LATHE MACHINE

Before Operation:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
 Wear safety glasses or goggles with side shields.

 Wear closed-toe shoes.


 Do not wear loose clothing, jewelry, or gloves that could get caught in the
machine.
 Tie back or contain long hair.

Workpiece:
 Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped or held in the chuck or collet.

 Check for any cracks or damage to the workpiece.

Machine:
 Verify that all guards are in place and functioning correctly.

 Ensure the machine is in good working order.


 Check for any leaks or damage to the machine.
 Confirm the machine has an emergency stop button that is easily accessible.

Work Area:
 Keep the work area clean and free of debris, chips, and tools.

 Ensure adequate lighting.


During Operation:

Rotating Parts:
 Be aware of all rotating parts, including the chuck, spindle, and gears.

 Keep hands and body parts away from rotating parts.

Flying Objects:

 Be aware of potential flying objects, such as chips, tools, and workpieces.

 Wear appropriate PPE to protect against flying objects.

Tooling:
 Use the correct tools for the job.

 Ensure tools are in good condition and properly secured.


 Do not use callipers or gauges on a workpiece while the machine is moving.

Emergency Stop:

 Know the location of the emergency stop button and how to use it.

Coolant:
 If using coolant, ensure it is at the proper level and concentration.

 Be aware of the potential for burns from hot coolant.

Maintenance:
 Perform regular maintenance on the lathe to ensure it is in good working order.

 Check for any signs of wear and tear or damage.


 Replace any worn or damaged parts.
After Operation:

Machine:
 Turn off the machine and allow it to come to a complete stop before leaving.

 Remove all tools and debris from the work area.


 Clean the machine after use.

Work piece:

 Remove the workpiece from the machine and store it properly.

PPE:

 Remove and store PPE in a designated area.


PEDESTIAL DRILL MACHINE
PRE JOB INSPECTION

 Check workspace and walkways to ensure no slip hazards are present.


 Check that the drill chuck guard is in position.
 Ensure the chuck key (if used) has been removed from the drill chuck.
 Locate and ensure you are familiar with the operation of the ON/OFF starter and E-Stop.
 Follow correct clamping procedures to ensure work is secure.
 Check that the clamping device to be used is in good working condition and is
appropriate for the material being drilled
 Ensure all clamping devices are secured prior to commencing each task.
 If the job obstructs the walkway erect a barricade.
 Adjust spindle speed to suit drill, cutter diameter, and type of material.
 Faulty equipment must not be used. Immediately report suspect equipment.

Safety Guards

 Check that the drill chuck guard is in position.

PPE

 Wear safety glasses or goggles, or a face shield (with safety glasses or goggles).
 Wear hearing protection that is suitable for the level and frequency of the noise you are
exposed to in the woodworking area.)
 Wear protective footwear when required.
 Tie back your hair, remove jewellery, and wear fitted clothes to avoid getting caught or
pulled by the moving elements of the machinery.

Operating Pedestal Drill

 Never leave the Drill Press while it is running.


 Feed downwards at a sufficient rate to keep the drill cutting.
 Feed with care as the drill breaks through the underside of the work.
 Clean up a work area at completion of work.
 Always remove drill bits and store them at completion of work.

Maintenance

 Before making adjustments or before cleaning accumulated swarf, switch off and bring
the machine to a complete standstill.
 If maintaining or making repairs, use lockout procedures where necessary.
 Keep the machine properly oiled and serviced.
Don’ts

 Do not use faulty equipment. Immediately report suspect equipment.


 Never leave the machine running unattended.
 Do not hold the item being drilled with your hands. Use a clamp.
