

• Use “Add or Remove Programs” Control Panel (XP) or the “Programs and Features”
Control Panel (Windows 7).
• Select Acrobat XI Pro and select “Change”.
• Select “Modify” and add or remove languages.

To uninstall Acrobat
• Before uninstalling the build, please deactivate. To do this choose Help > Deactivate.
• Then, uninstall the application through the “Add or Remove Programs” Control Panel
(XP) or the Programs and Features Control Panel (Windows 7).
• After uninstallation completes, please reboot your machine.

Macintosh Acrobat Installation and Uninstallation

Use the following instructions to install software or to upgrade from a previous version. If you
purchased Acrobat as a download, Adobe recommends that you back up your download package,
preferably to a DVD.

To install and start Acrobat XI in Mac OS

1. Connect the machine to the Internet.

2. Start the installation:

• If you purchased Acrobat on a DVD, insert the DVD in the DVD drive to view the
application files.
• If you purchased Acrobat as a download, double-click the DMG file to mount the image
file as a volume.

3. Double-click the Adobe Acrobat XI Pro installer package (.pkg) to begin installation. Click
“Continue”.

4. The next screen shows this Read Me file. Click “Continue”.

5. The License Screen displays and requests you to enter your serial number. If you are using the
product in Trial mode or have purchased a subscription you do not need to enter a serial number.
If you will be entering a serial number, be sure the machine is connected to the internet since on-

6
line serial number validation will be done. Note: Installing in Trial mode allows you to use the
software for the Trial period of 30 days from first launch.

6. Enter the serial number for your copy of the program. The serial number of individually
licensed purchases is located on the outside of the DVD case, or on the receipt page for ESD
(electronic software delivery) purchases made through the Adobe Store. You can also locate the
serial number for individually licensed ESD purchases in your online order history at
http://www.adobe.com. The serial number for purchases made through the Adobe Licensing
Website is available in your record at http://licensing.adobe.com.

7. The next screen is the “Installation Type” screen. You can select or deselect the product
components you wish to install and you can also change the installation path. Click “Install”
when ready.

8. When prompted, enter your administrative credentials for the installation to proceed.

9. Once installation is finished, click “Finish”.

10. By default Acrobat is installed in “/Applications/Adobe Acrobat XI Pro” directory. Go to this

directory and launch Acrobat. After Acrobat launches accept the end user license agreement.

11. If you entered a serial number during installation, please see step 12 below. If you are using
Acrobat in Trial mode or for a subscription (Pro only), the Sign In Required screen appears. On
the Sign In Required screen select “Sign in now”. On the Sign In screen, enter your Adobe ID
credentials. If you don’t have an Adobe ID click on “Create an Adobe ID”, provide the details as
asked. Then, click on Create. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the creation
process. Click “Sign In”. Acrobat should now be usable.

12. If you entered a serial number during installation, the Register screen appears. On the
Register screen enter your Adobe ID credentials. If you don’t have an Adobe ID click on “Create
an Adobe ID”, provide the details as asked. Then, click on Create. Follow the instructions on the
screen to complete the Adobe ID creation and registration process. You can optionally press
“Skip”. IMPORTANT: You must be connected to the internet to activate your copy of the
software. Activating your copy is required within 30 days. After 30 days the software will stop
working.

Blank EULA Screen

Problem: Mac only. On launch, a blank EULA screen appears, cannot be accepted, and Acrobat
does not run. Workaround: Exit Acrobat. This problem may appear if you have a Creative Suite
(CS) 6 application or a Creative Cloud subscription product installed. The workaround is to
deactivate the CS application or subscription via Help > Deactivate menu. Then, launch Acrobat
and accept the EULA. Then, for the CS application, launch it and reactivate it. For a
subscription product, launch it and select “License this software” to enable the CCM product
again. [3338419]

7
To uninstall Acrobat XI in Mac OS®

1. In Application > Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, double-click the Acrobat XI Uninstaller.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall Acrobat.

3. When prompted, enter your administrative credentials for the un-installation to proceed.

Note: The uninstaller removes only Adobe Acrobat XI files from the system. It does not remove
Adobe Reader files, Acrobat user data, or files that are shared with other Adobe applications.

4. (Optional) Move any Adobe PDF Settings files that you created from the Library/Application
Support/Adobe PDF folder and drag the folder to the Trash.

