Sample Interview Question (SQL + Business Insight)

Q: Tell me about a time you used SQL to solve a business problem or identify a
hidden [Link] Format Answer

S – Situation
At my previous internship, the product team was concerned about a drop in user
engagement on our platform. They wanted to understand whether this drop was
due to a technical issue, seasonal behavior, or a specific user segment churning.

T – Task
I was tasked with analyzing user login and activity patterns using our PostgreSQL
database to:

Data Analytics 2025 - Parikh Jain (Sample View) 4

Identify which user cohorts had declined in engagement

Pinpoint any sudden behavioral changes across time

A – Action
I wrote SQL queries to:

Segment users by acquisition month ( user_created_at )

Calculate weekly active users (WAU) for each cohort

Join this with product usage data to check for drop-offs

sql

SELECT
DATE_TRUNC('week', activity_date) AS week,
DATE_TRUNC('month', u.created_at) AS cohort,
COUNT(DISTINCT a.user_id) AS wau
FROM users u
JOIN activity_log a ON [Link] = a.user_id
WHERE a.activity_date >= NOW() - INTERVAL '3 months'
GROUP BY 1, 2
ORDER BY 1, 2;

From the data, I visualized the WAU trend per cohort in Excel.

R – Result
The analysis showed that users acquired via a specific referral campaign in March
had a 60% drop in engagement in the second month post-acquisition. We later
found they were primarily coupon-based users, leading to short-term usage.

This insight helped the marketing team refine future campaigns to focus on quality
over quantity, increasing Day 30 retention by 12% in the following quarter.

Why this works

Data Analytics 2025 - Parikh Jain (Sample View) 5

Combines SQL + business thinking

Uses data storytelling

Shows impact on retention, a key metric

Can be modified for different industries (e.g., e-commerce, SaaS)
