thickness, use specimens 2-inch (51-mm) minimum thickness centered at T/2; and for plate
over 4 inches (102 mm) in nominal thickness, use specimens 2-inch (51-mm) minimum
thickness centered at T/4. For the S-L test direction, the test specimen shall be centered at
T/2. Required specimen orientation(s) shall be specified by purchaser.

3.3.6 Fatigue Resistance: When specified, 4 to 8-inch (102 to 203-mm) thick plate shall meet the
requirements of Table 4. Two fatigue specimens from each end of the parent plate shall be
sampled in the long transverse grain direction. These specimens are to be removed from the
T/2, W/2 location. Fatigue testing of the specimen shall be conducted in air at 70 °F + 5 (21 °C
+ 3) in accordance with ASTM E 466. They are to be tested at an R-ratio of 0.1, at a maximum
stress of 35.0 ksi (241 MPa) and shall meet the fatigue requirements shown in Table 4. When
agreed upon by the supplier and purchaser, alternate specimen location and test conditions,
and fatigue life requirements may be used.
TABLE 4 - Fatigue Life Requirements
Minimum cycles per test 90,000 cycles
Lot Log Average of 4 tests, min 120,000 cycles
Runout 200,000 cycles
[Link] Fatigue Specimen Design: Fatigue samples shall be machined to ASTM E 466, Figure 1.
The specimen shall have a 0.500 inch (12.70 mm) gage diameter, a 2.00-inch (50.80 mm)
gage section, and 3.0-inch (76.20 mm) fillet radius. The grip section may be varied to fit
different grip configurations, but should have no less than a 1.0-inch (25.4 mm) diameter.
[Link] Fatigue Specimen Finishing: Fatigue samples shall be longitudinally sanded to produce a
fine satin finish of 16 Ra or better. A medium grit emory paper shall be used to remove
transverse machining marks, followed by progressively finer emory papers. Light oil shall be
used as a lubricant. The use of an automated polishing system is highly recommended. An
equivalent procedure can be used provided it can be demonstrated that it gives equivalent
results to those obtained using the above method.
[Link].1 Samples shall be ultrasonically cleaned with a suitable solvent to remove all traces of
finishing/ sanding lubricant.
3.4 Quality:
Plate, as received by purchaser, shall be uniform in quality and condition, sound, and free from
foreign materials and from imperfections detrimental to usage of the plate.
3.4.1 When specified, each plate 0.500 inch to 8.000 inches (12.70 mm to 203.20 mm) in nominal
thickness shall be ultrasonically inspected in accordance with ASTM B 594 and shall meet the
requirements of [Link].
[Link] Plates shall meet the requirements for ultrasonic class A for plate 0.500 to 8.000 inches
(12.70 to 203.20 mm) in nominal thickness.