Known Issues
3D
Problem: On the Mac with Safari 5.1.5 3D renderings may show tessellation because OpenGL
1.4 is not being used. [3170393]

Accessibility
Problem: When you start Acrobat XI for the first time with screen readers running, focus
does not land in the EULA immediately. Workaround: Press Tab a couple of times and you
do eventually get to the EULA buttons.[2704224]

Problem: Buttons in the EULA, Deactivation and Registration dialogues do not respond to
pressing the Return Key. Workaround: Press the Space bar or use the mouse. [3144180,
3327992]

Problem: JAWS unable to read PDF in Reader and Acrobat Protected mode in Firefox 4.
[2866957] Workaround: Turn off Protected Mode.

Problem: Internet Explorer: JAWS unable to read PDF in Protected Mode unless the
document is re-loaded in the browser window. Another workaround would be to turn off
Protected Mode. [2747010]

Actions
Problem: Actions cannot be installed to user (app data) location via the Customization Wizard.
In the current Actions implementation, Actions (seq files) are located in two locations:
- install directory - default Acrobat pre-canned actions
- user (app data) directory - user's actions in user's directory
Customization Wizard does not allow to install into <user appdata>. [3124488]

8
Browser
Problem: A gray/blank screen displays after choosing "Trust this host one time only" or "Trust
this host always" in the browser. This happens with IE, Firefox, and Chrome. Workaround: Turn
off Protected View (Preferences > Security (Enhanced) > All files). [3329058]

Problem: IE gets into an unresponsive state and "Publish/delete comments" dialog does not come
up when user navigates to another URL with unpublished comments in a shared review PDF.
Steps:
1) Open a review pdf in IE with Sandbox Reader having ownership
2) Accept the welcome dialog and add an annotation to this file
3) Do not click publish comments and navigate to www.google.com and observe

Result: IE gets into unresponsive state and "Publish/delete comments" dialog does not come up.
Workaround: It works fine if user closes the browser on step 3 instead of navigating to another
url. Run the Reader in non-sandbox mode and it works fine. [2741044]

Problem: PDF Content Expands Beyond the Width of HTML Area. Workaround: Place the PDF
in absolute pixels - no padding style. [3052060]

Citrix
Problem: CITRIX: Reader cannot be launched in Sandbox Mode when Reader is opened
through Citrix application streaming in isolation. [2810983]

Problem: Failing to login from Acrobat 11 on Office 365 Server when "Keep me signed in" is
unchecked. This happens with Internet Explorer also. Workaround: You can log in if “Keep me
signed in” is checked. [3316458]

Cloud Integration
Problem: The Acrobat.com sign-in window does not work properly with IE7. The solution is to
upgrade to IE8.

Problem: On XP and possibly other operating systems, the Acrobat.com window may not
completely draw and no files are listed. Workaround: The problem goes away if the user quits
and re-launches the application. The problem may be limited to Reader only with IE 8.

Problem: On Windows XP you cannot login to Office 365 from Acrobat if you are also not
logged in from Internet Explorer. [3293185]

Problem: Macintosh only. When using acrobat.com on the Mac the minimum Safari browser
used must be Safari 5.1.
Problem: Macintosh only. If third party plug-ins are installed, such as PitStop 11, Acrobat may
crash when saving files to Acrobat.com. [3332839]

9
Commenting
Problem: Using CTRL-A to select all comments in a large PDF containing many comments may
appear to hang Acrobat. [1700615]

Deployment/Installation
Problem: When you install or launch Acrobat the dialog No Internet Connection may appear.
Select Offline Activation and follow the steps to generate a request code to complete offline
activation.

Problem: If you purchased an Acrobat XI Pro Upgrade and you want to upgrade to Acrobat XI
Pro from Creative Suite 6 and Creative Suite 6 is already present on the system, Acrobat XI Pro
fails to detect it. Upon launch Acrobat XI Pro asks for the qualifying product and the product’s
serial number. You need to select Acrobat X Pro as the qualifying product and then enter the
Creative Suite 6 serial number. [3324657]

Problem: Mac Installer will fail to install if the boot volume is case sensitive.
Workaround: install on a non-case sensitive volume [2594334]

Problem: This is a Windows only problem. "Unable to find PDFMaker resource files" error
shows up for Microsoft Word when Acrobat XI is installed with Acrobat X Standard already on
the same machine. If the user repairs or even uninstalls Acrobat XI, then the same error shows up
for Acrobat X Standard also. The user must repair Acrobat X Standard in order for PDFMaker to
work with it again. [3327895]

