BMW DIGITAL KEY & BMW DIGITAL KEY PLUS
With BMW Digital Key and BMW Digital Key Plus a compatible smartphone acts as the vehicle’s
key fob and main key. The owner has control over vehicle functions directly on their smartphone or
smartwatch “Wallet” feature. Additionally, the owner can use the “Key Card” which is a credit card
shaped NFC card that can be activated and used as a key when the owner wishes to not leave
their key fob or phone. With BMW Digital Key and BMW Digital Key Plus, the vehicle owner can
have all of their compatible vehicle keys on their smartphone device, smartwatch, or Setup Card.

Depending on BMW vehicle limitations and smartphone limitations, BMW Digital Key and BMW
Digital Key Plus make it easy for the owner to share keys with friends or family members with the
ability to set restrictions¹ and limitations such as top speed restriction and setting the maximum
radio volume via the “Wallet” feature. The vehicle owner can even revoke shared keys at any
time. The recipient of the shared Digital Key and Digital Key Plus can access the key even if they
do not have a BMW ID or have the My BMW App.

For added security, the user can optionally choose to require authentication before the
Digital Key works.

If the Express mode or comfort access is switched off or the Screen lock is turned on, the Key
holder will need to use authentication methods including Face ID, Touch ID, Pin, Password or an
alternative method as established by mobile carrier.

If the Passive mode is on, the Smartphone can stay in the users pocket and the car will
automatically unlock when approaching and lock when leaving. If the user turns off
“Passive Entry”, authentication on his or her smartphone is required.

Use of the My BMW App is recommended for creating the “main key”. If your vehicle is compatible,

DIGITAL KEY PLUS: A SUMMARY
Digital Key Plus is the latest and most advanced version of BMW’s Digital Key technology. More
significantly it’s extremely useful and user friendly with a relatively simple setup routine and
intuitive operation. Already standard on the 2025 BMW iX, it will soon be the car owner’s point of
access for all BMW vehicles.

Three Physical Components

Digital Key Plus is built on a wealth of technology that works behind the scenes, but it is simple in
operation, with only three components:

Unlike previous BMW key systems, the car is delivered with a single Physical Key Fob. This fob is
required only for the final step of Digital Key Plus setup.

The Digital Key, installed on the owner’s smartphone and paired with the car owner’s vehicle, is
the “key” that will always be used to operate and interact with the vehicle. Once the Digital Key
has been installed on the owner’s smartphone the Setup Card and Physical Key must be stored
away from the vehicle, most logically in the owner’s home. The deactivated Service Card can be
stored in the vehicle so it’s on hand when needed.

THE SETUP ROUTINES
The process for installing the Digital Key on a smartphone differs between current and new
BMW owners.

NEW OWNER 1ST STEPS

1 New owners must first create a BMW ID before
proceeding with installation. To do this, they should
hold the Setup Card against the back of their
smartphone. If the setup process does not initiate, they
can scan the QR code on the back of the Setup Card.

2 When prompted, they should download the My BMW

App, open it, create a BMW ID, and set a login
password. From this point forward, the installation and
setup process are the same for all BMW owners.

INSTALLATION
1 To install the Digital Key, hold the Setup Card against
the back of a smartphone with the My BMW App and
vehicle owner’s BMW ID. If the setup does not initiate,
scan the QR code on the back of the Setup Card.
2 Follow the on­screen instructions to complete the
installation.
3 Once installed, the BMW owner must enter the vehicle
with the Physical Key Fob. The My BMW App will then
prompt the owner to confirm they are inside the vehicle.

4 After confirmation, the app will request permission to
store the Digital Key Plus in the smartphone's digital
wallet. Some smartphones may not support storing the
installation of the Digital Key in a wallet. In such cases,
complete the installation the same way you would when
adding a credit card.
5 Once installation is complete, the Setup Card and
Physical Key Fob should be stored in a secure location,
such as the BMW owner’s home. Neither the Setup
Card nor the Physical Key Fob will be required to unlock
or operate the vehicle or to perform Digital Key
functions, including opening and closing windows or
accessing the trunk or tailgate.

ADD BMW KEY TO WATCH

The Digital Key can also be installed on
compatible smartwatch devices. Once the key
has been installed on the owner’s smartphone,
an option to install Digital Key Plus on a
smartwatch will appear in the app—provided
both the phone and watch are Digital Key
compatible. Simply follow the prompts that
appear in the app. Once the process is
complete, the Digital Key should appear in the
smartwatch’s digital wallet or the equivalent.

