CE13104 Building Materials and Construction

Total Hour: 36
Course Objectives:

1. To identify and characterize building materials


2. To understand the construction practices for different elements of buildings
3. To identify the factors to be considered in planning and construction of buildings
4. To understand the techniques of damp proofing, fire resistance, thermal and sound
insulation
Module I (10 hours)

Cement: manufacturing process, chemical composition, IS specifications and tests, types and
uses. Fine and Coarse aggregate: source, impurities, classification, characteristics. Mortars
and concrete: classification, characteristics, functions of ingredients. Limes: classification
and applications. Bricks: composition, manufacturing, characteristics, classification and
testing of bricks, special bricks.
Module II (8 hours)

Timber: classification, seasoning, defects, wood product and its applications. Steel,
Aluminium & Plastics: types, properties, ingredients and applications. Paints, Distemper &
Varnishing: constituents, types, composition, defects, application.

Module III (10 hours)

Functional Planning of Buildings: general aspects to consider for planning, bye-laws and
regulations, site selection, principles of planning, orientation of building and its different
elements, components of building.

Foundation: types, applications, Masonry: Stone, Bricks and Confined, Types, Bonds,
defects

Floors and Roofs: types, components and materials, roof coverings. Doors, Windows and
Ventilators: terms, types, fixtures and fastenings.

Module IV (8 hours)

Plastering, Pointing: type, methods, defects. Dampness and Water Proofing: causes,
prevention methods, damp-proofing treatment, materials used. Fire Protection: fire safety
requirement, fire extinguishing equipment. Thermal Insulation: basic definitions, materials
used, methods. Acoustics & Sound Insulation: characteristics, sound insulation, acoustical
design.
