Dynamics Introduction

Dynamics is the study of motion of bodies under the influence of forces, fundamental in physics and engineering. Newton's Laws of Motion describe the principles governing this motion: the First Law states objects remain at rest or in uniform motion unless acted upon, the Second Law relates acceleration to net force and mass (F = ma), and the Third Law states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Free Body Diagrams are used to visualize forces acting on an object, aiding in problem-solving, as illustrated by a sample problem calculating the acceleration of a 5 kg object under a 20 N force.

Introduction to Dynamics: Newton's Laws of Motion

What is Dynamics?

Dynamics is the branch of mechanics concerned with the motion of bodies under the action of forces. It is a

fundamental subject in physics and engineering that studies how forces affect the motion of objects.

Newton's Laws of Motion

1. First Law (Law of Inertia): An object remains at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted

upon by a net external force.

2. Second Law: The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely

proportional to its mass. It is expressed as:

F = ma

where F is the net force, m is the mass, and a is the acceleration.

3. Third Law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Free Body Diagrams

A Free Body Diagram (FBD) is a visual representation used to show all the external forces acting on a single

object. It is essential in solving problems in dynamics by isolating the body and analyzing the forces involved.

Sample Problem

A 5 kg object is acted upon by a net force of 20 N. What is its acceleration?

Solution:

Using Newton's Second Law: a = F/m = 20 N / 5 kg = 4 m/s^2
