Chapter 15: Locus
Topic 7: Locus #3-5 - From Lines
Locus #3: Fixed Distance from a Line
The locus a fixed distance from a line is a set of two parallel lines the same distance, d, from the line.
Diagram:
Locus #4: Equidistant from Two Parallel Lines:
The locus equidistant from two parallel lines is the parallel line directly between them.
Diagram:
Locus #5: Equidistant from Two Intersecting Lines:
The locus equidistant from two intersecting lines is the bisectors of the angle formed by the lines.
Diagram:
A related locus to this type would be locus of an angle….. the locus of an angle is the angle bisector.

Word Problems:
1.) Ms. C placed a strip of tape on the classroom floor, which forms a straight line. She instructs her students
to stand exactly 3 feet away from the line. What happened? Draw a picture to illustrate.
2.) Robyn's driveway is 25 feet long and 8 feet wide. She wants to plant flowers that are 6 feet away from the
center of the driveway. Describe, in words, how she should plant the flower; then draw a picture to illustrate.
3.) During his morning jog, Ryan runs down an alleyway between two buildings that are 20 meters apart and
parallel to one another. Describe his path down the alleyway so that he is always the same distance between
the two buildings. Draw a picture to illustrate.

4.) Rebecca is looking for a buried treasure! Her treasure map shows a V-shaped canyon formed by two
vertical cliffs. The directions state: Start at the point where the cliffs converge. Walk through the canyon
staying at an equal distance from each cliff; you cannot veer off of this path...
Draw a diagram to show the path that Rebecca must walk, then describe it in words.
On a Graph:

Locus from Lines: Homework
Complete the following questions below. Show all work.
1.) In a park, two straight paths intersect. The city wants to plant bushes that are equidistant from each path.
Describe how the city should plant these bushes. Draw a diagram to illustrate.
2.) In a coordinate plane, the locus of points 5 units from the x-axis is the
(1) lines x = 5 and x = -5 (3) line x = 5, only
(2) lines y = 5 and y = -5 (4) line y = 5, only
3.) A landscaper is creating a beautiful garden in Christine’s backyard. In her backyard Christine has a line of
bushes that are 7 feet apart. The landscaper thinks that it would be a good idea to plant daisies equidistant
from the bushes. Sketch a detailed picture of how the daisies should be planted.
4.) Graph and write the equation of points that
are equidistant from the lines y = -2 and y = -6.
