report .
PREFACE

This report is the comprises history of my summer internship experience at “ABZ law
Associates and corporate attorneys Islamabad. I had started my internship at this
firm on 24th June 2024.
In the following report I will illustrate my learning's about the legal litigation's of
Civil as well as Criminal Cases. Following report is based on the both Civil & Criminal
proceedings and the experience of the 9 weeks as an intern. The objective of the
internship program was to familiarize the student with the implementation of the
knowledge I earned in the campus.
The study on the pertinent subjects together with the cases observed at trial courts
during the internship is the major component of the report. With the same care, I
tried to represent my actions fairly and reproduce them in black and white.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

As during theoretical study of main subjects at campus, I was not aware much about
practical proceedings and applications of those subjects . That’s why internship
plays an eminent role to understand better about the academic courses. In summers
I worked as an intern for ABZ law Associate Islamabad, while there my main activity
was observation and discussion with the seniors & advocate under whom I worked. I
visited different courts in regard to different matters fixed in courts in daily routine
where I got an opportunity to observe the working.
I visited the following places:
∙ District and Session Court
∙ Civil Court
∙ Criminal Court
∙ FIA court
I gained valuable insight into how courts and lawyers really work. Not everything
happens in court but a lot of important legal work I witnessed in my firm. My seniors
spend a lot of time planning, giving advice, writing legal documents, brainstorming,
and keeping records to build a strong case. While working with my senior lawyer,
Mr. Emran feroz Awan, I learned about the details to determine how to prepare a
case. With his mentor ship, I witnessed how he counseled clients. This internship
helped me understand how the law is applied in real life. I saw how laws are
interpreted and used in court. It made the legal books I read come to life. In a
democratic country, laws are not just written down; they are also enforced in court.
Overall, it was a great experience to see how courts work, how our legal system
functions, and the important role lawyers play in delivering justice.
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction:
A legal internship is a great way to learn the skills needed to become a lawyer. It is
often a key step before starting a law career. As a legal intern, I get the chance to
work closely with experienced lawyers who taught me how to handle difficult cases,
think and write clearly, and draft legal documents like ,bails, applications, suits. This
experience also helped me to explore different areas of law and decide if i wants to
practice general law or specialize in a specific field.
I believe that being hardworking and focused, it's important to keep learning and
growing through variance experiences. For a law student, the first step in practical
life is learning how to compete with others in the field. An internship gives you
valuable knowledge and skills that are crucial for your professional growth.

CHAPTER 2: DETAILS OF INTERNSHIP

2.1 Joining of firm :

I got my internship letter signed by Dr. Imtiaz Ahmed Khan HOD (Head of
Department) of Law Department of University of Sahiwal.
I started my Internship at ABZ law Associates and corporate attorneys Islamabad on
24th June 2023. The name of my incredible teacher and respected mentor is Emran
Feroz Awan (Advocate of supreme court).

2.2 fields of Internship:

During my internship period, I focused on the general objective of internship. I
participated and worked actively in law related issues at the place of internship. I
observed the different legal issues and proceedings while presenting before the
court with my senior. I also participated in the law related researches at internship.
Research constitutes an important aspect of any internship whether it is a law firm
or a court internship.
I have been to all the criminal and civil courts at judicial complex Islamabad . During
the time of internship I listened all ears to all the advises and observed the footsteps
of my mentor Emran Feroz Awan. These lectures were not only about the legal
subjects but also cover the area of legal ethics.
I learn’ t following things in different cases and two Main branches of procedural and
penal law
(1) Civil Law:
The system of law concerned with private relations between
members of a community rather than criminal, military or religious affairs. It’s the
type of law or a branch of the law that actually regulates the non-criminal cases and
duties of persons whether they are the natural persons or legal persons, so simply
means clearly opposite to the criminal law or administrative law.
(2) Criminal Law:
The system of law which treats crime with their punishment.
It’s the area of law that concerns crimes and laws applied to those who commit
them. The substantive aspects of Criminal law are basically mentioned in Pakistan
Penal Code 1860 that was the main criminal code of Pakistan. And the procedural
aspects are briefly mentioned in the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898.

CHAPTER 5: PROFESSIONAL AND SOCIAL PROFICIENCY

5.1 Communication and Active Listening Skills:

Good communication has to be one of the most effective skills for lawyers. After all,
it is about being not just knowledgeable about the law but also orally
communicative with the clients, colleagues, and others. I listened attentively to the
words of a client which made me understand problems much better, hence
ascertaining better advice and solutions.

5.2 Analytical Skills:

Lawyers must be able to locate and understand information. As law student, I

learned how to find cases, laws, and articles in the process of the legal procedure.
Sifting through large amounts of information and using them correctly is the mark of
a good lawyer.

5.3 General Awareness:

A lawyer needs to be updated about everything that is happening in the world. I read
the news in newspapers, legal journals, and up-to-date political, cultural, and
international news which tends to make lawyer give their clients better advice and
stay relevant at work.

5.4 Time Management Skills:

A lawyer, within law, has to spend most of their time juggling multiple tasks-
meeting clients, going to court, and paperwork. So I being student of law learns to
manage time well by developing such skills in organizing , internship, and other
responsibilities assigned at campus and firm as internee.

