Installation Instructions for SATURN 11.
6
This installation note provides guidance for:
• downloading a SATURN installer and the licence key file from the SATURN website
• running the SATURN installer
• running the installation checks to confirm that the installation has been successful and SATURN is working.
This note does not cover the installation of the subscription software SatView and SatCoder, which also have a
different licensing method and have their own installation documentation.
IMPORTANT
The installer was changed for 11.4 to reflect newer IT standards and reduce errors that we had discovered users
inadvertently make. Please follow these notes carefully.
1. Prerequisites
.NET Framework
Microsoft .NET 4.5.1 (or later) framework must be on the PC before installing SATURN. This framework is not
packaged with SATURN as often it is already installed on the PC. If this is not the case, then:
For Windows 10:
▪ Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 Advanced Services is provided as part of the default build. If it is
not available, it may be turned on as part of the "Turn Windows features on or off" option within the
Windows OS Control Panel.
For Windows 11:
▪ Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 is included with Windows 11. Alternatively, it can also be installed
following instructions at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/install/on-windows-11.
Visual Studio Runtime Libraries
SATURN also requires at least two sets of the widely used Microsoft Visual Studio C++ Redistributable runtime
libraries (2010 and 2015-2019) to function and potentially a third (2013) arising from our OMX compatibility
issues. If they are not already installed on the PC, they may be downloaded from the Microsoft website.
• VS C++ 2010 (x86): https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=26999 then select the red
download button followed by vcredist_x86.exe.
• VS C++ 2015-19: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latestsupported-visual-c-downloads
and search for section ‘Visual Studio 2015, 2017 and 2019’, selecting the x86 version (ie ‘vc_redist.x86.exe’).
• VS C++ 2013 (x86): https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=40784 then select the red
download button followed by vcredist_x86.exe.
Administrative Privileges
For the successful installation of SATURN, the installer needs to have Administrative Privileges to avoid problems
regarding the registration of system files. Please consult your System Administrator to install SATURN on your
behalf if you have restricted privileges.
SATURN Licence Key
To run SATURN programs, a SATURN licence key (SAT10KEY.DAT) is required. This is unique to each
organisation (and country) and is supplied separately to the installation software. The installer requires the
SAT10KEY.DAT file to be in the same folder as that of the installer setup file during the installation. It is available
from the SATURN Downloader, just as the installation files are. You must use the latest key associated in line
with the "SATURN User Agreement" under which the product is licensed. If your organisation changes operating
name, then a new key should be requested as part of the agreement update process.

Dongle-based software
For dongle-based SATURN versions, you should have been supplied with a blue coloured physical hardware
USB key. For these versions, the setup will install the driver keys required for the dongle to work automatically.
When running the installer, please ensure the dongle is NOT plugged into any USB port on the PC, and only
inserted if requested. To run. the SATURN executables, as when running the installation checks, the dongle will
need to be inserted, though if not found, you will be prompted to insert the SATURN dongle and try again.
2. Download
Downloading of the software is now only made available to a single user within each organisation (your
organisation's SATURN software administrator). Old SATURN accounts may still open the downloader but not
give access to any software. Please contact your organisation's SATURN software administrator.
Note that where organisations span different countries, there are separate "SATURN User Agreements" in place.
Each agreement will have its own licence, separate downloader account, and SATURN licence key. If you install
software for use in another country, then provide IT services to another country, you must ensure that the correct
key file is used.
Both SATURN installers and SATURN licence key files are available from the downloader accessed through the
SATURN website:
https://saturnsoftware2.co.uk/
Just click on the DOWNLOADS button at the top right of the home page.
This will take you to the login page of our download area.
On the User Login Page, enter the Username and Password as indicated, and click on Sign in.
If this is the first time (or you have forgotten your password and contacted us to reset it), you will have been given
a temporary password, and access to downloads will be restricted.
You will be prompted to change the password and to contact us for access to the software. We will email you to
confirm that access to the software has been restored.

