Guide: How to win and build strong Umamusume

Guide

I was surprised by how many posts I’ve seen from people struggling to win the URA
Finals. Then I realized, general purpose guides are either hard to find or tough to read
because of formatting issues. So here’s mine!

My experience on the JP server was short, I only played the first few months. So I'm not a
veteran player who played 4 years, everything here is from my memory, and reading the
japanese gamewith guides.

--- General tips to play the career mode optimally ---

• During the first year, your number 1 priority is building friendship with your
support cards. When choosing a training option, check the top right of the
screen, it shows which support cards are currently linked to that training. Focus
on the ones where your supports are gathered to raise their bond faster.

• Once a support card reaches 80% friendship (orange), they’ll start showing up
with a rainbow border, that means they can enter a "friendship training" with you,
which gives a huge boost to your stat gains. By the third year, if you’ve built up
everyone’s bond properly, you’ll start getting more stats in a single year than you
did in the first two combined.

• Resting is the least efficient action in the game, so you should avoid it as
much as possible. During events, always pick options that restore energy. For
example, there’s a recurring event where your Umamusume asks whether she
should train a bit more or take a break, always choose the option to rest (unless
your energy is already full). It saves you from having to waste a turn on resting
later.

• Each training type starts at level 1 and the director will level them up if you
choose the same training plan many times (I think it's 4 times to get 1 level up).
But during the training camp in July and August of the 2nd and 3rd year, all your
training options will automatically be boosted to level 5. That’s why it’s super
important to start summer with full energy, don’t go in tired. Since four trainings
in a row will drain your stamina, it’s a good idea to make one of those turns a WIT
training.

• At the start of every January, there’s a New Year event where you spend time with
your Umamusume. One of the choices (second choice in Year 2 and first choice
in Year 3) will restore your energy. So unlike the summer training camp, you
should enter the new year with mid/low energy. In addition to the new year event,
there's a lottery event at the end of January which will also restore your energy
and mood if you're lucky.

• Try to do as many G1 races as possible. Racing give you skill points but also fans.
When you reach a certain amount of fans, your unique skill will level up (60k
before Feb Year 3, 70k before April Year 3, 120k before Dec Year 3).

• A high fan count will also give you a better rating at the end of the career. The
global version doesn't have the race planning feature yet, so you should go on
gametora, filter the terrain, distance and select G1. For example for Turf + Mile, I
know I have nine potential G1 races to do. Find the right balance between
training for attribute points and racing for skill points.

• Write down or look up events (also on gametora using their event viewer tool) for
your favorite Umamusume and plan for them! For example, I know that Daiwa
Scarlet will have a mood down event so I keep one date with my Tazuna support
for that (Tazuna SSR support card give you 5 date events that restore energy and
mood without resting)

--- What attributes should I aim for when training? ---

This depends on two things: The distance of the race and the position of your
Umamusume. The longer the race, the more stamina you need. The farther behind you
are in position, the more power you need.

So you're telling me I can ignore power if I just choose to be a front runner?

In general yes. This is why it's much easier to train Umamusume who run in the front and
on short distance. Sakura Bakushin O can win the URA Final just by training speed. Gold
Ship would be more difficult to train because she run long distances and play on the
End Closer position.

You still haven't answered the question. What attributes should I aim for?

Enough stamina to finish the race > As much speed as you can > Enough power to catch
up > 400 Wis > Guts

Here are the numbers I recommend.

Race distance SPD STA POW GUT WIS

Short 1000+ 400 400-1000 300 400+

Mile 900+ 600 400-1000 300 400+

Medium 800+ 800 400-1000 300 400+

Race distance SPD STA POW GUT WIS

Long 800+ 1000 400-1000 300 400+

This is a rule of thumb for beginners. If you can't reach a certain amount of stamina, you
can compensate by giving your Umamusume some stamina restoration skills.

When your legacy Umamusume are strong enough and when you get better support
cards (Kitasan Black next month hype!), you will be able to get 1200 SPD on everyone. At
that point it would be interesting to also max the POW depending on your position, or
have more WIS for better chance to trigger skills and lessen the positioning RNG (you
know, the thing where your Umamusume is stuck behind 3 runners and get 12th place,
then you retry and she gets 1st).

