Experiment Name: Windows operating system commands; Hands on practice
Objectives: The goal of this experiment is to run several windows OS
commands on the terminal (command prompt) to understand basic system
operations, file management, system configurations and system information
retrieval.
Necessary material and software:
1. A computer Running Windows OS (windows 10/11)
2. Command Prompt (cmd) – built-in terminal in Windows
Procedures:
Opening Command Prompt (cmd)
a. Press win+R, type cmd and press Enter.
b. Or, search "cmd” in Start menu.
Running commands:
1. help: lists available commands with brief description.
2. cls: Clears the cmd screen.
3. cd: Changes the current directory.
4. dir: Lists all files and folders in the current directory.
5. copy: Copies all files from one location to another location.
6. move: moves files from one location another.
7. del: deletes one or more files.
8. mkdir: makes a new directory.
9. rmdir : deletes a directory.
10. ipconfig: shows network configuration details, such as IP address and
subnet mask.
11. ping: tests network connectivity to a remote host.
12. tracert: shows the path taken to a destination IP address.
13. netstat: Displays active network connection and listening ports.
14. tasklist: Lists all running processes on the system.
15. taskkill: Ends a running process by its name or PID
16. Systeminfo: Shows detailed system information.
17. chkdsk: Checks for disk errors and repairs them.
18. Sfc /scannow: Scans and repairs corrupted files.
19. Diskpart: manage disks, partitions and volumes.
20. Format: Formats a disk for use with windows.
Example: format D:
21. shutdown: Shuts down, restarts or logs off the computer.
22. powercfg: configures power settings displays energy efficiency details.
23. gpupdate: forces a group policy update.
24. gpresult: displays applied group policy settings.
25. regedit: opens the windows registry editor.
26. sc config: Configures windows services.
27. sc start/stop: Starts or stops a windows service.
28. net start/stop: starts or stops network services.
29. net use: Maps or disconnects network drives.
30. net user: Manages user accounts.
