Required Readings

Cohen, R. J., Schneider, W.J, & Tobin, R. M. (2022). Psychological testing and
assessment: An introduction to tests and measurement. New York: McGraw Hill

*Although a textbook is provided as a reference, you can use any psychological testing
and assessment textbook. You will only be responsible for the topics covered in class.

Course Description and Objectives

Testing & Measurement course is designed to provide students with an introduction to
the field of psychological testing. The study of basic psychometric concepts (e.g.,
reliability, validity) as well as the functional considerations of psychological testing (e.g.,
development, administration) will be covered in the course. In addition, commonly used
tests from a variety of psychological subfields (e.g. intelligence tests, personality tests)
will be introduced.

When the students complete this course, they will:

• Develop an understanding of various psychometric concepts (i.e. reliability and
validity) related to tests and test construction.
• understand new developments, ethical considerations, and controversies associated with
psychological testing.
• understand the varied purposes of psychological testing in addition to the various
settings in which tests are employed.
• have skills related to the critical evaluation of tests and assessment instruments.

Grading, Evaluation, and Responsibilities

Moodle Class System

One of your responsibilities in this course is making sure that you have access to
Moodle Class System and can access the course's website. I will use Moodle System
frequently to post announcements, instructions on assignments, weekly chat sessions, and
other course-related materials. You are responsible for checking your Moodle System
account to follow the instructions on classwork.
P
Exams (70%)
There will be two exams, including the final exam. Each exam will include
multiple-choice questions. The exam questions will cover the lecture material, including
class demonstrations and videos. Exam grades will be posted on OBS. Upon request, you
can review your exams in my office, but you will not be able to take them home or
photocopy them. There will be no make-up exams unless you have a legitimate
reason, which does not include oversleeping or forgetfulness. The final exam will be
comprehensive (which will include the subject matter of all previous exams throughout
the semester). Please mark your calendars for the exam dates on page four, which
can be found in the class schedule.

Measurement/Test Evaluation, Comparison, and Presentations (20%)

This assignment constitutes 20% of your total grade, and it is one of the most
important tasks in this course. One of the main aims of this course is to provide students
with the ability to evaluate the adequacy of the scales in the scientific articles they read.
Therefore, at the end of the semester, I want you to find two scales that measure the same
concept. Scales can be developed from scratch or adapted from another language. After
briefly presenting these scales and their development phase, I would like you to mention
the strengths and weaknesses of the scales and explain which scale you would prefer, at
the end of the presentation, along with the reasons. You should refer to what we learned
in the previous lessons in your presentation.
Students are expected to form groups at the beginning of the semester for this
assignment. Each group should consist of a minimum of 3, and a maximum of 5 students
(Not 2, not 6!!). Please do not exceed 10 minutes!!!!!

Homework and In-Class Activities (10%)

You are expected to complete several in-class activities as a requirement of this
course. These activities will be randomly assigned, and they will necessarily be in class
throughout the semester. As you can see on page 4 in the syllabus, the dates of these
assignments are NOT announced, thus you should attend the classes to get credit for
these activities. You are also expected to participate in class discussions and answer
questions.
There will be no make-up unless you have an excusable absence. The number of
these assignments will be at least five in total, and they will be assigned on totally
random days. If more than five activities are done in class, only five of them will be
counted (meaning, if you are present in more than five activities, you do NOT get extra
credit).

Cheating and Plagiarism

Cheating will not be tolerated. The consequence will be failing the assignment for
sure, and/or you may fail the course as well. Students are sometimes unaware that they
have plagiarized (e.g., “paraphrasing”). A basic rule is to give credit where credit is due.
If it is not a theory or idea of your own, reference the author(s). Not citing the author(s)
means you are claiming credit for their words or ideas - which is plagiarism. If you have
any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please come see me for further
information.