Problem: Acrobat and Reader do not successfully install if the destination path contains
double-byte or special characters. The problem only occurs when installing at a path that
is in a different code page than the host OS. [2730985]

Problem: Error message on Windows 7 English when installing Acrobat from a localized user
account containing double-byte or four-byte characters. [3181588]

Problem: Windows only. If Acrobat is installed in French in trial mode and later a North African
French serial number is used to serialize it then the product gets activated successfully. The same
goes for Arabic OS and Hebrew serial number and vice versa. [3298879]

Problem: Windows only. If both Acrobat and pDistiller exist on the machine and pDistiller is
uninstalled, then PDFMaker stops working. The uninstallation of pDistiller removes the Adobe
PDF printer from the machine. When you click on the Create PDF tab in MS office, it presents a
message box saying that Acrobat PDFmaker could not be loaded. Workaround: Doing an
installation repair of Acrobat fixes the situation and PDF’s can now be created using PDFMaker.
[3311656, 3311703]

Problem: Windows only. User is unable to access the French (Morocco) when installed on an
Arabic Windows XP computer with Arabic Morocco regional settings. This does not happen

10
when Acrobat XI Pro is installed on an English Windows XP computer. This does not happen
when Acrobat XI Pro is installed on an Arabic Windows 7 computer. Steps:
1- Set the regional settings of your Arabic Windows XP computer to Arabic Morocco.
2- Launch Acrobat XI Pro install and scroll down to select French (Morocco) as the language of
your installation.
3- Launch Acrobat XI Pro once the installation is finished > click to display the list of available
Acrobat UI languages.
4- Exit Acrobat > change the regional settings of your Arabic Windows XP computer to French
France.
5- Hold the Ctrl key and double click on the Acrobat XI shortcut on your desktop > click to
display the list of available Acrobat UI languages.
Result: French (Morocco) is unavailable/dimmed. [3291828]

Licensing Note: Windows only. Please note that French, North African French, and Canadian
French are treated the same for licensing purposes. This also applies to U. S. English, British
English, and International English. [3295506]

File Type ProgIDs: The Progid for file types is changed for Acrobat and Reader XI. Please see
the table below for an example of how this has changed.

Acrobat Reader

A10 A11 R10 R11

Deployment Customization
Problem: An enterprise may not want users to have to activate their copy of Acrobat or to enter
the Adobe ID. A related situation is where the machine is not connected to the internet. To turn
off Activation and the Adobe ID before installing Acrobat use the customization wizard.

Problem: Reader only: PM registry key (HKLM/HKCU in order) should be checked before
creation of HKLM/HKCU PV key. Currently, registry key for enabling Protected View can be
created and also comes into effect even though Protected Mode is OFF through registry. In
Reader X: Protected Mode – OFF and Protected View – ON is an unsupported configuration and
can lead to unexpected results if exposed by locked down keys in enterprise installations
generally. Steps:
1. Install Reader XI.
2. Launch Reader and accept Eula and then close Reader.

11
3. Turn OFF Protected Mode of Reader by creating a registry key at:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\Privileged] dword =
'bProtectedMode' and set it to '0'
4. Turn ON Protected View of Reader by creating a registry key at :
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat
Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown] dword = 'iProtectedView' and set it to '1'
5. Launch Reader and click Edit>Preferences>Security(Enhanced)
6. Notice Sandbox Protections section.

Result: Enable Protected Mode at startup checkbox is OFF but Protected View is set to 'Files
from potentially unsafe location'

Note:
Protected Mode and Protected can be controlled both through HKLM amd HKCU.
Below are four configurations in which Protected View ON should not be allowed:

a) PM (OFF) - [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\Privileged]

dword = 'bProtectedMode' and set it to '0'
PV (ON) - [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat
Reader\11.0\TrustManager] dword = 'iProtectedView' and set it to '1'

b) PM (OFF) - [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\Privileged]

dword = 'bProtectedMode' and set it to '0'
PV (ON) - [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat
Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown] dword = 'iProtectedView' and set it to '1'

c) PM (OFF) - [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat
Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown] dword = 'bProtectedMode' and set it to '0'
PV (ON) - [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat
Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown] dword = 'iProtectedView' and set it to '1'

d) PM (OFF) - [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat
Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown] dword = 'bProtectedMode' and set it to '0'
PV (ON) - [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\TrustManager]
dword = 'iProtectedView' and set it to '1' [3320478]

