HP error beep codes

If a team won't start and beeping is heard, it is due to a hardware error, I list the code for
error of some HP models:

HP 4000, 4600, 7900, 8000, 8080

2 red LED blinks (one per second) + 2 seconds pause + 2 beeps.

• Thermal problem:
Make sure that the fans are not obstructed and rotate normally.
Try to disassemble the CPU cooler and reassemble it in case it wasn't properly fitted.

3 red LED blinks (one per second) + 2 seconds pause + 3 beeps.

• CPU failure:
Make sure that the CPU is properly seated.
Reset the board.

4 red LED blinks (one per second) + 2 seconds pause + 4 beeps.

• Power failure:
Make sure all the connectors of the power supply are properly connected.
Unplug the power from all components (DVD, HDD..) in case any component is
causing a short circuit.
Check that the power supply fan is spinning normally.
Check that the green LED on the power supply is on.
Change the power supply.

5 red LED flashes (one per second) + 2 seconds pause + 5 beeps.

• Memory failure:
Disassemble and reassemble all memory modules.
Change the memory modules.
Change the motherboard.

6 red LED blinks (one per second) + 2 seconds pause + 6 beeps.

• Graphics card failure:


Change the graphics card.
Change the motherboard.

7 red LED blinks (one per second) + 2 seconds pause + 7 beeps.

• Motherboard failure:
Change the motherboard.

8 red LED blinks (one per second) + 2 seconds pause + 8 beeps.

• BIOS error:
Reprogram the BIOS.
Change the motherboard.
9 red LED blinks (one per second) + 2 seconds pause + 9 beeps.

• CPU or motherboard failure:


Change the motherboard.
Change the motherboard.

HP 3000, 3100, 3080, 2400

1 short beep + 1 long beep + 3 seconds pause.

• Memory failure:
Remove and reassemble all memory modules.
Change the memory modules.
Change the motherboard.

2 short beeps + 1 long beep + 3 seconds pause.

• Graphics card failure:


Change the graphics card.
Change the motherboard.

3 short beeps + 1 long beep + 3 seconds pause.

• CPU failure:
Make sure the CPU is properly seated.
Reset the board.

1 short beep + 1 second pause.

• DVD missing:
Make sure the DVD is connected or disable it from the BIOS.

2 short beeps + 3 seconds pause.

• CDROM missing:
Make sure the DVD is connected or disable it from the BIOS.

3 short beeps + 3 seconds pause.

• BIOS failure:
Reprogram the BIOS.
Reset the board.
Change the motherboard.

4 short beeps + 3 seconds pause.

• BIOS failure:
Reprogram the BIOS.
Reset the board.
Change the motherboard.
5 short beeps + 3 seconds pause.

• BIOS successfully recovered:


You don't have to do anything; once it's recovered, it will start normally.
Reconfigure the BIOS.

HP 7300, 7700, 7800

2 red LED blinks (one per second).

• Thermal problem:
Make sure that the fans are not obstructed and are rotating normally.
Try to remove the CPU cooler and reattach it in case it wasn't properly seated.

3 red LED blinks (one per second).

• CPU failure:
Make sure that the CPU is properly seated.
Reset the board.

4 red LED flashes (one per second).

• Power failure:
Make sure that all power supply connectors are properly connected.
Disconnect the power from all components (DVD, HDD...) in case any component is
causing a short circuit.
Check that the power supply fan is spinning normally.
Check that the green LED on the power supply is lit.
Change the power supply.

5 red LED blinks (one per second) + 5 beeps.

• Memory failure:
Dismantle and reassemble all memory modules.
Change the memory modules.
Change the motherboard.

6 red LED flashes (one per second) + 6 beeps.

• Graphics card failure:


Change the graphics card.
Change the motherboard.

7 red LED blinks (one per second) + 7 beeps.

• Motherboard failure:
Replace the motherboard.
8 red LED blinks (one per second) + 8 beeps.

• BIOS Failure:
Reprogram the BIOS.
Change the motherboard.

9 red LED blinks (one per second) + 2 seconds pause + 9 beeps.

• CPU or motherboard failure:


Change the motherboard.
Change the motherboard.

10 red LED blinks (one per second).

• Bad Option Card:


Call HP.
