SECTION A: (COMPULSORY - 30 Marks)
1. (5 marks) Simplify the expression: (3x - 2)^2 - (x + 4)(x - 4)
2. (5 marks) Factorize completely: 2x^2 - 5x - 3
3. (5 marks) Solve for x: (3x - 4)/2 = (x + 2)/3
4. (5 marks) A number is divided by 5 and then 7 is added to the result. If the final answer is 15, find
the original number.
5. (5 marks) Convert the binary number 101110(base 2) to decimal.
6. (5 marks) A shopkeeper gives a 15% discount on a computer priced at Ksh 60,000. How much
does the customer pay?

Question 1: Algebra and Linear Equations (20 marks)
a) (5 marks) Expand and simplify: (2x + 3)(x - 5)
b) (5 marks) Solve the simultaneous equations:
2x + 3y = 12
4x - y = 5
c) (5 marks) The sum of the ages of a mother and daughter is 50. The mother is 4 times as old as
the daughter. Find their ages.
d) (5 marks) Solve for x in the inequality and represent on a number line:
3x - 7 < 2x + 5
Question 2: Number Systems and Sets (20 marks)
a) (5 marks) Convert 125(base 10) to binary.
b) (5 marks) Perform: (1101(base 2) + 1011(base 2)) (Show working and convert final answer to
decimal)
c) (5 marks) Given set A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and B = {3, 4, 5, 6, 7}, find:
- A union B
- A intersection B
-A-B
d) (5 marks) Express the recurring decimal 0.363636... as a fraction in simplest form.
Question 3: Ratio, Proportions & Percentages (20 marks)
a) (5 marks) Divide Ksh 18,000 in the ratio 3:2:1.
b) (5 marks) A student scored 45 out of 60 in a test. Express this as a percentage.
c) (5 marks) If a printer produces 120 pages in 3 minutes, how many pages will it produce in 15
minutes?
d) (5 marks) A man invests Ksh 20,000 at a simple interest rate of 5% per annum for 3 years.
Calculate the total interest and final amount.