Problem: ERROR 16 appears when a GPO policy doesn't give Everyone group Write
permissions to a folder under Program Files. [3003032]

Problem: If you have an authenticating proxy on the system, there is no way to provide the user
name and password through the APTEE provisioning tool and it fails to validate the serial
number. Workaround: Use an offline exception. [3158635]

Problem: DISABLE_DESKTOPSHORTCUT_AAM=1 is not working correctly. It is also

removing the Programs menu shortcut for AAM apart from removing the desktop shortcut. In
Acrobat X, DISABLEDESKTOPSHORTCUT=1 disables only the desktop shortcut. In Acrobat

12
XI, DISABLEDESKTOPSHORTCUT now supports the following values in order to also disable
desktop shortcuts for Forms Central and Adobe Application Manager (AAM)

1 = Disable all shortcuts

2 = no acrobat shortcut
4 = no AAM shortcut
8 = no Forms Central shortcut [3302351]

Problem: Reader 11 takes ownership even when LEAVE_PDFOWNERSHIP=YES is provided

on command line. System already has Acrobat X and Windows Reader.
LEAVE_PDFOWNERSHIP works fine for siblings of the same versions, but it does not work
across versions. [3314563]

Digital Signatures
Problem: If a PDF contains two signatures and signature two contains three links in the chain
(signature #1 is from a self-signed cert), then, on the Mac, Acrobat and Reader report that the
end-entity (signer’s) certificate has an invalid signature, but on the Windows platform, the
invalid signature error is not reported. [3328208]

Enhanced Security and Internet Explorer 9

Problem: Unable to Add/Remove websites in Trusted Sites, Restricted Sites category in Internet
Options dialog from Acrobat's preferences. You cannot remove existing trusted sites or add a
new website to the existing list. Workaround: Make change to Internet Options from IE9's
settings dialog. (Tools->Internet Options) [3171074]

Fonts
Problem: Acrobat does not present an error message when the user attempts to use a restricted
font when converting a document to a PDF. Restricted fonts cannot be used in converting a
document to a PDF because they are not licensed for embedding within a PDF. Acrobat should
present an error message but instead Acrobat simply leaves the restricted fonts out of the PDF.
[3099192]

Help
Problem: Reader XI does not open off-line help contents when "Adobe Help" is installed

Steps:
1. Install Reader XI.
2. Install Adobe Community Help (CHC) from "http://www.adobe.com/support/chc/". (Adobe
AIR and Flash Player need to be installed first.)
3. Launch "Adobe Help" from Start->Programs menu.
4. Open "Preferences" dialog in CHC.
5. In "Download Preferences" pane, enable "Adobe Reader X" check-box.
6. Go to "Local Contents" pane (in CHC Preferences dialog) and Download/Update "Using
Adobe Reader X".

7. Close CHC.
8. Disconnect the Internet.
9. Launch Reader XI and select "Help"-->"Adobe Reader XI Help..." menu.

Reader should now open the Off-Line Help content in the default browser on clicking Help"--
>"Adobe Reader XI Help..." menu when the system has no network connectivity. [3300851]
Problem: The browser hangs (arh.exe is blocked when Protected Mode in Internet Explorer is
ON) when you open Acrobat / Reader help from Acrobat’s Document Message Bar.
Workaround: Instead of selecting Allow, select Don’t Allow. Another work around is to turn off
Internet Explorer Protected Mode. [3317076]

iFilter
Problem: Not able to search the contents of PDFs attached in Portfolio files files using Windows
Desktop Search 4. Workaround: Set
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\Gathering
Manager\UseSystemTemp to 1 (by default it is 0). [2663975]

JavaScript
Problem: When executing the viewState script on doc:Ready, the panes are not hidden when
initially opened in the browser plug-in. For example,
form1::docReady - (JavaScript, client)
//Close all panes
event.target.viewState = {overViewMode:5};
This script on the doc:Ready works fine in Reader 9 plug-in when opening it in IE 8.0.
Workaround: Use a script from a button click event instead. [3065905]

Problem: The Javascript console doesn't accept shift-return on Mac laptops. Instead of shift-
return use Cmd+Enter [3115363]

LiveCycle
Problem: HTTP 404 Error appears after adding a LiveCycle / LC ES / ES2 Workspace as
a privileged location for PDFs making X domain calls and the server is not yet trusted.
Workaround: go back to the workflow forms list in the UI and reopen the
form. [2631101]

LiveCycle Designer
LiveCycle Designer is no longer included in Acrobat XI Pro Windows.

