Lab Report

The experiment tested the electrical conductivity of copper sulphate, citric acid, and table salt solutions using different metal nails. The hypothesis suggested that copper sulphate would be the best conductor, and results showed that citric acid produced the highest voltage and current readings. The methodology included careful preparation of solutions and measurements using a digital multi-meter.

LAB REPORT 2

Experiment:
To test the strength of 3 solutions, copper sulphate solution, citric
acid solution and table salt solution using different metal nails as
conductors and see which solution best replaces the lemon/potato
Hypothesis:
From the copper sulphate solution, citric acid solution and table
salt solution, copper sulphate is most likely to best conduct an
electrical current and induce voltage
Variables:
Independent Variable: 3 different solutions, 3 different metal nails
Dependent Variable: Voltage and current readings due to
different nails
Controlled Variable: Volume of water in the cups, number of
teaspoons of solutes
Apparatus:
 Safety goggles
 6 plastic 100ml cups
 2 copper nails (electrodes)
 2 zinc nails (electrodes)
 2 steel nails (electrodes)
 4 connecting cables, alligator clip to alligator clip
 1 measuring cable assembly, banana plug to alligator clip,
one red and one black for each
 1 digital multi-meter
 Sandpaper
 Table Salt
 Copper Sulphate
 Citric Acid
 1 Teaspoon

Safety Precautions:
 Wear goggles
 Remove any water sensitive material from near the water
 If any of the citric acid or copper subplate solution splashes
on the skin or in the eyes rinse immediately
Method:
1.Rinse the cups
2.Fill the 3 100ml cups to 60ml with water
3.Label the cups A, B, C
4.Add 2 teaspoons of citric acid to cup A
5.Add 2 teaspoons of table salt to cup B
6.Add 2 teaspoons of copper sulphate to cup C
7.Stir to dissolve the solutes properly
8.Sand each nail to remove and residue or coating
9.Place 1 copper and one zinc nail in cup A making sure they
do not touch
10. Using the measuring cable assembly, banana plug to
alligator clip, connect the red wire alligator clip to the copper
nail and the black wire alligator clip to the zinc nail
11. Connect the banana plugs to their terminals in the
multimeter
12. Observe for any changes on/around the nails
13. Read and record the results
14. Repeat steps 9-13 with other nail combinations
15. Repeat steps 8-13 for cups B and C, and changing the
nail combinations

Citric Acid Results:

Nail Combination Volts (v) Current (mA)
Copper + Zinc 0,44 0,9
Copper + Iron 0,39 0,7
Iron + Zinc 0,31 0,5

Table Salt Results:

Nail Combination Volts (v) Current (mA)
Copper + Zinc 0,33 0,6
Copper + Iron 0,28 0,5
Iron +Zinc 0,25 0,4

Copper Sulphate Results:

Nail Combination Volts (v) Current (mA)
Copper + Zinc 0,27 0,5
Copper + Iron 0,23 0,4
Iron + Zinc 0,19 0,3
