Imagine a world where children never grow up, where fairies flit about, and
adventure awaits around every corner. Welcome to the enchanted realm of
Peter Pan, created by the brilliant mind of J.M. Barrie. Before we meet the
creator lets meet the character hey peter are you there Ya here he comes
audience meet peter A free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and
never grows up, his outfit made of autumn leaves and cobwebs. In the book he also
carries a dagger for cutting and a sword for fighting. But sorry peter you can now go to
Wendy and maybe some other kids of neverland and teach them to fly
Are you sure that you want me to leave
Yes as today i am more interested to peep through the pages of this book where we all
hide ,meet me there meaning in the book , we'll sit down with the master
storyteller himself and explore the magic that has captivated readers for
over a century but before that I would like to about the book in my hand.
This story was earlier a play in 1905. In 1911, the novel was published by the
Hodders and Stoughton brothers in the UK. At present, the novel is famous
by the name Peter pan. GOSH, a leading children's hospital got the copyright
of the story by J.M. Barrie. So what are we waiting for let's sit with the creator and try
to understand this book in my hand which was written for adults but became children's
favourite ,please welcome our guest from the past- J.M. Barrie. Thank you sir
for joining us.
Hiu tinker bell you should be hiding in between those pages
I know sir i just have few questions so that these people watching us can
understand this book better
Go ahead Tinker
- Sir ,my first question. Your imaginative genius and storytelling mastery
in "Peter Pan" have captivated hearts for generations! Your innovative
storytelling, social commentary and characters have influenced
generations of authors, including C.S. Lewis and Neil Gaiman. It may
sound funny but who is your favourite character?
Barrie: Well being the author, I sometimes feel like I am the father and so
all of them are equally important to me but I am very fond of peter pan
and Wendy. Peter, being a mischievous little boy, hates taking
responsibility and cannot age.Wendy on the other hand, is a sweet and
responsible little girl who is not opposed to the idea of growing up. Isn’t it
interesting that despite being different, Wendy and Peter share a deep and
great bond.
- Sir is there any connection between you and peter pan
Maybe yes maybe not but this question takes me back to my childhood i
was ninth child of my parents ,naturally when there are so many children
the love of parents is divided When i was six years old, my elder brother
David my mother's favourite died in an ice-skating accident on the day before his
14th birthday I tried to fill David's place even wearing David's clothes and
whistling in the manner that he did. One time, i entered her room and heard her
say, "Is that you?" "I thought it was the dead boy she was speaking to", and I said
'No, it's no' him, it's just me.' Sometimes people accuse me of escapism depicting
a character like peter but then yes maybe i also never wanted to grow up
Mini: Interesting Sir no doubt you have written remarkable characters like
me peter wendy ,darlings ,the lost boys , but can you explain how we the
characters contributed to the central theme and what is the central theme
of the story?
Barrie: you know tinker the protagonist Peter Pan, a boy who never grows
up, takes three children from the darling family, to a magical land called
Neverland. There, Wendy mothers the lost boys. They go on adventures
with fairies, mermaids and pirates. Peter, being a child, never took
responsibility while Wendy takes responsibility. So it tells us that childhood
is beautiful but children, while wonderful and fun, are also heartless so it is
important to grow up. This was the central theme.
Mini: Sir Your iconic creation, Peter Pan, has become a cultural
phenomenon, symbolizing youthful rebellion and the power of imagination.
We all know that it has been very inspiring and entertaining for children-
Barrie: (interrupting) Why do people think that my story is only for
children. It’s just a story to some and to some, it is like a reflection.
Neverland is just a fictional place to some but to some, it is a symbol of
eternal childhood and an idea of Utopia. The crocodile in the book is not
just a crocodile but a reflection of time and mortality. The fairy dust is dust
that represents magic and wonder.
Wow , you just now gave me a new perspective to the story. By story, I
remember peter pan is a very entertaining story. There must be a lot of
delightful moments in your past that would have inspired you to imagine the
humour . Would you share some?
Barrie: Of course I have enjoyed a lot of delightful moments in my life but
not in reality. Because my enjoyment was within the four walls of my
imagination. I started to imagine Peter
Pan after the death of my brother David Barrie. Later in my adulthood, I
met George, Jack, Peter, Michael and Nico. With these kids, I started
creating these stories and later published them.
Moral of the story friends become writers and write about all the people
you meet observe feel emote and read .Thank You sir as i once again
plunge deep into the magical revolutionary funny sometimes depressing
world of my dear peter pan listen to this -