Live Cycle Forms, Live Cycle Workspace and Protected View

Problem: XFA Forms and LC workspace are not supported in Protected View ON mode of
Acrobat / Reader 11.0.

Description: On Opening an XFA Form with Protected View on for Acrobat / Reader 11.0, a
yellow bar is thrown and a blank PDF appears instead of the actual form.

14
The form can only be viewed by temporarily switching out of Protected View mode by using the
trust once feature or by trusting the form permanently or by otherwise switching off Protected
View mode permanently.

Also note that in LiveCycle Workspace, on opening any workflow, first a blank page appears
with a Protected View Yellow bar. Also LiveCycle pushes a Complete button at the same time.
This button is not disabled and the user could not see the actual form but can still submit the
workflow. [3316200]

Multimedia
Problem: When you open a multimedia PDF containing multiple layers, clicking on the PDF
itself and not on the Play button may cause unexpected results. [2732342]

PDF Creation from Web Page

Problem: Characters in Plain Text format are displayed as corrupted text in PDF when
converting PDF from .txt file on Macintosh. Workaround: Step 1. Select File > Create > PDF
from web page > Settings > General tab Step 2. Select File Type as Text and press the Setting
button. Step 3. Select default encoding as UTF 8. [3163861]

PDFMaker for AutoCAD

Problem: Trying to convert ACAD 2013 files to PDF by A11, an error occurs stating ' An
unexpected error occurred. PDFMaker was unable to produce Adobe PDF'. Workaround:
Open the DWG file in AutoCAD 2013 and change its file format to an older version (AutoCAD
2010/2011/2012). [3163139]

PDFMaker in 64 Bit Office

Acrobat XI needs “Visual C++ 2010 SP1 (x64) Runtime” (VCRT) as a pre-requisite for running
PDF Maker in 64-Bit MS Office. If it does not find it installed on the OS, it tries to install it
before Acrobat installation. If Visual C++ 2010 SP1 (x64) Runtime installation fails for any
reason, the user is recommended to install it manually in order to run PDFMaker. The Acrobat
installer carries VCRT with it; it is found in folder VC10RT_x64 inside the Acrobat package.
The user is recommended to install VCRT manually using either method described below:

a. Double click on vc_red.msi file kept in folder VC10RT_x64 in Acrobat package.

b. Download and install it from the following location:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=13523

If an error is displayed the error code mentioned determines the cause of failure. For the detailed
meaning of the error see:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms681382(v=vs.85).aspx [3159486]

PDF Maker for Office

Problem: Right edge binding is not retained in the PDF. Steps:

15
1. Launch Word 2007 and open the bug file in bug folder.
2. Select Acrobat->Create Adobe PDF->Preferences, then click 'Advanced Settings' menu.
3. Change the binding option from 'Left' to 'Right', then save this joboptions as
'Standard(1).joboptions'.
4. Convert the file to PDF by using the job options file created in step 3.
5. Open the PDF created, then go to File->Properties and select tab 'Advanced'.
6. Observe the Binding option is displayed as 'Left Edge'.
Workaround: Change the binding from Document Properties > Advanced. [2657332]

PDF Ownership
Problem: Reader Only: "Select Default PDF Handler" should be disabled when Reader Protected
Mode is OFF on Windows 8 64-bit. Steps:
1. Install Reader on Win8 64-bit
2. Launch Reader and turn off PM (Preferences > Security (Enhanced) >
3. Exit Reader
4. Launch IE10 and open any PDF -
http://acrobatqe.corp.adobe.com/browsertestsuite/Test_Files/quickie/SONNETS.pdf
5. Ctrl + K > General

Result: "Select Default PDF Handler" is not disabled as it is in Acrobat. [3313895]

Problem: Ownership is not restored when ownership is transferred to Reader XI and Reader
XI is then un-installed. Workaround: repair Acrobat [3325450]

PDF Printing
Problem: Printing a PDF using Booklet Printing may produce inconsistent and incorrect results
depending on the printer used. Some printers where the problem may be seen are the HP 4700
and HP 2840 All-In-One. [2782167, 2390174]

