ADVANTAGE/DISADVANTAGE ESSAY
A lot of places in the world rely on tourism as a main source of
income. Unfortunately, tourism can also be a source of problems if it
is not well-managed.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in the modern
world? Do you think that the benefits of tourism outweigh its
drawbacks?
Although holidaymakers contribute hugely to the economies of many
popular destinations, the influx of tourists can also cause serious issues. This
essay will demonstrate how tourism can transform the economy of poor
areas but will also show that this can lead to such problems as the
displacement of local people. Whilst acknowledging that there are
drawbacks, the essay will argue that the advantages of the tourist industry
outweigh the disadvantages.
One country that has experienced a significant economic boost from
tourism is Thailand. Over the past 50 years, many of its small fishing villages,
where people often struggled to make a living, have been developed into
thriving holiday destinations. With all the hotels, restaurants, shops and other
tourist facilities that have been developed, there are now enough jobs for
everyone and the general standard of living has greatly increased. Many
local people have spotted new business opportunities and become
entrepreneurs which has further diversified the economy.
In Venice, on the other hand, the huge popularity of the beautiful canals
and stunning architecture with visitors from around the world has had a
negative impact on local residents. The growing need for tourist
accommodation, places to eat and shops has forced many people from their
homes to make way for this new development. Not only have these people
suffered by having to move away from their family and friends but the
situation has also resulted in a lost sense of community in the worst affected
areas.
In conclusion, although mass tourism can sometimes result in local
residents having to be relocated, it greatly improves the lives of most people
as well as contributing significantly to the national economy. Hence, the
positive effects of developing a tourist industry definitely outweigh the
drawbacks.

Complaint letter
Subject: Complaint letter regarding the poor maintenance of the garden
and improper waste disposal
Dear Sir,
I am writing to bring to your notice the poor maintenance of the garden around
our residential area and the improper disposal of waste.
I am Shawn Mendez, a resident of Rory Lane. The garden around the residential area
was watered regularly, and grass shrubs were trimmed and maintained neatly in the
beginning. It has been more than a month now since any kind of maintenance is
done in the garden. We have tried contacting the person in charge, but every effort
has just been in vain.
Another growing issue is the problem of waste disposal. There were people from the
corporation collecting garbage for disposal every two days, but it has been more
than a week now since they have collected any garbage from our area. This has led
to the accumulation of waste, and people have started dumping it in the corner of the
street as they have no other choice.
It would be highly appreciated if you could also inform the residents that all garbage
would be collected and not to throw them out around the street corners.
Thank you for considering this letter. I hope that you will find a solution to this
situation at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,
SHAWN MENDEZ
OPINION ESSAY/AGREE-DISAGREE ESSAY
Space exploration is much too expensive and the money should be spent on
more important things.
What is your opinion?
There is an argument that exploring space is a waste of money and that there
are more urgent needs to be addressed on earth, such as reducing poverty and
preventing environmental destruction. However, I completely disagree with this
opinion for two reasons.
First of all, many of the technologies we take for granted today were
originated thanks to space research. Take satellite technology, for example, which
we depend on for broadcasting and weather forecasting. Without satellites, we would
not be able to follow global events as they happen, nor give populations any warning
of approaching storms. Space research has also led to the development of new
lightweight materials that offer us heat protection and enable food preservation.
Therefore, the challenge of sending human beings into space has often driven the
development of new technologies that benefit our everyday lives.
Second, we cannot foresee the distant future, so we ought to develop the
capability to escape from the earth. Gradually, we are learning how humans can
survive for long periods in space and even travel to other planets in the future. If
space exploration is halted, this valuable knowledge will never be acquired. It is true
that environmental destruction is also a serious issue, but it is also true that we
remain dependent on our environment if we never accept the challenge of exploring
other worlds.
In conclusion, while we undoubtedly face serious problems on our own planet,
it is imperative that we continue to explore space. This will promote further
technological advances as well as provide a possible means of escape should earth
become uninhabitable in future. Ideally, all nations should cooperate in the
advancement of space research.

DISCUSSION ESSAY
Nowadays many families move overseas for job opportunities. Some people
think this is beneficial for the children of the families, while others think children
will find it difficult. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Sample Answer
Presently, it is fairly common for families to settle abroad in a developed
country. One of the most common reasons behind immigration is the availability of
better living standards and opportunities for younger generations. However, it is
often a subject of debate whether the benefits enjoyed by the children of immigrants
are worth the drawbacks faced. The following essay will explore the topic from both
perspectives and justify why travelling abroad has more benefits than drawbacks.
Firstly, travelling to a first-world country like the United States of America,
the United Kingdom, Australia, France, and other countries can open up a world of
opportunities for young people. The presence of a better education system, a more
developed economy and a progressive society can vastly improve the lifestyle of
younger generations. Also, people who are raised in these countries are more likely
to gain high-paying jobs due to better educational and social qualifications.
Nevertheless, there are several complications that are faced by the younger
section of the immigrant families that need to be considered. To begin with,
becoming accustomed to the norms and conventions of a foreign society can be a
challenge, especially for children. Younger individuals may face issues such as
bullying, discrimination, negative peer pressure and other grave problems when
living in a foreign country. Children may also be affected by the problems of the
entire household when making a transition to a new environment, which may impact
their personal life as well.
In conclusion, it is important to understand that there are both pros and cons
to travelling abroad. That being said, the advantages of travelling abroad surpass the
difficulties faced.

PROBLEM/SOLUTION ESSAY
Despite a large number of gyms, a sedentary lifestyle is gaining popularity in the
contemporary world.
What problems are associated with this?
What solutions can you suggest?
These days, a sedentary lifestyle is becoming more and more popular despite a big
number of sport facilities. This essay will discuss the main problems associated with
this issue and propose some possible solutions to avoid them.
The main problems caused by inactive lifestyle are obesity and various spine
disorders. A growing number of body research shows that long periods of physical
inactivity raise a risk of becoming overweight. This is because people burn fewer
calories and easily gain weight. Moreover, a lot of studies show that so-called ‘sitting
disease’ often results in posture and backbone problems. Due to constant sitting, a
person loses muscle tissue and curves spine, developing numerous spinal diseases.
For example, it has been proven that about 80% of people experience backache at
least once a week.
In my opinion, the best solution to these problems is promoting active lifestyle.
Firstly, millions of people stay less active because they use cars instead of walking.
Therefore, an effective way to make people more active is to advertise walking and
cycling as safe and attractive alternatives to motorized transport. Moreover, inactive
lifestyle is gaining popularity because nowadays a lot of people prefer passive rest
to workouts in the gym. And the best way to avoid the dangers of unhealthy living
is to obtain a regular dose of physical activity. Thus, promoting gyms and regular
exercising would increase the level of activity.
In conclusion, leading a sedentary lifestyle causes a lot of health problems, including
obesity and spinal diseases. The most effective solution is to increase the level of
fitness among the society by advertising physical activity.