Selecting software
Log back in to get to the list of files to which you have access. This example shows the simple situation of having
access to a minimum two files to perform a successful installation of 11.6.03A – this may not be the latest version
that you want:
The files are the:
• SATURN Licence Key File for your organisation (name appears under "Level").
• SATURN Multi-User Multi-Core installer for 11.6.03A.
The actual level of the software in this example is "X9" though under "Level" it re-iterates that it is MC (multi-core)
For a dongle version, the name would say Dongle instead of Multi-User with the “Level” adding “_dongle”.
Clicking on the download symbol to the right of each file will go into the standard system downloading mechanism
and will enable you to save the files, in this case:
"SAT10KEY.DAT" - the licence key file
"SATURN 11.6.03A MC X9.zip" - a zip file containing:
"Release Notes.pdf" - the release notes for version 11.6.03A
"Installation Instructions.pdf" - this document (or equivalent)
"SATURN.VER" - containing confirmation of version / level / type
"setup.msi" - the installer
3. Installation Process
1. If Microsoft .NET 4.5.1 framework or later is not already available on the PC, ensure it is before starting the
installer (see 1 Pre-requisites above).
2. If installing a dongle version, REMOVE the dongle if it has been inserted into a USB port on the PC.
3. Copy the SAT10KEY.DAT file into the same location as that of the setup.msi.
4. Run the setup.msi file with Administrative Privileges.
5. SATURN installation begins. Click Next to continue.

SATURN | 11.6.03E Installation Instructions.docx Page 3 of 11
6. Read the Terms and Conditions, tick the box to accept them and click Next.
7. By default, the setup.msi installs all the features available for your license type.
If you wish to do a partial installation you can use this section to modify the selection, but this is not
recommended.
We however DO recommend that you check where the installer does write files to your machine (even if we
recommend you leave them in the default locations).
So, click Next to check/edit these locations (and NOT Install):
Of course, if you know you are happy with the defaults you can click Install (effectively skipping the next two
sections).

SATURN | 11.6.03E Installation Instructions.docx Page 4 of 11
8. Destination Folder is the location where the setup.msi installs the programs etc, with SatWin going directly
into that folder, and the actual SATURN version being installed going in a XEXES subdirectory labelled
according to the version.
This is also known as the Installation Folder.
If previous version(s) of SATURN are already installed on the PC, make sure to select the same installation
directory again. In this case, setup will update the help documentation, SatWin and install new version files,
then leave the previous version system files (XEXES folders).
Then click Next.
9. Test Data Folder is the location to put SATURN test data files in preparation for running the standard tests.
Make sure this is a folder where the user has read/write access.
Then click Next.

10. Click Install to begin the installation...
… which will take a little time…
11. If the installation is for a dongle version then DK2 DESkey will also need to be installed (otherwise it will go
straight to step 12).
a. Select the language to use and then click Next.