Problem: Windows 7 only. For redirected PS printers, Acrobat always displays "Working RGB"
color profile. For color PostScript printers it should display the working CMYK profile. For
monochrome PostScript printers it should display the working Grayscale profile. Steps:
1. Install a PostScript color and a monochrome printer on Windows XP.
2. Now from this machine, use Mstsc.exe to remote desktop to a Windows 7 machine
3. Open any PDF file on the Windows 7 machine.
4. Ctrl-P--> Choose any "redirected printer"-->Advanced
5. See what is displayed in "Color Space". It displays “Working RGB”. [2683045]

Problem: Windows only. Using “Choose paper source” AND “Use custom paper size when
needed” may cause page contents to print at 1/10th or 1/20th of the original size for Xerox
drivers. Steps:
1. Open a 17x11 Landscape.pdf.
2. Select a printer.
3. Check both “Choose paper source” and “Use custom paper size when needed.”

16
4. This problem only reproduces if both “Choose paper source” and “Use custom paper size
when needed” are on.
5. Print and view result. The page contents shrink to 1/10 or 1/20 of the expected size and are
printed in the upper left. Expected: The page contents should print onto full media size. General
print preview displays media size and informs user the page will be printed onto full media size.
[2392553]

PDF Printer
Problem: The Adobe PDF printer’s custom page size limit is about 600 dpi. At resolutions
beyond this, such as 1200 dpi, printing may result in a printer error and no document will be
printed. [2684339]

Problem: PDF Printer(Distiller) may not appear to work with PPT files on Win XP 64 bit. For
Windows XP Service Pack 2 for 64 bit and Windows Server 2003 R2 (64 bit) Microsoft Hot Fix
KB-930627 is required. [3329063] See:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930627

Portfolios
Problem: Acrobat/Reader displays garbage characters (source codes) when previewing
web content html with URL that redirects to a PDF on the web server [2711118]

Problem: Portfolio signature buttons are inactive. Portfolios can only be signed on the cover
sheet. Yet, signature buttons in the toolbar and the right hand panel are active when viewing any
file in the portfolio, and in all views. Clicking on the signature buttons anywhere except for the
cover page has no result, and they are then grayed out. [3319649]

Protected Mode in Reader

Problem: The generated system report shows Sandboxing as "OFF" when Protected Mode is
actually ON and "ON" when Protected Mode is actually OFF. To generate the system report
from the main menu select Help -> Online Support -> Generate System Report. [3324650]

Problem: The browser hangs when open Acrobat / Reader help from Document Message Bar,
because arh.exe is blocked when Protected Mode in Internet Explorer is on. Workaround:
Disable Protected Mode in browser or use Don't Allow option at prompt [3317076]

Right To Left Text and Editing

Problem: When any editing operation is performed in an RTL text block , there is a horizontal
displacement in the text. This creates the following issues:
1. Copy Paste - when the displacement is large, the highlighted character is not copied and hence
the pasted text is different.
2. Find Replace - The highlighted string is not appropriately replaced leading to some
highlighted characters left behind and some non-highlighted ones getting replaced.
3. Manually highlight the text and Replace - same as 2.

17
4. Incorrect highlighting when the entire text is selected. (Ctrl+A). Selection goes beyond the
text block and sometimes less than expected.
Workaround: If the textbox is resized slightly, all the above specified issues function well.
[3299560]

Problem: When pasting a mixed English/Arabic string containing numeric data, the position of
the numeric data is flipped to the right from their original position. The problem happens when
Right to Left is selected for Main Paragraph Direction in Content Editing Preferences and the
user selects Tools > Content Editing > Add Text. [3137086]

Problem: Text copied from non-tagged PDFs is pasted incorrectly into Word, Excel, Photoshop,
TextEdit, NotePad and PDF text boxes. The word order is altered when the text contains mixed
Hebrew and English, when the text includes tables, or when the text includes symbols. This is an
expected behavior when the source and the destination document have different text writing
directions. The problem happens because the paragraph text direction of the PDF is Right-to-Left
and the Notepad paragraph direction is Left-to-Right. Workaround for Notepad: The default text
direction of the PDF file can be changed in File > Properties... > Advanced tab > Reading
Options > Binding. Change it to RightEdge, save, close, and re-open the document. [3143432]

Problem: For Hebrew, when diacritics are added to text, they are offset to the left, appearing in
between letters instead of beneath them. [3170312]

