of substances
Suggested Solutions
Section A: Multiple-choice questions (8 marks)
1. B 2. C 3. C 4. A
5. B 6. D 7. B 8. D
Section B: Structured question (22 marks)
Question 1 (5 marks)
1. (a) No. The ions in caesium chloride are not mobile under solid state. 1
(b) Caesium chloride is not soluble in methylbenzene.
There is just very weak attractive force between methylbenzene molecules and the ions of 1
CsCl, which is not strong enough to overcome the stronger ionic bonds between the ions 1
of CsCl.
(c) 1
(d) In caesium chloride, each chloride ion is surrounded by 8 caesium ions, while in sodium 1
chloride, each chloride ion is surrounded by 6 sodium ions only.

Question 2 (7 marks)
2. (a) (i) Giant covalent structure 1
(ii) Silicon, diamond 1
either (better have both
(b) (i) Y
The molecules of Y packed regularly under room temperature in its sturcture, 1
suggesting that Y is a solid under room temperature. However, chlorine is in gas
form under room temperature.
(ii) Iodine 1
(iii) 126.9 x 2 = 253.8 1
(c) X has giant covalent structure while Y has simple molecular structure. 1
Greater amount of heat is required to overcome the stronger covalent bond between the 1
atoms in X than the weaker van der Waals’ / intermolecular forces between the molecules
of Y.
Question 3 (6 marks)
3. (a) (i) There are weak van der Waals’ forces holding layers of graphene together, layers 1
can easily slide over each other.
(ii) Yes.
Each carbon atom in graphene is only bonded to three other carbon atoms. 1
There is one unpaired electrons left becoming delocalized electrons for conducting 1
electricity.
(iii) No.
Carbon atoms in graphene are bonded by strong covalent bond. 1
The weak attractive force between water molecules can carbon atoms cannot 1
overcome the strong covalent bond between carbons.
(b) I don’t agree with the conclusion.
In order to melt graphite, strong covalent bond between carbon atomsCinstead of weak 1
van der Waals’ forces&between graphene needs to be overcome. Hence, graphite has a
high melting point.
Question 4 (4 marks)
4. Sulphur dioxide < sodium oxide < diamondQ 1
② Diamond has a giant covalent structure with networks of covalent bonds between carbon 1
structure atoms. Sodium oxide has a giant ionic structure with ionic bond between ions. Sulphur dioxide
has simple molecular structure with van der Waals’ forces between molecules.
The greatest amount of heat is required to break millions of very strong covalent bonds 1
between carbon atoms during melting. While melting sodium oxide just required to.break some
ionic bonds. Hence, diamond has the highest melting point.
The ionic bonds between ions in sodium oxide are stronger than the van der Waals’ forces 1
between sulphur dioxide molecules. Hence, the melting point of sodium oxide is higher than
sulphur dioxide.