5.5 Getting Practical Experience:

Internships give law students hands-on experience in helping them understand what
it is really like to work as a lawyer. Practical knowledge, such as how one can utilize
legal tools and handle real-word situations, has a very important role in becoming an
efficient lawyer. Internships helped me to apply what i have learned in class to real-
world work and eventually brings me preparation for a successful future. This way,
student internships also play a big role in helping law students develop the skills they
need to be appropriately equipped for the profession.
CHAPTER 6: OBSTURCTIONS ENCOUNTERED
It is because the professional environment at law firms is something so different
from what a law student encounters in school. Therefore, there are many challenges
that l encountered when I went out for internship. Hence, it can clearly be observed
that there is a great gulf between the academic training that law students receive
and the practice of law.

Most law schools are ineffective at preparing students to enter the legal scene with
the competence and experience required in particular tasks such as legal research,
writing, and transactional skills. It is thus during this internship period that students
acquire tacit knowledge in performing these tasks, which cannot be learned in class .

6.1 Lack of Practical Skills Needed in the Legal Field

I think many students expect that someone at the law firm will direct them on what
tasks to do. It is pretty quickly realized, however, that self-learning is the only
alternative since lawyers rarely have the time to train interns. Assignments like
writing or gathering evidence are given, but the students never know where to start
as they have no practical experience. This leads to the feeling of confusion and
anxiety as a novice because they are treated as one owing to lack of preparation.
In cases where research was requested by senior lawyers, as no instructions were
provided us at campus on how to conduct the work. Since legal research is
substantially different from academic research, students struggle without guidance.
Law students who have cooperative and supportive mentors deserve to be called
lucky.

6.2 A Law Intern's Life is Different from That of a Law Student

A drastic shift happens in my mind of when being law intern I face transition from
law school into internship, which was usually short-term opportunities for exposure
to the legal profession. The short period of internship made me under confident and
pressurized. This difference between theoretical knowledge acquired in law school
and practical application through immersion into the world of lawyers puts interns
way behind the curve of expectations.
Law students, for all their gross knowledge of tasks and responsibilities, get utterly
confused with real-world assignments.

6.3 Lack of networking experience

In general, as new interns i lack knowledge on how to comport professionally within

a legal environment. I was accustomed to a more casual environment, rather than a
professional academic environment. Therefore, the significance of networking is
unknown or underappreciated. Opportunities abound at such internships to build
valuable professional connections, not only with senior lawyers but also with fellow
interns who will become future lawyers.
6.4 Myth: Internships are a learning process
Rather than understanding this as a time to apply and demonstrate the knowledge
and skills I have obtained in law school, I believe that an internship is more of a
learning experience analogous to law school. Interns are not there to continue their
education but instead to contribute to the firm and assist lawyers. With all the
transitions needed, in this case a mental shift, the intern will be confused and
frustrated.

6.5 More Barriers Faced by Legal Interns

There are many other challenges that the interns face while on internship. Many a
times, an intern is given a task like researching or writing, but without any idea of
how to go about it. The intern may not even know if he should refer himself to
textbooks, case law, or search online. A lack of guidance will sometimes leave him
uncertain about how to even follow through on the assignments. In addition, some
interns either downplay or exaggerate their capabilities, and this sometimes results
in undesirable outcomes. The need to have a positive attitude, ethical behavior, and
a willingness to learn is highlighted since such qualities will determine the interest
the company develops towards the interns even when they leave.

CHAPTER 7 : Propositions

Following are the few propositions that I think would be beneficial for a law student.

Addition of research method subject.

There must be inclusion of subject regarding research method in initial semester
which might help students in term of problems they encounter in practical field
while searching for data concerning case laws ,reference e.t.c

Stipends for new enrolled lawyers.

There is no mechanism for providing financial assistance to newly enrolled lawyers in
Pakistan and not even for the interns there should be a sufficient remuneration in
the form of monthly stipends for them.

Early joining of courts.

I would recommend to students that they should try joining courts in spare time as
soon they start studying practical subjects.

Need of moot court society.

There should be formation of moot court society which might sharpen the skills of
students in litigation, argumentation, case preparation e.t.c

Internships thorough university.

The university should also write to the government offices of Advocate General or
Attorney General and the other offices where the law internships are provided to the
law students. This will not only help the students to get placement and also the good
name of the university will increase.
There are many Governments Internships that students can not avail due to non-
information and the time difference between the university and internship in the
concerned department.

CHAPTER 8: CONCLUSION

(Overall end-results of learning during internship)

It has been best experience of my life at learning Academic, professional and social
skills under the supervision of my mentor Mr. Emran Feroz Awan (advocate
supreme court) at ABZ LAW Associates and Corporate Attorneys,Islamabad . I have
learned a lot about practical application of law in the courts. This period of 9 weeks
of internship made me interactive and helpful in building up good contacts with
fellow seniors, for which good communication skill is required and try to gain
knowledge from them. Under the guidance my mentor I have witnessed meaningful
argumentation in criminal matters while presenting beside him in courts which
boost up my skills and confidence.

I got an opportunity to learn very basic and new things related to law. I think this
little time of internship is not enough for me as there are so many more things
which are required to be learned in future and obviously the list is never ending. But
the things that I learned would be useful for me in my future career.
