Earthworm Pattern

aka Worm Girlfriend

Crochet pattern by Cute Creepy Crochet

(US Terminology)
Page

Copyright: Chae Aitchison (CUTE CREEPY CROCHET) 2023

Level: beginner/intermediate

Finished size: depends on yarn weight, for example-

Worsted weight yarn (weight 4- like the pink one in photos) will give you a worm about 7 ½’ long when
stretched out (about 4 ½’when “s” curved): width at widest is 6” using a 4.5mm hook (US size 7)
DK weight yarn (weight 3- like the orange and yellow one in photos) will give you a worm about 5 ½’
long when stretched out (about 3’ when “s” curved): width at widest is 4 ½” using a 3mm hook (US size
D approx.)
THIS PATTERN MAY NOT BE RESOLD: you may not resell or redistribute this pattern in part or in whole.

You may sell your creations from this pattern- online, in person, and on a
commission basis: please credit CuteCreepyCrochet for the pattern (and please feel free to share
your creations on social media- if you wish to tag, please use CuteCreepyCrochet on IG and Facebook. I’d
love to see what you’ve come up with!)

Supplies:
• Hook size for your project- size down from your yarn label: 4.5mm (US 7) for worsted weight
(instead of 5.5mm, US I/9). Size 3mm (US D) for DK (instead of 4mm, US G/6).
• Stitch markers, or similar
• Yarn needle (if making eyelids)
• Polyester filling
• Yarn in your weight/colour of choosing; about 960 meters of worsted weight yarn, or 615 m
(644 yards) of DK (I used 310 in the orange and 300 in the yellow)
• Optional: Safety eyes (I used 30mm for the large worm, and 15mm for the smaller- use what size
you’d like, or keep it more realistic and don’t use any)

Stitches/Abbreviations Used- **US terminology

• MR: Magic Ring
• St: stitch
• Ch: chain
• Sc: single crochet
• Hdc: half double crochet
• Dc: double crochet
• Sl st: slip stitch
• Inc: regular increase (two crochet stitches in one stitch)
• Dec: decrease (crochet two stitches together)
• F/O; finish or fasten off
• BLO: back loop only
• FLO: front loop only
• Numbers in brackets at the end of the row dictate the number of stitches you should have eg-
2

the first row of the worm will have (12) stitches in the round.

Instructions:
Optional- eyelids. Make 2 in yarn/hook of choosing
EG: (use 4.5mm/ US 7) for weight 4 worsted yarn.

The pink worm in the image examples has eyelids (the other version does not)

Chain 8
1) Turn, skip first stitch and sc across (7)
2) ch 1, turn, sc across (7)

Leave a long tail for sewing later and finish off

Worm- main body. Make 1 in yarn/hook of choosing

EG: (use 4.5mm/ US 7) for weight 4 worsted yarn

Pattern starts at the worm’s head and moves through the body. It is written to be crocheted in the
round. It’s helpful to mark the end of your row with a stitch marker.
Stuff the body as you work along.

Magic Ring: 6sc in MR (6)

1) inc around (12)
2) sc around
3) (sc, inc) around (18)

(The worm is crocheted in “segments” of usually 3 rows- there is some variation in other parts of the
worm- I’ll write them out as such so the pattern doesn’t become a wall of text and hopefully it’s easier
to keep your place)

**we are going to adjust the end stitch to keep it centered within the work.
Single crochet 2 additional stiches and place your row end marker on this new stitch (this will ensure the
“centre” seam is less visually prominent). In the image, the blue marker marks the last stitch from row
29. The golden yellow marker marks what would have been the last stitch in row 30. We will crochet 2

more stitches to move the row over to compensate for the spiral effect of crocheting in the round.
The bright yellow marker marks the new end of the row.
We will do this every once in a while, *noted by a “add 2 sc to move centre”

*43, 44, 45*(do NOT move centre)

(Final shaping before earthworm’s cuff)

from prior row, and sc 15 to the end of the row. (See pictures below for visual step by step help)
48) in BLO sc around (make sure there are 60 stitches total)
5
Page

--Row 47- single crochet around 45 stitches. This
will take you about ¾ of the way around. From
here you will turn without making a chain (a
chain stitch will put a gap in the wedge) skipping
the first stitch and continue the way you just
came, crocheting a total of 35 stitches bringing
you close to the beginning again.

--Do not chain. Just turn. Skip the first stitch,

and crochet from the second across the row as
stated.

--You will now have a partial row crocheted.

From here you’ll repeat turning, skipping the
first stitch (it minimizes the gap between wedge
rows once you crochet all the way around next
round) working the row as stated (see images
below for working in the “skipped stitch”)

--There will be visible steps where you’ve

worked two extra rows (2 rows on one end, one
row, and the row continued to the end on the
other end)- THIS IS FINE! When you crochet
row 48 it will smooth out the steps. Just be sure
that there are the full 60 stitches around- if be
sure to count the skipped stitches to give you
the full 60. And heck, if it’s giving you grief, just
fudge it in a way over the steps to
simultaneously smooth the step out, and give
you the 60. I won’t tell, I promise)
6
Page

--This is just to help you visualize crocheting in
the skipped stitch from the previous turn. From
here you’ll step down to the original row, and
crochet your merry way to the very end.

You’ll repeat this wedge like shape several times through the cuff to give you a tight curve. Just follow
the pattern… you’ll have lots of practice by the end of this.

**IF YOU ARE ADDING EYES- do so now before you get too far and it becomes more difficult. Eyelids can
be sewn on now, or even after completion- whichever you’re comfortable doing.
If you’re not attaching eyes, ignore all of this and continue at row 49

(Place eyes where previously marked. If you’re attaching eyelids, place them where you’d like them to
go; want an angry worm? Place them moreso to the front. Scared worm? Put them on the bottom.
Moderately content worm? Towards the back, and on a bit of an angle gives your worm a more
welcoming expression. I’ve included a silly sketch to help illustrate this, even though Wormmy looks
slightly concerned instead? Play around with it just for funsies)

CUFF
This will be worked in a series of wedges once the initial transition rows have been established.

49) in FLO of row 48 work hdc around, chain 2

First image shows row 50, now working in the back loop of row 48 (row 49 working through the FLO has
been complete); the chain 2 allows the front loop only row to sit comfortably ahead of row 50.

separation), and where you finish on row 50 with the red stitch marker. Make sure there are 60 stitches

Hey! You made it! Both to the end, and… the object. You made “the object”… you made THE WORM!
You both made it through!
Now squish the worm. Hug the worm. Let the worm hug you. Tell the worm you’ll love them even if
they turn into a human.

I hope you’ll share your completed projects with me- I’d love to see your colour combos, your yarn
choices (someone PLEASE do that honkin’ big blanket yarn so you have a worm the size of a room).

Take a pic, email me, tag me on IG, Ravelry, Etsy- share, share, SHARE! I’d love to see your creations.

Big love,my fellow makers <3
