6 Money
Figure of Speech-
1. When I had money, money o!
Exclamation:- The poet expresses his strong emotion in the line.
Repetition:- The word ‘money’ has been repeated in the line

2. For many a false man as a friend came knocking all day at my door
Inversion:- The order of the words has been rearranged for poetic effect.
The correct order should be “for all day many a false man came knocking
at my door as a friend.

3. The felt I like a child that holds a trumpet


Inversion:- The order of the words has been rearranged for poetic effect.
The correct should be “Then I felt like a child that holds a trumpet.”

4. Much have I thought of life and seen


Inversion:- The order of the words has been rearranged for poetic effect.
The correct order should be “I have thought much of life and seen.

5. Hoe poor men’s hearts are ever light


Synecdoche:- The poor men’s ‘hearts’ (part) are not happy and content. It
is the poor men (whole) who are happy and content.

6. And how their wives do hum like bees


Onomatopoeia:- The sound creating word ‘hum’ is used in the line.

7. About their work from morn till night.


Antithesis:- Two opposite words ‘morn’ and ‘night’ have been used in the
same line.

8. Poor men think I, need not go up, so much as rich men should come down.
Metaphor:- There is an indirect comparison between ‘becoming poor’ and
‘coming down’
Antithesis:- Two opposite words ‘Poor’ and ‘Rich” are used in the same
line.

9. My many friends proved all untrue


Inversion:- The order of the words has been rearranged for poetic effect.
The correct order is “My many friends all proved untrue”.