12. Once the installation is completed successfully, select the option to launch SatWin when setup exits to go on
to test the installation, and then click Finish to exit the setup.
Quiet Installation
For silent installations, a parameter called KEYFILEFOLDER has to be added to the msiexec command line call
with the folder path of the setup.msi file, where the SAT10KEY.DAT licence file (as downloaded) must reside.
For example, if c:\path is the location for the setup.msi and SAT10KEY.DAT files, the command line call is:
msiexec /i c:\path\setup.msi /quiet /qn KEYFILEFOLDER=c:\path\
Note - silent installation was not available prior to the 11.4.07H release.
4. Running the Installation Checks
Test networks are packaged along with SATURN to enable users to make sure that both SatWin and SATURN
are installed successfully and work correctly. Following installation, we strongly recommend running at least one
of these tests. To run the test networks:
1. Launch SatWin.exe to open the SatWin interface.
a. If a SatWin has previously been opened, the following Quick Start menu will appear. Click on “Create
New Model Complex” to open the SatWin interface.
5221730 | 11.6.03E | 02/07/24 |
SATURN | 11.6.03E Installation Instructions.docx Page 8 of 11
2. If you have multiple versions of SATURN XEXES installed, then you will need to check that the Model
Complex you have open is pointing to the version of SATURN you wish to test That is done using the drop-
down menu shown below (or any other version to be tested).
:
3. Navigate to the Support tab in the ribbon menu and find the ‘Test Networks’ option.
4. Run the test networks in the order listed in the interface.
a. If a dongle version of SATURN has been selected a Message Box may pop-up saying that the
SATURN Dongle cannot be found. Click OK and then insert the SATURN dongle. Then click on the test
network again.
Note: If you are testing a DEMO version, the Headingley test SHOULD fail as that network data contains 29
zones and the DEMO version is limited to 25 zones.
5221730 | 11.6.03E | 02/07/24 |
SATURN | 11.6.03E Installation Instructions.docx Page 9 of 11
The expected outcomes on running the test networks are:
• runs MXM1 module to build trip matrix (except Epsom OBA test)
• runs SATURN module to build network file and assign it with the built matrix
- for 11.6, the Epsom network runs with SATURNcfcf=F to give latest path build options
• opens a P1X with the assigned network leaving the user in the P1X interactive mode. For the Epsom tests
you should expect to see something like the following screenshot:
The SATURN Tests are run, by default, in the “C:\ProgramData\Atkins\SATURN\Test” folder which may not
always be visible in Windows Explorer. If this is the case, typing “C:\ProgramData\Atkins\SATURN\Test” in the
Windows Explorer address bar and pressing return will display the folder.
More detailed checking of the correct functioning of the software can be made if you have file comparison
software installed on the PC. Under the installation folder (see item (8) within section 3 Installation Process) you
will find a sub-directory called "REF" and below that folder(s) of the form (using the earlier example):
"11.6.03A MC X9"
These contain a copy of a run of the Tests from that given version/level of the software. For these Test networks,
we expect there to be no differences between any of the variants (multi-core / single, dongle / multi-user licence)
or different levels. In comparisons between the test files you generate and these reference files we expect the
only differences arising to be in variant/level identification, user company name, file dates/times and reported cpu
times.
5. XEXES for old versions (prior to 11.4).
The new installation method allows for the easy installation of multiple versions of SATURN post 11.4, with the
XEXES uniquely being identified throughout the process. Prior to this, the XEXES were always provided in a
simple directory called "XEXES" that it was left to the users to name and manage.
The simplest method is to identify whether an "XEXES only" variant of the required SATURN version for the given
level is available on your downloader. Simply download that and it will unzip to give you an XEXES folder that
you should rename, and can be put in parallel with other XEXES from a new installer. Note, previously multi-
core was treated as an add-on. If you require (and have access to) a multi-core version, you will need to download
the corresponding (version and level) MC add-on, and unzip the files from there to replace equivalent files in the
single core version.
5221730 | 11.6.03E | 02/07/24 |
SATURN | 11.6.03E Installation Instructions.docx Page 10 of 11
If there is no "XEXES-only" version available, we recommend that users follow the older contemporary installation
instructions on an independent machine that does not have any SATURN installed, and extract the XEXES folder
from that machine (renaming as necessary) and transfer to the target machine.
Alternatively, you can always contact us to see if we have already done this for the version / level you require
and added it to the downloader. Or, of course, we may be able to do it for you (but that may be subject to delay
/ resources being available).
Updating old XEXES
Having copied in old XEXES, it is necessary to update them to work with the latest software for several reasons
including:
• Very old XEXES contain batch files that cannot handle file names containing blanks (and some other special
characters).
• For comparing between models created with different SATURN versions, it is necessary to use the latest
consistent version of SATSTAT.
To update them, in SatWin ensure the current Model Complex is associated with the XEXES you wish to update,
and then use the "Update Batch Files" button.
Click on pane above to change to XEXES you want to update, ...then use these buttons.
Compatibility with SatView
It is necessary to have the version of UFS2UFV in each XEXES folder consistent with SatView (if it is installed).
The update for this is performed using the "Update UFS2UFV Files" button, and has to be run in each XEXES
version. This will also have to be done when a later release of SatView is installed.
