Question (1): [20 marks]

a) A step-up DC converter is used to charge a battery E of initial voltage 47V through 1 Ω resistor.
The supply voltage is Vs = 24V, the inductor is L = 10 mH, the switching frequency is f = 5kHz,
the duty ratio is k = 0.5, and. Draw the waveforms of the:
• supply current, [1 mark]
• battery current, and [1 mark]
• output voltage (across RE load). [1 mark]
and calculate:
i. The maximum instantaneous load current. [4 marks]
ii. The peak to peak inductor ripple. [1 mark]
iii. The delivered power to the battery. [2 marks]
b) Design a Buck regulator that has an input of 12V to supply a load of 5 A at output voltage of
6V. The switching frequency is 30 KHz. The inductor size is such that the peak-to-peak ripple in
the inductor currents is no more than 20% of its average value. The output ripple voltage is no
more than 5%. [6 marks]

c) Derive an expression that shows the effect of the inductor resistance on the Buck-Boost
converter efficiency. [4 marks]

Question (2): [20 marks]

a) {9 Marks} A single-phase half-bridge inverter is used to supply a resistive load of 10 Ω. If the

total output power is 1000 watt, find:
i. The rms value of output voltage. [2 Marks]
ii. The rms value of fundamental output voltage. [2 Marks]
iii. The average value of thyristor current. [2 Marks]
iv. The distortion factor of the fifth harmonic. [2 Marks]
v. The total harmonic distortion THD. [1 Mark]

b) {8 Marks} A three-phase full-wave controller supplies a Y-connected resistive load of R =10 Ω

and the line-to-line input voltage is 208 V (rms), 60 Hz. If The delay angle is α = 30⁰.
i. Fill out the following table in your answer paper showing the operating periods for each
thyristor. [3 Marks]
