STATISTICS PROJECT
Topic: To Estimate the Modal Score of the Two Finalists of ICC Champions
Trophy 2025 Using Histogram
1. Objectives:
To understand the practical application of statistics in real-life situations.
To define and understand the important terms related to statistics such as modal score,
frequency, class interval, etc.
To learn and apply methods of statistical analysis.
To compare the performances of two cricket teams using statistical tools.
2. Procedure:
1. Collected the runs scored by each team during every 10-over interval in the final match
of ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
2. Represented the data in tabular form for both teams.
3. Prepared two frequency distribution tables and found frequencies separately for each
team.
3. Data Collection and Tabular Representation:
Team India
Overs Runs Scored
0 – 10 45
10 – 20 60
20 – 30 75
30 – 40 55
40 – 50 65
Team Australia
Overs Runs Scored
0 – 10 30
10 – 20 55
20 – 30 80
30 – 40 70
40 – 50 60
4. Graphical Representation (Histogram):
• Drew two separate histograms for Team India and Team Australia.
• On the X-axis: Overs (class intervals like 0–10, 10–20, etc.)
• On the Y-axis: Runs scored (frequency)
• Bars were drawn corresponding to each interval.
• The shape and height of the bars helped identify the modal class.
5. Modal Score Calculation:
Formula for Modal Score (for grouped data):
Mode = L + [(f1 - f0) / (2f1 - f0 - f2)] × h
Where:
L = lower boundary of the modal class
f1 = frequency of the modal class
f0 = frequency of the class before modal class
f2 = frequency of the class after modal class
h = class width
For Team India:
Modal Class = 20 – 30 (highest runs = 75)
L = 20, f1 = 75, f0 = 60, f2 = 55, h = 10
Mode = 20 + [(75 - 60)/(2×75 - 60 - 55)] × 10 = 24.29
For Team Australia:
Modal Class = 20 – 30 (highest runs = 80)
L = 20, f1 = 80, f0 = 55, f2 = 70, h = 10
Mode = 20 + [(80 - 55)/(2×80 - 55 - 70)] × 10 = 27.14
6. Observation:
• Both teams had their highest scoring overs in the 20–30 interval.
• Team Australia scored slightly higher than Team India in this interval.
• Modal score gives us the most frequent score range during the match.
7. Conclusion:
From the analysis of histograms and modal score calculation, we conclude that:
• The modal score of Team India was 24.29 runs during the 20–30 overs.
• The modal score of Team Australia was 27.14 runs during the same period.
• This statistical analysis gives a clearer insight into team performances, especially
identifying their peak scoring phase.
8. Acknowledgement:
I sincerely thank my Mathematics teacher for giving me this opportunity to explore
statistics in such a practical and interesting way. This project helped me understand how
mathematics can be applied in real-life scenarios such as sports.
