What are Articles?
Articles are words used before nouns to show whether we are talking about something specific or general.
There are three articles in English:
1. A
2. An
3. The
Use of ‘A’
• Used before singular nouns that begin with a consonant sound.
• Example:
o a boy
o a car
o a dog
Use of ‘An’
• Used before singular nouns that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
• Example:
o an apple
o an egg
o an umbrella
Tip: Think about the sound, not just the letter.
• “an honest man” (h is silent – vowel sound)
Use of ‘The’
• Used to talk about a specific person, place, or thing.
• Example:
o the sun
o the Taj Mahal
o the book on the table
Important Notes:
• We don’t use any article with proper nouns (names), languages, or subjects.
o I study Maths.
o I study the Maths.
• Use “the” before:
o Rivers, oceans, mountains, holy books
▪ the Ganga, the Himalayas, the Quran
o Unique things:
▪ the sky, the moon, the internet
Definite Article:
• "The" is the definite article.
• It points to a specific person, place, or thing.
• Example:
o I saw the moon. (a particular moon we all know)
o She picked up the pen on the table. (a specific pen)
Indefinite Articles:
• "A" and "An" are indefinite articles.
• They refer to any one of something, not specific.
• Example:
o I saw a cat. (any cat)
o He ate an orange. (any orange)
