Course Overview
Growing mushrooms can be very profitable and with a promising future. The
problem is that there’s a lot to learn! Moreover, there is a shortage of mushroom
supply in Africa especially with more people being aware of the health benefits
of eating mushrooms. To have a successful mushroom farm you’ll need to
understand the production, value addition, and markets; the focus of this
course.
Learning Objectives
Enhance food security, nutrition, and food hygiene for healthier food
consumption. Income generative activity through production, value addition to
improve the livelihoods of the society.
Course Content
Module 1: HOUSING AND EQUIPMENT
The unit introduces the mushroom farmer to tools and equipment used in
mushroom production, tools for each stage of production, site selection for the
mushroom production house, and mushroom growing structures.
Module 2: PEST AND DISEASES MANAGEMENT:
In order for a business to grow, the entrepreneur must grow. First, the
entrepreneur’s role will evolve from primarily being a “doer” to a manager then
to a leader and ultimately to being a coach/mentor.
Module 3: CULTIVATION MANAGEMENT AND HARVESTING:
This unit provides a background to mushroom cultivation management and
harvesting. The unit equips farmers with skills and knowledge on types of
mushrooms, methods of preparing starter culture, mushroom growing
processes, activities, and harvesting
Module 4: FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY STANDARDS:
The purpose of the is unit to provide information on mushroom regulations and
food safety. The unit has regulations from HACCP, GMP, Hazard analysis, and
GAPs.
Module 5: RECORD KEEPING AND GROSS ANALYSIS:
The unit guides mushroom farmers on the different mushroom records and
gross margins. Farmers must keep records of their day-to-day activities to
monitor their farm operations.
Module 6: VALUE ADDITION AND PROCESSING:
The unit aims to guide farmers, agripreneurs, and companies on mushroom
value addition, ways to preserve and avoid spoilage, and different methods of
mushroom processing
Module 7: MARKETING AND MARKET LINKAGE:
The unit aims to provide information on the market opportunities and market
linkages for mushroom farmers and agri-preneurs seeking more access and
ways to penetrate the market.
