Q1. Name four major landforms.


A1. The four major landforms are:
a) Mountains
b) Plateaus
c) Plains
d) Valleys

Q2. What is lithosphere?
A2. The land above the water world is called Lithosphere.

Q3. How are landforms formed?


A3. On the surface of the Earth, many internal and external forces are constantly in action.
The Forces generate and create irregularities on the surface while the external forces are
busy in eliminating these irregularities. When both these forces simultaneously work
together, landforms like mountains, plains, plateaus etc are formed.

Q4. How are Volcanic mountains formed? Name 1 Volcano.


A4. The mountains that are formed by the piling up of materials is called a volcanic
mountain. Volcanic mountains are formed when the magma (Lava) brakes through the
Earth’s crust. These eruptions are accompanied by rocks, ashes and gasses over time, rocks
and lava cool and pile upon the surface. This process results into forming volcanic
mountains.
Example: Fujiyama in Japan.

Q5. Name the ‘Island continent’? Where is it located?


A4. Australia is an ‘Island continent’ because it is the only continent that is also a country and
it is surrounded by water on all 4 sides.

Q6. Mention the two functions of mountains.


A6. (1) Mountains are storehouses of fresh water, as many rivers have their sources in the
glaciers. Examples: River ganga originates in the Gangotri Glacier.
(2) Mountains attract tourists due to their pictures beauty and climate.

Q7. How are plains useful?


A7. (1) Plains have the Earth’s most important farmlands.
(2) Plains are places for settlements with sprawling cities, farming and industrial
activities.
(3) Construction of roads and railways is relatively easier on plains.
