Physics Notes - Class 11 Level
Chapter 1: Laws of Motion
Newton's Laws of Motion:
1. First Law: A body continues in its state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force.
- Also called Law of Inertia.
- Example: A book on a table stays still until pushed.
2. Second Law: F = ma (Force = mass acceleration)
- The acceleration produced is directly proportional to the net force and inversely to the mass.
- Units: Force (N), mass (kg), acceleration (m/s)
3. Third Law: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
- Action and reaction act on different bodies.
Inertia:
- Tendency of a body to resist change in its state.
- Types: Inertia of rest, motion, and direction.
Friction:
- Force that opposes relative motion.
- Types: Static, Kinetic, Rolling.
- Useful for walking but causes wear.
Free Body Diagrams (FBD):
- Diagrams to show all forces acting on a body.
- Useful in solving problems with tension, normal force, friction, etc.
Chapter 2: Work, Energy and Power
Work:
- Work is said to be done when a force is applied and displacement occurs.
Physics Notes - Class 11 Level
- Formula: W = F d cos(theta)
- Units: Joule (J), 1 J = 1 Nm
Positive, Negative & Zero Work:
- Positive: Force and displacement in same direction.
- Negative: Opposite direction.
- Zero: No displacement or 90 angle.
Energy:
- Capacity to do work.
- Types: Kinetic Energy (mv), Potential Energy (mgh)
- Conservation of Energy: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed.
Power:
- Rate of doing work.
- Formula: P = W/t, Unit: Watt (W)
- 1 horsepower = 746 W
Commercial Unit of Energy:
- Kilowatt-hour (kWh)
- 1 kWh = 3.6 10 J
Chapter 3: Current Electricity
Electric Current:
- Flow of electric charge.
- I = Q/t (Current = charge/time), Unit: Ampere (A)
Ohm's Law:
- V = IR (Voltage = Current Resistance)
- Graph between V and I is a straight line for ohmic conductors.
Physics Notes - Class 11 Level
Resistance:
- Opposition to flow of current.
- Unit: Ohm ()
- Depends on: length, area, material, temperature.
Resistors in Series:
- R_total = R1 + R2 + R3
Resistors in Parallel:
- 1/R_total = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3
Electrical Energy:
- W = VIt = IRt = Vt/R
Applications:
- Fuse: safety device based on heating effect.
- Rheostat: variable resistor.