Save As PDF as .DOC

Problem: In some cases SaveAs performs OCR. The OCR, however, may identify some of the
visible text as Bates text and create images for it thus causing the SaveAs to .DOC to be
incomplete. Workaround: A workaround is to turn off the use of OCR. [2729486]

Save As Word
Problem: Save as Word Document does not properly generate word output from Hebrew text in
PDF files. [2838335]

Scanning
Problem: When using an Automatic Document Feeder with an ICA compact window, scanning
fails. The ICA dialog quits and all the opened documents also close. The issue was seen with
scanners such as HP Officejet 8500 and Canon MX 868. Occurs on Mac OS X 10.7.4.
Workaround: When the ICA loads this window for the first scan initiated using the scanner, the
user should switch to the detailed ICA window which avoids the problem. Another workaround
to overcome the issue is: click on “Show Details” button in the ICA dialog to launch the detailed
window and scan specifying the desired settings. [3169060]

Sendmail – Outlook 2003

Problem: This is a Reader problem only. When Protected Mode is on, Outlook 2003 does not
launch the draft email window. Workaround: Turn off Protected Mode. [3323494]

18
Shared Review
Problem: You cannot initiate a shared review on a shared review PDF. [1779748]

Spelling
Problem: The spelling suggestions shown may be different than in previous releases. While
Acrobat XI provides a new spelling plug-in, the spelling suggestions provided may be fewer in
number or may include suggestions that don’t fit. [3195192]

Problem: When Acrobat is launched in either "English with Hebrew support" or "English with
Arabic support" application language, if a user unchecks the default dictionary (i.e. Hebrew or
Arabic) and checks another dictionary language, the selection will be reset after Acrobat is re-
launched. Workaround: Do not uncheck the default dictionary on the spelling preferences. Just
select and check the other dictionary in addition. This way the selection will be sticky after re-
launched. [3306998]

Subscriptions
Problem: The Acrobat XI Pro English user interface is installed on Slovak and Slovenian
operating systems even though a Slovenian or Slovak subscription was purchased. Workaround:
Go to Add/Remove programs and add the languages desired. [3329552]

Third Party Plug-ins

Acrobat and Reader XI may not be compatible with third party plug-ins. You may see symptoms
such as: "Close Application: AcroRd32.exe". Please contact the maker of the third party plug-in
for a later release of the plug-in. [2873298]

Uninstallation
Problem: If you have Microsoft Word running and you try to uninstall Acrobat, a Files in Use
error message is shown. If you click, Retry, the Files in Use error message is shown again.
Workaround: Either close Microsoft Word first before uninstalling Acrobat or apply this hotfix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2649868/en-US [2721515]

Problem: This is a Mac only problem. The Library path described in the ReadMe file regarding
optional files to move for a more complete uninstall of Acrobat is inaccurate. The statement
should be: 4. (Optional) Move any Adobe PDF Settings files that you created from the
Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF folder and drag the folder to the Trash.
[3329844]

Web mail integration

Problem: For both Gmail and Yahoo mail:
a) While doing "File->Send File", even if the user signs-in with remember me checked in
Acrobat, the user may be asked to sign-in to the browser again depending upon whether the user
was signed-in to the browser or not.
b) If a proxy server is enabled which requires authentication, things will not work. Workaround:
Disable the proxy server.

19
c) If the user is signed in with one Yahoo-id or gmail-id in Acrobat and wants to use another
yahoo-id or gmail-id, the user will have to sign-out first and then initiate the workflow again and
sign-in with the other id. [3180720]

Problem: Gmail: The "File->Send File" experience is not optimal if the user is not already
signed-in to the browser. In this case, even though we are able to create a message in the drafts
folder, we take the user to the Inbox folder. Workaround: Sign-in to the browser before doing
"File->Send File"

Problem: YahooMail:
a) Yahoo - draft mail appears as sent mail in Classic mode. Workaround: Upgrade to a newer
version of Yahoo mail before initiating the workflow. [3180294]

Web mail using SMTP

Problem: Enterprises often block outgoing SMTP ports to guard against an accidentally
compromised machine acting as a Spam bot. Many webmail providers may then, on detecting the
Spam bots, blacklist the IP address. If the SMTP port is blocked, Acrobat webmail workflow
based on SMTP will not work.

Workaround: Ensure the SMTP port is unblocked. Enterprise support tools often explicitly
provide this functionality. See, for example:
