Module 4 Assessment Task (Normal&Sampling)

The document contains solutions to statistical problems involving normal distribution and sampling distribution. It calculates proportions of IQ scores, the lowest qualifying score for civil service exams, and probabilities related to employee salaries and resident opinions. Key results include approximately 74.95% of the population having IQs between 85 and 120, a qualifying score of 83.33 for civil service, and a 6.43% probability that the mean salary of a sample is less than ₱29,000.

MODULE 4 ANSWERS

NORMAL DISTRIBUTION
1. On the assumption that IQ'S are normally distributed in the population with
mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, find the proportion of people
with IQ'S BETWEEN 85 and 120.
Solution:

IQ scores are normally distributed.

Mean (μ) = 100

Standard Deviation (σ) = 15
Find the proportion of people with IQs between 85 and 120.

Z-scores formula:

z = (x - μ) / σ

IQ = 85:
z1 = (85 - 100) / 15 = -1
IQ = 120:
z2 = (120 - 100) / 15 = 1.33

Z-Table:
Standard normal curve between z = -1 and z = 1.33. This represents the proportion of people with IQs
between 85 and 120.

Standard normal distribution table:

The area to the left of z = -1 is 0.1587

The area to the left of z = 1.33 is 0.9082

The area between z = -1 and z = 1.33 is

0.9082 - 0.1587 = 0.7495

Thus, approximately 74.95% of the population has an IQ between 85 and 120.

3. Scores for a civil service exam are normally distributed with a mean of 75
and a standard deviation of 6.5. To be eligible for civil service exam
employment, you must score in the top 10%. What is the lowest score you
can earn and still be eligible for employment?

Solution:
Z-score associated with the 90th percentile is approximately 1.28.

mean (μ) of 75
standard deviation (σ) of 6.5

Lowest qualifying score = μ + (z-score) * σ

Lowest qualifying score = 75 + (1.28) * 6.5 = 83.33

Therefore, to be eligible for civil service employment, you must score approximately 83.33 or
higher on the exam.

SAMPLING DIRTRIBUTION
1. In a survey of a company, mean salary of employees is P29, 321 with SD of
P2, 120. Consider the sample of 100 employees and fine the probability that
their mean salary will be less than P29, 000?
Solution:

Population mean salary (μ): ₱29,321

Population standard deviation (σ): ₱2,120
Sample size (n): 100

The probability that the sample mean salary (x̄ ) is less than ₱29,000.

The sample size is large (n ≥ 30) (the Central Limit Theorem).

The sampling distribution of the sample mean will be approximately normal with:

Mean: μ_x̄ = μ = ₱29,321

Standard deviation: σ_x̄ = σ / √n = ₱2,120 / √100 = ₱212

Z-score formula:
z = (x̄ - μ_x̄ ) / σ_x̄

Substituting the values:

z = (29,000 - 29,321) / 212 = -1.52

Z-score is less than -1.52.

Standard Normal Distribution:P(z < -1.52) =0.0643

Therefore, the probability that the mean salary of a sample of 100 employees will be less than ₱29,000 is
approximately 0.0643 or 6.43%.

3. The true proportion of residents at small barangay that favored the genuine
opposition senatorial candidates is 85%.What is the probability that at least
75% of the 60 residents favored the genuine opposition.

Solutions:
Identifying the parameters:

n: The number of trials (residents) = 60

p: The probability of success (favoring the genuine opposition) = 0.85

Calculating the probability:

P(X ≥ 75) = 1 - P(X < 75)

where:

P(X ≥ 75) is the probability of at least 75 successes

P(X < 75) is the probability of less than 75 successes

Calculating P(X < 75) involves summing the probabilities of 0 to 74 successes.

Conclusion:

P(X < 75), subtract it from 1 to get P(X ≥ 75), which is the probability that at least 75% of the 60 residents
favored the genuine opposition.