--- What are legacy Umamusume? ---

You won the URA Finals with your favorite Umamusume! So now, what's next? What is
the game loop from there? Welcome to the legacy Umamusume training.

Before starting a career, you can choose two legacy Umamusume who will inherit their
sparks with the Umamusume you want to train (Yes, these are the official terms on
global according to the in-game guide)

There are four categories of sparks, but I will only talk about the 2 most important for
beginners: Attributes and proficiency sparks.

An attribute spark will give you bonus attribute at the beginning of your career. A 3 star
SPD spark gives 21 SPD. If your two legacy Umamusume have a 3 star SPD, and their
legacy Umamusume (we call them parents and grandparents on JP servers) also have a
3 star SPD, that's 21*6 = 126.

Imagine starting the career with +126 SPD.

But there's more. At the beginning of April in the 2nd and 3rd year, your Umamusume
will pray at the school statue, she has about 30% chance to inherit more stats from her
legacy Umamusume.

So in total, you can get about +200 SPD (or other attributes) for free by having legacy
Umamusume with good sparks. You also don't need to have 2 good parents since you
can borrow a parent from a friend.

Proficiency sparks will increase the rating of a track, distance or position of your
Umamusume. So for example, I want to use my Oguri Cap on Dirt track but she only has
a B rating. I can train her in career mode with a legacy Umamusume with Dirt Track
Spark to increase her rating to A, or potentially S.
Alright I understand legacy Umamusume now, but all my sparks are 1 or 2 stars.
How do I get 3 stars spark?

There are many factors involved and I do not have all of them in mind, but the two most
important are: You need at least 600 points in the attribute during career to get a 3 stars
spark. Of course getting more is better but 600 is the minimum.

In fact, there's a strategy called "All 600" which just mean that you are training all
attributes to 600 to have a chance to get a random 3 star spark from that career session.
But if you want to aim for a 3 star spark on a specific attribute, it's better to ignore other
attributes and focus on raising one above 1000 points.

The 2nd most important factor is Luck. Good luck!

I haven't mentioned the other types of sparks, there's more depth to this system so...
Have fun!

--- How to choose the skills to train? ---

• First, if your stamina is too low for the distance you want to race on, you need to
take stamina restoration skills.

• Gold skills are a lot better than regular skills. Try to take as many gold skills that
benefits you as possible. The Swinging Maestro gold skill from Super Creek
support card is so broken, you could run long distance races with mid-level
stamina.

• You should pay attention at the keywords Slightly, Moderately and Greatly when
reading skills descriptions. These keywords indicate how strong the skills
actually are, they have a big role in my decision to take them. I will never take
skills that say "slightly increase..." if they cost 180 points (no hint) unless I have
nothing else to take. We know Symboli Rudolf unique skill is currently one of the
best in global because it says "Greatly increase the velocity"

--- Random tips ---

• Friends are very helpful in this game. You should look up the friends ID channels
on the official or unofficial discord server, or the friend ID pinned in this
subreddit. Try to find players who shared MLB (Max Limit Break) support cards,
and/or players who shared their 3 stars spark Umamusume. This will instantly
improve your runs.

• Support cards of a certain attribute have more chances to be on the same

training plan as that attribute. So if I'm training Sakura Bakushin O, I want 4 or 5
SPD support cards to maximize the chances to get many rainbow support on the
SPD training plan.
• Don't underestimate low rarity Umamusume, they are all unique. Nice Nature for
example will be meta in PVP for at least a few months because she has many
debuff skills. We also don't have that many Dirt track Umamusume on release so
Haru Urara will be in every team for the Dirt track.

• Normal and SR Umamusume start at 1 and 2 stars respectively. They unlock their
unique skill at 3 stars so you should prioritize your resource on getting them to 3
stars if you want to play them.

End note

All of this come from my memory. If JP veteran players in comments find mistakes, I will
edit this post to fix them.