Sharing Digital Key Plus
Digital Key Plus can be shared with family members or other trusted individuals. Up to eighteen
shares can be activated across all compatible smartphone devices and BMW vehicles equipped
with the Digital Key Plus technology. To share the key:

1 In your digital wallet or the section of your smartphone

where the Digital Key is stored, tap the key to open it.
2 Select the sharing button or symbol—the same used to
share photos or texts.
3 A list of sharing apps will appear. Choose your text
messaging app, select a recipient, and send the key.
 Restrictions can be applied to a shared Digital Key,
including limiting its use to specific hours, designated
areas, and a set speed limit. These restrictions must
be configured before sending the sharing invitation.
Android Apple
 On some smartphones a digital activation code may
be generated when sharing the key. If this occurs, the
vehicle owner must send that code separately to
complete activation of the Digital Key.
4 Recipients will receive a message containing a link to add the Digital Key to their smartphone
and, in most cases, their digital wallet.
 The first time they use the shared Digital Key to unlock and enter the vehicle, they must
activate it on the vehicle’s screen to enable all functions, including starting the vehicle.
They may also be prompted to enter the activation code sent separately by the vehicle
owner.

THE DIGITAL KEY PLUS SERVICE CARD
The Digital Key Plus Service Card can be stored in the vehicle in its deactivated state and
activated as needed when valet parking, during service visits, in the event of a tow, or other
temporary vehicle use. However, it must always be deactivated after use.

ACTIVATION
1 To activate the service card, place it in the BMW’s
wireless charging tray.
2 When a pop up appears on the vehicle’s display, select
“Activate Card.” Alternatively, navigate to:
“All Apps” > “Keys” > “Digital Key” > “Activate Key.”

DEACTIVATION
Before retuning the Service Card to storage, it must be
deactivated.
1 To deactivate, place the card in the wireless charging
tray, then, on the vehicle’s display, select:
“All Apps,” > “Keys,” > “Deactivate Card.”
2 Once deactivated, it can be safely stored in the vehicle.

Neither the Setup Card nor the Physical Key should ever be
stored in the car.

DIGITAL KEY WITH IPHONE WITH APPLE
WALLET
Within the Apple Wallet, select “Continue” and
place the iPhone in the smartphone tray
(required for Digital Key only). With Digital Key
Plus, the iPhone does not need to be placed in
the smartphone tray.

After activating the main key, you may remove

the iPhone from the smartphone tray.

After adding the Digital Key to your
smartphone Wallet, you have the option of
also enabling it onto your Smartwatch.

Follow the prompts on the app to finalize

adding the Digital Key to your compatible
Smartwatch and smartphone device. Once
the Digital Key process is completed, go to
the Wallet menu and the Digital Key will
appear in the available passes/cards.

DIGITAL KEY SHARING OF KEY
Sharing Digital Keys is made easy via the “Wallet” feature on compatible smartphone devices.
The vehicle owner can share securely through a compatible messaging app that is fully active
upon acceptance by the recipient. The recipient should click the link to add to their
smartphone’s Wallet or use Apple Airdrop or Android Nearby Share. Depending on the
smartphone, it may be necessary to provide an additional activation code to the recipient.
Sharing between different smartphone device providers and Apple Watch follows a similar
route as described above.

Recipient does not need a BMW ID account or My BMW App. The vehicle owner will see
“invitation Pending” until the Digital Key invitation is accepted. Then, the owner will see
“Unlock and Drive” when a friend added Car Key to Wallet.

DELETING MAIN KEY
The “Main Key” is the key of the vehicle owner and can be deleted via smartphone or iDrive/
Operating system.

REVOCATION OF SHARED KEYS
Shared Keys access can be revoked by both the owner or a shared key user via two methods:

1 Via Apple Wallet / Google Pay / Samsung Pass App. Please note, for safety reasons when
the owner revokes a shared key, the key will be in a “pre­deletion” state until another
active key (digital or classic) uses the vehicle once. However, if a shared key user revokes
their access, it is immediate.

Or

2 Via the iDrive, with either the “Main Key” or physical key fob within the vehicle go to:
Operating System 8/8.5/9: Keys > Main Key > Key Management > Delete Key.
iDrive 7: Settings > Doors > Digital Key > Select Shared Key.
Please note this action is immediate.

