Module 9 Discussion

Implementing a Computer Information System (CIS) enhances efficiency by automating charge capturing, reducing claim denials, and improving communication, which ultimately leads to increased revenue and productivity for stakeholders. It also benefits medical staff and patients by facilitating better interaction, access to medical information, and effective communication among healthcare providers. Overall, a CIS provides accurate and up-to-date patient information at the point of care, improving the healthcare experience for all involved.

The key to any implementation of a CIS is to improve efficiency through various

measures. While there are upfront costs, it has been shown that a computer information system
“automates and improves capturing of charges, [results in] fewer claim denials, frees up storage
space, maximizes billing and reduces down coding, enhances communication and improves
physician productivity, decreases need for increasing staff, [and] reduces insurance premiums
covering malpractices allegations” (How to use EMR/EHR for increases revenue). When
efficiency is increase, there is a downstream phenomenon that affects all people involved.
Stakeholders see increase revenue and better productivity.
Medical staff and patients also have a better experience with the implementation of a
CIS. A CIS improves “patient and provider interaction and communication, as well as health care
convenience” (What are the advantages of Electronic Health Records? 2022). Patients have
easier and more complete access to their own medical information via an EHR. Doctors can
perform their jobs better though more effective charting and communication with one another. A
CIS can provide “accurate, up-to-date, and complete information about patients at the point of
care” and it helps to “securely share electronic information with patients and other clinicians”
(What are the advantages of Electronic Health Records? 2022).
