Presentation on
Double Line
Block Instrument

P RUDRA CHARY
Sr.Inst / MDZTI (S&T)
INTRODUCTION

 Block Instrument means an equipment used for safe running of trains

between two block stations to ensure space interval.
 SGE block instrument is used for double line block working.
 One station will have two block instruments, one for station in advance
and another for station in rear.
INTRODUCTION

 The instrument is simple, compact and robust in

design
 It requires simple regular maintenance and
scheduled overhauling
 It shows three positions of block section for each
line namely
LINE CLOSED,
LINE CLEAR and
TRAIN ON LINE.
TYPES OF DOUBLE LINE BLOCK INSTRUMENTS
4

There are three types.

1.SGE Type – Byculla make,

2.IRS Type – Howrah make and
3.SGE Modified Type – Podanur make.(SCR)

SGE- Siemens General Electric

TOL(20º) LB-TOL(10º) LB LC

Safe Condition: Armature falls in to Half Notch to lock the Commutator

well in advance of TOL Contact Making, with the provision of Half /Auxiliary
Notch , the commutator is prevented from being turned to line closed and
therefore, the possibility of granting another line clear is avoided

SALIENT FEATURES
9

(a) It is Non-Cooperative type block instrument

(b) All operations are @ Receiving end block
(c) It has Commutator Handle for operation &
has 3 positions

i. Line Closed (LB)

ii. Line Clear (LC)
iii. Train on Line (TOL)
SALIENT FEATURES
10

(d) It has Conditional TOL locking i.e.,

BOH (Block Operating Handle) is free to move from
1) LB to LC
2) LC to LB
3) LB to TOL
but the commutator Handle is locked
i) when it is turned from Line Clear to TOL in
connection with train movement and
ii) BOH is not locked when it is turned directly from
Line closed to Train on Line in connection with
shunting
SALIENT FEATURES
11

(e) Line current is 25mA (NT-25mA, PTJ-60-70mA, Daido-110mA )

(f) Suitable both for Non-RE & RE section

(g) POH – 7 years ( NT-10y, Daido-7y, PTJ, UFSBI &SSBPAC-No POH )

(h) Replacement of Block Instruments is

a) Electrical Block B/I - 25 years

b) Electromechanical B/I - 20 years