The recipient of the shared Digital Key can revoke their own access at any time via Wallet, this is
effective immediately. Also, the recipient can delete his access via the car but only with the main
key of the owner or a classic key fob present.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What are the vehicle requirements for BMW Digital Key?
Digital Key is included as part of the Comfort Access package on suitably equipped vehicles, the Digital
Key feature will be active and available for setup and usage for as long as BMW supports it. A complete
list of supported vehicles can be found on the BMW Service Availability Matrix at www.BMWUSA.com/
ConnectedDrive. Additionally, users can activate their BMW Digital Key Card; a credit card­shaped NFC
card. This feature depends on various preconditions with regard to smartphone hardware, network
provider, and markets. More information on BMW Digital Key can be found on FAQ.BMWUSA.com.

2. What are the smartphone requirements for BMW Digital Key and BMW Digital Key?
As of this writing, BMW Digital Key is compatible with select iPhone, Google Pixel, and Samsung Galaxy
devices. A list of compatible smartphones and watches can be found on FAQ.BMWUSA.com or by
clicking here. Please note that related apps such as the Wallet app, My BMW App, and all smartphone
app stores need to be up­to­date for Digital Keys to be accessible and to share Digital Keys. This
feature depends on various preconditions with regard to smartphone hardware, network provider, and
markets.

3. Can I link my Digital Key to my driver profile?

Yes, when using your BMW Digital Key it acts as its vehicle key paired with your Driver Profile.
Please note: each profile can only be linked to a single device using Digital Key.

4. Can I share my Digital Key with friends and family?

Yes, you may share your Digital Key with up to 5 friends and family members with compatible devices.
If you have Digital Key Plus you may share your Digital Key with up to 18 recipients. When sharing
multiple keys, the owner may be prompted to use their key before sharing. Shared Key access can be
sent with the option of certain driving restrictions (e.g. top speed limit and parameters) and can be
revoked at any time.
Please note: Shared Key access with “Restricted Driving” is not available for M model vehicles.

5. Is there a Valet Mode?

All cars running iDrive 7 or newer have Valet Mode. This is completely independent of Digital Key.
Please note: owner is recommended to give Key Card or physical key fob to the valet.

6. What happens if I upgrade my smartphone?

At any time, if the owner replaces their smartphone device with a new compatible smartphone device,
they can move the owner key over to the new smartphone. By creating a new key on the new phone the
old one will be deleted.
Please note: Shared keys will not be deleted and will have to be sent new invitations.

7. Is Digital Key deactivation instant?

Yes, the deactivation of the Digital Key is instant when completed from the iDrive. For safety reasons
when the driver stops sharing a Digital Key, the deleted shared key will be in a “pre­deletion” state. The
key will remain in a “pre­deletion” state until another active key (digital or physical fob) uses the vehicle.
However, if a shared key user revokes their access, it is immediate.

8. Can I still use Digital Key if my smartphone has no power, no cellular connection or is in
airplane mode or low battery mode?
Depending on why your smartphone is powered down, the availability of Digital Key varies. Each model
smartphone device has a safety feature allowing users to unlock/lock/start the vehicle without having to
first unlock their smartphone, for up to 5 hours after the device has run out of battery or has a depleted
battery. The device terms are:
iPhone: Express Mode (enabled by default);
Google Pixel: Lock Screen (enabled by default);
Samsung Galaxy: Security­Required Authentication (disabled by default).
If these settings are manually changed or you have manually turned off your device, Digital Key will not
work. Airplane mode, Low battery mode, and cellular connection do not affect Digital Key operation.
Please note: This feature is not available for Apple Watch users.

9. Is Digital Key secure?

Yes. The key is saved on a chip on the smartphone called the “Secure Element”, which provides
standardized hardware security as well as software security.

10. How do I lock my BMW with Digital Key?

All lock and unlock settings will natively transfer to the Digital Key. These settings are stored in iDrive
and are customizable just like a regular key fob. All vehicle doors and the trunk must be closed before
using the Digital Key which can only lock and unlock the vehicle at the driver's door handle.

11. Why can’t I pair my smartphone device with Digital Key?

If you are having issues connecting your device with Digital Key, please make sure your vehicle is in
accessory mode as it is not possible to pair with the engine on.

12. When should I leave my paired device in the charging tray?

There are two instances in which the paired device should be left in the charging tray.
1) when starting the vehicle and 2) when using the trunk button on the interior of the driver’s door.
Please Note: These actions are not necessary for Digital Key Plus users with Comfort Access
compatible devices.

13. What should I do if my smartphone has been lost or stolen?

If you lost your smart device with the “Main Key” it is recommended to delete your device via the iDrive
by following the steps located in this guide.
