The Shadowing Method
Today, I would like to share with you a technique that will help you to improve your english speaking.
This technique is called “The Shadowing Method” and is perfect for speaking fluently. Many english
learners face challengues when they have to speak, like being nervous or having difficulty pronouncing
words correctly, for that reason, the shadowing method is one of the best ways to train your brain to
speak English naturally because it´s simple, effective and can be practiced anytime.
Maybe, you´re wondering how the shadowing method works, right? Well, it´s very simple, when you
listen to a native english speaker you must to try to repeat what they say as quickly as posible, it´s almost
like a shadow following someone. The goal is to mimic their pronunciation, rhythm and intonation
without stopping to think about gramar or meaning.
This method was developed by the Professor Alexander Arguelles a fomous polyglot who speaks multiple
lenguages. He discovered that shadowing helps learners to develop a natural speaking flow by training
their mouth and brain to work together efficiently.
Are you thinking what the catch is? The only requisite for this method to work is that you have to stop
thinking about grammar and vocabulary. Instead, you have to focus on pronunciation and fluency. When
you listen and repeat after a native speaker, you naturally copy their pronunciation and intonation, this
will help you sound more natural and reduce your accent.
Another benefit that i can mention is that you will start to recognize common phrases and expressions
without needing to translate them, because by repeating words and sentences quickly you train your
brain to think in english without hesitation. (duda, indeciso)
Finally, how can we use the shadowing method?
Firstly, we have to select an audio or video with clear and natural English pronuntiation. You can use
podcasts, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, youtube videos and so on. It´s important that the content
matches your level, neither too easy nor too difficult.
Secondly. We have to listen to the audio first, the main point is focused on the speaker´s pronuntiation,
rhythm and intonation.
Thirdly, we have to start shadowing, this means speak along with the speaker, we have to repeat exactly
what the speaker says, not to pause or stop, even if we make mistakes.
Fourthly, we check our mistakes by listening to the audio again, identify words or sounds we
mispronunced and practice them separately.
Finally, increase the difficulty over time by moving to faster and more complex content.
The more you practice speaking out loud, the more confident you become. Over time speaking English
will feel more natural and automatic.
